TL;DR: The on-line cataloging system is eas y to use, efficient, reliable, and cost beneficial.
Abstract: Development and implementation of an off-line catalog card production system and an on-lin e shared cataloging syst e m are described. In off-lin e production , average cost p e r card for 529 ,8 93 catalog cards in finished form and alphabetized for filing was 6.57 cents. An account is given of system design and equipment selection for the on-line system . File organization and pro gra ms are described, and the on-line cataloging system is discussed. The system is eas y to use , efficient, reliable, and cost beneficial.

Abstract: As a part of the NASA sponsored program on the application of communication satellites to educational development, a study was made of the utilization of telecommunications by academic and school libraries in the United states and the potential for future utilization by these institutions. The five basic functions performed by all libraries--acquisition, cataloging, storage, I retrieval, and circulation control--are identified, and an overview of library cooperation of a general nature not restricted to communication is presented. Applications of telecommunications are then described with respect to interlibrary information interchange and with respect to new uses. School and academic library budgets are discussed, together with the important role played by federal legislation and financial assistance. Current interlibrary communication utilization is described, noting that data communication is potentially an area of considerable value to libraries, but is currently used by only a few. The future of interlibrary communication utilization is projected; medical school libraries are seen as most likely to increase their utilization of data communication in the near future. cno PROGRAM ON APPLICATION OF COMMUNICATIONS SATELLITES TO EOUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY Memorandum No. 72/1 March, 1972 U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH. TL;DR: Details of the optical scanning conversion, with illustrations, show the r e lativ e ease of the techniqu e for simple upper case data files for Subject Authority File and Geographic Authority File files.
Abstract: A computer-based system to produce listings of topical sub;ect terms and geographically subdivided terms is described. The system files and th ei r associated listings are called th e Subject Authority File (SAF) and the Geographic Authority File (GAF). Conversion, operation, problems, and costs of the system are pres e nted . Details of the optical scanning conversion, with illustrations, show the r e lativ e ease of the techniqu e for simple upper case data files. Program and data characteristics are illustrat e d with record layouts and sample listings.

TL;DR: The CAIN system was designed to provide maximum computer services with the minimum of effort by users and utilizes the concept of controlled authority files to facilitate both information input and its retrieval.
Abstract: A description of the Cataloging and Indexing System (CAIN) which the National Agricultural Library has been using since January 1970 to build a broad data base of agricultural and associated sciences information. With a single keyboarding , bibliographic data is inputed, edited, manipulated, and merged into a permanent base which is used to produce many types of printed or print-ready end-products. Presently consisting of five subsystems, CAIN utilizes the concept of controlled authority files to facilitate both information input and its retrieval. The system was designed to provide maximum computer services with the minimum of effort by users.

TL;DR: The results indicate that a subject heading index showing classification numbers would be the preferred method of utilization, because it would be more accurate than the alternative considered, an arrangement by classification numbers which would be consulted to obtain subject headings.
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine the amount of correlation between National Library of Medicine classification numbers and MeSH headings in a body of cataloging which had already been done and then to find out which of two alternative methods of utilizing the correlation would be best. There was a correlation of 44.5% between classification numbers and subject headings in the data base studied, cataloging data covering 8,137 books. The results indicate that a subject heading index showing classification numbers would be the preferred method of utilization, because it would be more accurate than the alternative considered, an arrangement by classification numbers which would be consulted to obtain subject headings.
