TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a self-powered pacemaker that uses the variations of blood pressure inside the heart or a major artery to create a mechanical resonance in an electromagnetic or piezoelectric generator.
Abstract: A self-powered medical device, for example a pacemaker, uses the variations of blood pressure inside the heart or a major artery to create a mechanical resonance in an electromagnetic or piezoelectric generator. The resonance extends the time power is generated during the cardiac cycle. The pressure variations compress a bellows carrying the resonant generator. The inside of the bellows may be evacuated to a partial or full vacuum, and a spring restores the bellows to the desired equilibrium point, acting against the blood pressure. The current pulses are stored in a capacitor. Eliminating the battery allows dramatic miniaturization of the medical device to the point it can be implanted at the point of desired stimulation via a catheter.

TL;DR: A collapsible polymeric storage tube with flexible plastic disks as segregating spacers is described in this article, where the disks lock into the widest part of the bellows securing them in place.
Abstract: A bellows design collapsible polymeric storage tube. The device incorporates separate flexible plastic disks as segregating spacers that are dropped inside the device creating separate spaces for a plurality of items. The spacers lock into the widest part of the bellows securing them in place. The disks are printable/markable for promotional/informative media and labeling. In a first instance of the bellows receptacle, the collapsible bellows tube consists of two threaded ends and two threaded lids. The lids pop open and have their own separate space(s) that also uses a disk to create a separate segregated compartment. When a lid is empty the top of the lid collapses in upon itself thus saving space when the lid is empty and packed away, likewise the body of the tube collapses and expands as it is filled or emptied of the contents inside in order to save space when it is packed away. In a second instance of the present invention, the bellows receptacle uses a pair of segregating discs with each positioned approximate the top and bottom of the bellows receptacle forming closure for said receptacle. Any number of additional discs can be used to create segregated compartments within said bellow receptacle.

TL;DR: In this paper, a fuel-powered shape memory alloy actuator system (FPSMAAS) and its main components are discussed, where fuel (propane) is burned in a combustor and its heat is transferred to a working fluid medium, which in turn transfers the heat to the SMA element to drive its martensite-to-austenite phase transformation.
Abstract: The second part of this work discusses the fabrication and testing of a fuel-powered shape memory alloy actuator system (FPSMAAS) and its main components. Fuel (propane) is burned in a combustor and its heat is transferred to a working fluid medium, which in turn transfers the heat to the SMA element to drive its martensite-to-austenite phase transformation. For the austenite-to-martensite transformation, the heat is removed from the SMA element by a cooling fluid, from which the heat is then removed via a heat exchanger. The process of implementing the FPSMAAS consisted of three phases of increasing complexity, corresponding to three generations of the actuator system. For the final generation of the FPSMAAS, the SMA element was housed in a rectangular channel, featuring an innovative way of separating the cold from the hot fluid medium that alternately come in contact with the SMA element, in order to minimize the mixing between them. To meet our goal of miniaturization, a multi-channel combustor/heat exchanger and a micro-tube heat exchanger were developed and tested. The final actuator system was composed of pumps, solenoid valves, check valves, bellows, a micro-tube heat exchanger, a multi-channel combustor/heat exchanger and a control unit. The experimental tests of the final system resulted in 250 N force with 2.1 mm displacement and 1.0 Hz actuation frequency in closed-loop operation. The test results for the individual components as well as the final assembled actuator are compared with the results of the numerical analyses conducted in Part I and a good agreement has been demonstrated.

TL;DR: In this article, a scroll compressor is used for liquid cooling of a compressor with an inlet and an outlet to exhaust heated coolant to a heat exchanger, where the scrolls have a spiral upon a plate that ends in a tip.
Abstract: Modifications of a scroll compressor provide a bellows suitable for liquid cooling and a plunger actuated seal for the scroll tips of various equipment. A bellows spans the fixed and the orbiting scrolls and hermetically seals the scroll device. Using two bellows, the present invention allows for liquid cooling of a compressor with an inlet and an outlet to exhaust heated coolant to a heat exchanger. Then the scrolls have a spiral upon a plate that ends in a tip. A seal upon the tip that abuts the fixed scroll upon a biased plunger modifies existing scroll designs to maintain the seal in contact with the fixed scroll. The modifications also provide an improved coating that seals the fixed and orbiting scrolls to each other without the use of epoxy, disassembly, and cleaning.

TL;DR: In this article, a front steering mechanism for the ECH upper port of the ITER EH upper port was proposed. But the proposed mechanism is based on a pressure controlled helium filled bellows array working against a set of preloaded compressive springs.
Abstract: The purpose of the ITER electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) antennae located in the upper port launcher will be to stabilize the neoclassical tearing modes (NTM) by driving currents locally inside either the q = 3 / 2 or 2 island. The ITER reference design uses a front steering (FS) concept with the moveable mirror close to the plasma. The FS launcher is capable of steering eight 2 MW beams via two sets of steering mirrors [R. Chavan, M. Henderson, R. Bertizzolo, J.-D. Landis, F. Sanchez, H. Shidara, The ECH front steering launcher for the ITER upper port, this conference. [8] ]. In the adverse invessel operating conditions, reliable operation is required to guarantee the availability of the mirror steering mechanism during the 20-year lifetime of ITER. The dynamic performance and steering accuracy of the mirror system are essential for the localized beam power deposition. In order to increase the steering reliability and accuracy, traditional bearing and push–pull rods are avoided, which tend to introduce backlash or grip. The proposed frictionless and backlash free mechanism design uses elastically compliant structural components to guide and drive the rotating mirror. The actuator system is based on a pressure controlled helium filled bellows array working against a set of preloaded compressive springs. The radiation and temperature sensitive pressure control servovalves are located in the port duct behind the closure plate. Resistance to cyclic fatigue is the critical design requirement for compliant systems. In order to achieve the high reliability, four critical components are identified and described in detail. The bellows, the flexure pivots, the return springs and the spiral cooling tubes are the core elements of the mechanism allowing the controlled rotation of the mirror. Prototypes of the critical components are being tested. Corresponding analytical and cyclic fatigue numerical models of the compliant components are to be validated by fatigue bench tests. The detailed design and the principal tests of the critical components used in the FS mechanism will be presented.

Abstract: The occurrence of fluctuations in liquid chemical during the discharge and intake thereof in a device that employs a liquid chemical supply pump 10 that discharges liquid chemical taken in by means of a change in volume inside a pump chamber 16 that accompanies the displacement of a bellows type partition 14. The amount of fluctuation in the bellows type partition member 14 that accompanies the operation of a discharge side valve 32 will be detected by a displacement sensor 58 . The amount of fluctuation is a parameter that indicates a correlation with the abrupt flow of liquid chemical that accompanies the opening of the discharge side valve 32 . Thus, the amount of fluctuation will be reduced, and the pressure inside a pump chamber 16 prior to the opening of the discharge side valve 32 will be controlled.

TL;DR: In this article, the stiffness of rectangular, multilayer bellows have then been re-calculated with the finite element method (FEM) code ANSYS, and the maximum difference between the FEM and EJMA code resulted to an up to 250% in particular with movements along the longer side of the bellows.
Abstract: The WENDELSTEIN 7-X (W7-X) is a super-conducting helical advanced stellarator. W7-X is provided with 299 ports, which connect the plasma vessel with the outer vessel. All the ports are equipped with bellows, which, during bake-out and final adjustment, compensate the relative movements of the vessels. The lateral stiffness which was calculated with the established standard EJMA code [EJMA code, Standards of the expansion joint manufactures association, INC, 25 North Broadway, Tarrytown, NY 10591. [1] ] seemed to be relatively small. This appeared to be not correct in particular for non-circular bellows. The stiffness of rectangular, multilayer bellows have then been re-calculated with the finite element method (FEM) code ANSYS. The maximum difference between the FEM and EJMA code resulted to be up to 250% in particular with movements along the longer side of the bellows. In order to clarify the differences a test-campaign with the largest rectangular bellows was performed. The paper summarises the calculation, describes the test activities, the apparatus and reports the final results.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure a space inside a tube when the tube is crushed and deformed in a radial direction even if a protector is not mounted on the tube. SOLUTION: Ribs 12 (deformation suppressing parts) which are integrally and protrusively formed at the outside in the radial direction of the tube 10 are arranged at an outer periphery of the tube 10 having a bellows part 10A. Thus, a deformation amount can be suppressed when the tube 10 is crushed and deformed in the radial direction. Since thickness in a tangent direction of the ribs 12 with respect to the tube 10 in projection positions of the ribs 12 is set to be larger than twice the thickness of the tube 10, the space can be secured inside the tube 10 even if the tube 10 is crushed and deformed in the radial direction to thickness of the ribs 12.
