Abstract: We describe a flexible mirror constructed from plates of glass and lead zirconium titanate (PZT) piezoelectric ceramic glued together. It is activated by a series of electrodes on the reverse side. An equation of state is derived, giving the surface profile as a function of the electrode voltages, and the experimental behavior of the mirror is illustrated.

TL;DR: An ultrasonic transducer comprises a composite vibrator, which comprises a bimorph vibrator and a resin made additional resonator of a frustum of a cone provided at the central portion of the bimomorph vibrator as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: An ultrasonic transducer comprises a composite vibrator, which comprises a bimorph vibrator and a resin made additional resonator of a frustum of a cone provided at the central portion of the bimorph vibrator. The composite vibrator gives rise to the first resonance by a piston vibration mode at the lower frequency region and the second resonance by a bending vibration mode at the higher frequency region as compared with the central frequency. The composite vibrator is fixed to an insulating base through a ring shaped elastic member, whereby a resonance characteristic by virtue of a piston vibration mode is enhanced. Preferably a protrusion of the diameter slightly smaller than the nodal circle by virtue of a bending vibration mode is formed on the transducing surface of the resin made additional resonator of a frustum of a cone. The protrusion serves to reduce the quality factor of the second resonance by virtue of a bending vibration mode.

TL;DR: In this paper, a head support structure has an element 12, which can be deflected in accordance with the voltage applied, such as bimorph, which is composed of upper and lower layers 14 and 16 and is equipped with electrodes 18, 20, 22 and 24.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To simultaneously vary the azimus positional condition and displacement positional condition of a head by deflecting a head supporting structure by the voltage impressed. CONSTITUTION:A head support structure 10 has an element 12, which can be deflected in accordance with the voltage applied, such as bimorph. This bimorph 12 is composed of upper and lower layers 14 and 16 and is equipped with electrodes 18, 20, 22 and 24. When different voltages A and B are applied to those electrodes, the free end of the structure 10 is turned counter-clockwise or clockwise so that the head carried on the free end of the structure 10 has such an azimus as accords to the rotations of the free end of the structure. Moreover, if the electrodes 20 and 22 are grounded to the earth whereas the electrodes 18 and 24 are supplied with the voltages A and B, it is possible to deflect the head widthwise of the track.

TL;DR: In this article, discrete bimorph actuators were designed at Itek for a deformable mirror, which has a dilatation sensitivity of 6 microns at 1.5 KV.
Abstract: Discrete, bimorph actuators have been designed at Itek for a deformable mirror, which has a dilatation sensitivity of 6 microns at 1.5 KV. The bimorph actuators, mechanically designed to accommodate flexibility while bending, provide surface deformation, which depends upon the actuator length and faceplate stiffness. Mechanical resonances have been measured at frequencies well above bandwidths required for wavefront correction. Life test data indicates that less than λ/5 PP wavefront change occurred after exercising the bimorph device for 100 hours at 6 microns.© (1979) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. Abstract: An improved drive circuitry for controlling the deflection of a bimorph comprising a pair of electrically poled piezo-ceramic elements bonded to a common substrate is disclosed which applies deflection voltage in a manner whereby the polarity is always in the poling direction of each of the elements so that depolarization of the piezo-ceramic elements does not occur. The circuitry applies a common polarity D. C. biasing voltage to both of the piezo-ceramic elements of the bimorph and also applies oppositely phased A. C. deflection signals to the respective piezo-ceramic elements.

TL;DR: In this paper, a bimorph piezoelectric vibrator is supported to a stand by way of the insulated knife edges holders at the two fulcrames A, B symmetrical to the center in the lengthwise direction of an elastic diaphragm.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To achieve the reduction in size and weight of the actuator which performs high-density and high-speed locating by performing such thing as vibrating the elastic diaphragm supporting bimorph type piezoelectric vibrator symmetrically to the center at high frequencies and relatively large amplitudes. CONSTITUTION:A bimorph piezoelectric vibrator 14 is supported to a stand 18 by way of the insulated knife edges holders 16, 17 at the two fulcrames A, B symmetrical to the center in the lengthwise direction of an elastic diaphragm 12 and comprises affixing three sets of bimorph type piezoelectrics 13a having been bored to the diaphragm 12. Braking plates 15, 15 are provided to its both ends. This cnstitutin causes the vibrator 14 to be vibrated at high frequencies by bimorph type piezoelectric elements 13a... and at relatively large amplitudes by the composite displacements by the deflections centering at the fulcrums A, B and the deflections of the elements 13a... and at the same time to be vibrated stably by way of the braking plates 15. Hence, high-speed high-density track locating by the magnetic head 6 which is connected to the vibrator 14 by a gimbal spring 9, etc. and whose gap width is parallel with the vibrating direction is accomplished and the miniature and lightweight device of not requiring voice coils, etc. may be provided.

TL;DR: In this article, a dynamic type vibrator and an electrostrictive type bimorph vibrator were used to remove disturbing sound waves other than the target bearing by using two kinds of pressure gradient type transducers.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To remove disturbing sound waves other than the target bearing by using two kinds of pressure gradient type transducers. CONSTITUTION:A dynamic type vibrator 1 as a pressure gradient type transducer which electromagnetically performs electro-mechanical conversion and electrostrictive type bimorph vibrators 2a, 2b as pressure gradient type transducers which electrostatically perform electro-mechanical conversion are contained together with a medium of good sound wave transmittivity in a case of good sound wave transmittivity. Then the electric signal of the dynamic type vibrator 1 from output terminal 4a is removed of disturbing sound waves other than the target bearing as the electric signal being the difference of the two electrostrictive type bimorph vibrators 2a, 2b are outputted from output terminal 5a and at the same time the phase comparison for the purpose of bearing determination without phase shifter is made possible.

Abstract: The property that the bimorph deformation is generated along a quadratic curve is used to form a variable quadratic mirror surface so that an effective dynamic-focusing mirror system is realized. The effectiveness and the limitations of the method are examined numerically with some comparisons with the COAT system. A typical simple dynamic-focusing mirror system is constructed using this method. The results of numerical analysis and experiment show the usefulness of the method for dynamic focusing of laser beams.
