TL;DR: Zhang et al. as discussed by the authors analyzed the spatial topological layout of traditional siheyuans by using the space syntax theory, and thus deduced the cultural connotation embedded in traditional siheuans; compare and analyze the spatial morphology and behavior patterns of traditional and modern houses.
Abstract: The United Nations and local governments have supported a four-point sustainable development framework, including environmental responsibility, economic viability, social equity, and cultural vitality. This study is based on the theoretical framework of sustainability to study the traditional Chinese siheyuan residence. Space syntax attempts to explain how spatial structures express social or cultural significance, such as the hierarchical relationship and privacy in it. The main purposes of this study are: (1) To analyze the spatial topological layout of traditional siheyuans by using the space syntax theory, and thus deduce the cultural connotation embedded in traditional siheyuans; (2) to compare and analyze the spatial morphology and behavior patterns of traditional and modern houses; (3) to explore how to integrate courtyard features into contemporary design and promote cultural sustainability. This study expounds the concept and application of syntactic analysis, and the relationship between the syntactic attributes of specific buildings in a particular area, and the culture and life of the local people within that area. As time goes by, the spatial form of houses has changed. However, in terms of spatial allocation index, the significant difference between traditional residences and modern residences lies in the integration and equivalence of all spaces in residences. We can learn from the cultural values of traditional siheyuans, meaning “people-oriented”, to rationally design modern residences with cultural connotations.

TL;DR: Wang et al. as mentioned in this paper studied consumers' attitudes and preferences on the Palace Museum's cultural and creative products and found that consumers attach great importance to factors such as "cultural connotation" and "unique creativity" when choosing the museum's products.
Abstract: In recent years, the development and design of the cultural and creative products of the Palace Museum in Beijing have become a hot topic in the product design field. Many critics have pointed out that cultural and creative products have failed to faithfully convey the implied meanings of the cultural stories of the Palace Museum. To effectively narrow the cognitive gap between designers and consumers, designers must urgently clarify the relationship between different design attributes and consumer preferences. The questionnaires were used to obtain data from 297 subjects. Through SPSS statistical software, the results were analyzed by descriptive statistics, explore factor analysis (EFA), independent sample t-test, and ANOVA to explore consumers’ attitudes and preferences on the Palace Museum’s cultural and creative products. The results showed that consumers attach great importance to factors such as “cultural connotation” and “unique creativity” when choosing the Palace Museum’s cultural and creative products. The consumer in different genders had significant differences in the design factors of the Palace Museum’s cultural and creative products. There were significant differences in the factors of “Forbidden City culture”, “cultural sustainability” and “traditional culture” to different educational backgrounds. There were significant differences in the factor of “Forbidden City culture” to different ages. There were significant differences in the factors of “cultural traits” and “cultural identity” between the with and without a design background groups. The results of this study will identify the key factors for the design of the Palace’s Museum cultural and creative products and provide references for designers.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors take the proposition that language will always be the product of a specific history and culture as a starting point, and they proceed to a more meaningful examination: through the creation, evolution and definition of their form and meaning, words have come to encompass specific social phenomena.
Abstract: Nineteenth century legal historians believed that just as language and customs were the product of a nation’s past history and cultural mentality, so were their laws. This proposition is correct in the following sense: as essential elements of a culture, law and language both in their own way reflect the distinguishing features of the overall culture. Anytime one language is translated into another language, one often encounters the problem of the translation failing to accurately express the original meaning. This problem arises from neither the level of the translator’s proficiency in grasping and using a language nor the inherent expressiveness of a language, but rather it is simply that it is impossible to find an appropriate word that corresponds to the meaning of the other word. These difficulties in translation are a reflection of historical and cultural differences. Perhaps the subtle lin- guistic barriers created by these differences can never be eliminated. Taking the proposition that language will always be the product of a specific history and culture as a starting point, we can proceed to a more meaningful examination: through the creation, evolution and definition of their form and meaning, words have come to encompass specific social phenomena. Furthermore, a new understanding of these words is provided through their connotation as reflected in the historical and cultural characteristics expressed in these social phenomena. Through this process, a few words with which we are familiar will take on a fresh new significance, and our knowledge of interrelated social phenomena can also be further deepened. This process is expanded upon below, and a word with which everyone is very familiar (at least people believe so) has been taken as the starting point for this process: “law.”

Abstract: Donald Trump’s speeches and messages are characterized by terms that are commonly referred to as “thick” or “emotive,” meaning that they are characterized by a tendency to be used to generate emotive reactions. This paper investigates how emotive meaning is related to emotions, and how it is generated or manipulated. Emotive meaning is analyzed as an evaluative conclusion that results from inferences triggered by the use of a term, which can be represented and assessed using argumentation schemes. The evaluative inferences are regarded as part of the connotation of emotive words, which can be modified and stabilized by means of recontextualizations. The manipulative risks underlying the misuse and the redefinition of emotive words are accounted for in terms of presuppositions and implicit modifications of the interlocutors’ commitments.

TL;DR: In this paper, a dictionary of symbols is presented to organize a framework of the aspects, uses and meanings that symbols have, and have had, over the years, in order to understand traditional poetry in its own terms.
Abstract: Symbols occurring in Spanish popular poetry are found in all cultures, traditions and historical ages. Their meaning depend on their own contexts in order to be decodified. Sometimes, they may even present erotic connotation. Thus, a dictionary of symbols pave the way to organize a framework of the aspects, uses and meanings that symbols have, and have had, over the years. In other words, a dictionary its an important contribution to understand traditional poetry in its own terms.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors explore the relationships between people and place, and offer a deeper insight on some of the overlooked qualities that actually make up the character or essence of those urban areas.
Abstract: On a global scale, the complex interrelationships between cultural identity and heritage have for long been a topic of interest to many urban scholars. Tracing back ‘the modern concept of heritage’, which certainly emerged from a European context, one could track the expansion of its notions within an over three-century time span. There has been more recently a growing trend toward alternative perceptions of cultural heritage with a fresh interest in the nonmaterial aspects of the matter. Such shift in the general view started to partly turn the focus away from the material past, and with that triggered off some debates around what matters more. This is while, very often, newer definitions of heritage are either undertheorized or less dived into by academics and largely neglected by practitioners. That is partly why heritage studies have newly found itself at a turning point where many critical arguments thus arisen. This research, therefore, touches upon the challenges that reconceptualization of cultural heritage entails in terms of urban management. On the theoretical level, inspired by the concept of intangible cultural heritage, this research works on ‘meanings’ of urban heritage while looking into historical neighborhoods of the case of Tehran. By exploring the relationships between people and place, the research offers a deeper insight on some of the overlooked qualities that actually make up the character or essence of those urban areas. They could be best described as qualities with some sort of nonmaterial nature or nontangible connotation, no matter whether they stem from tangible things or intangible things. The primary aim is to build up to a more flexible and less predetermined view on what should and what should not be considered as worthwhile when it comes to heritages of urban areas for their people and communities. On the empirical level, in reference to the typically differing motives for heritage conservation and urban development, this research brings attention to the major changes which resulted from intervention practices in the case of Tehran’s historical center. While observing Iran’s contemporary political economy, the research argues why and how dynamics of city planning in Tehran rather knowingly overlooked historical neighborhoods until very recently, if not still. So, the idea is to, from one angle, find out the mindset behind some of the actual practices carried out by relevant administration and operation agencies which have been planned and designed by professionals; and, from the other angle, indicate why the locals’ viewpoints on the places they hold dear or even not are increasingly part of urban heritage studies. In addition to on field empirical study and desk research on secondary data resources, this research makes use of semi structured interviews conducted with a number of experts and national/local authorities involved in Iran/Tehran’s heritage management as well as informal conversations with individuals and groups of ordinary people.

TL;DR: This work proposes a methodology to capture the meaning of image-caption pairs on the basis of large amounts of machine-readable knowledge that has previously been shown to be highly effective for text understanding, and identifies the connotation of objects beyond their denotation.
Abstract: We investigate the problem of understanding the message (gist) conveyed by images and their captions as found, for instance, on websites or news articles. To this end, we propose a methodology to capture the meaning of image-caption pairs on the basis of large amounts of machine-readable knowledge that has previously been shown to be highly effective for text understanding. Our method identifies the connotation of objects beyond their denotation: where most approaches to image understanding focus on the denotation of objects, i.e., their literal meaning, our work addresses the identification of connotations, i.e., iconic meanings of objects, to understand the message of images. We view image understanding as the task of representing an image-caption pair on the basis of a wide-coverage vocabulary of concepts such as the one provided by Wikipedia, and cast gist detection as a concept-ranking problem with image-caption pairs as queries. To enable a thorough investigation of the problem of gist understanding, we produce a gold standard of over 300 image-caption pairs and over 8,000 gist annotations covering a wide variety of topics at different levels of abstraction. We use this dataset to experimentally benchmark the contribution of signals from heterogeneous sources, namely image and text. The best result with a Mean Average Precision (MAP) of 0.69 indicate that by combining both dimensions we are able to better understand the meaning of our image-caption pairs than when using language or vision information alone. We test the robustness of our gist detection approach when receiving automatically generated input, i.e., using automatically generated image tags or generated captions, and prove the feasibility of an end-to-end automated process.

TL;DR: The authors presented the first gold standard for historical word emotions, which was created by scholars with proficiency in the respective language stages and covers both English and German, and measured their effectiveness in diachronic settings, and showed that hand-selecting small sets of seed words with supposedly stable emotional meaning is actually harm rather than helpful.
Abstract: To understand historical texts, we must be aware that language—including the emotional connotation attached to words—changes over time. In this paper, we aim at estimating the emotion which is associated with a given word in former language stages of English and German. Emotion is represented following the popular Valence-Arousal-Dominance (VAD) annotation scheme. While being more expressive than polarity alone, existing word emotion induction methods are typically not suited for addressing it. To overcome this limitation, we present adaptations of two popular algorithms to VAD. To measure their effectiveness in diachronic settings, we present the first gold standard for historical word emotions, which was created by scholars with proficiency in the respective language stages and covers both English and German. In contrast to claims in previous work, our findings indicate that hand-selecting small sets of seed words with supposedly stable emotional meaning is actually harm- rather than helpful.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors take rural reconstruction communities in earthquake-stricken areas of Chengdu as the research object and adopt sociological research methods such as field survey, observation and interview to try to understand the transformation of rural social relations network under the influence of earthquake and its impact on rural space.
Abstract: The occurrence of Wenchuan earthquake in 2008 has led to severe damage to the rural areas of Chengdu city, such as the rupture of the social network, the stagnation of economic production and the rupture of living space. The post-disaster reconstruction has become a sustainable issue. As an important link to maintain the order of rural social development, social network should be an important content of post-disaster reconstruction. Therefore, this paper takes rural reconstruction communities in earthquake-stricken areas of Chengdu as the research object and adopts sociological research methods such as field survey, observation and interview to try to understand the transformation of rural social relations network under the influence of earthquake and its impact on rural space. It has found that rural societies under the earthquake generally experienced three phases: the break of stable social relations, the transition of temporary non-normal state, and the reorganization of social networks. The connotation of phased rural social relations also changed accordingly: turn to a new division of labor on the social orientation, turn to a capital flow and redistribution in new production mode on the capital orientation, and turn to relative decentralization after concentration on the spatial dimension. Along with such changes, rural areas have emerged some social issues such as the alienation of competition in the new industry division, the low social connection, the significant redistribution of capital, and the lack of public space. Based on a comprehensive review of these issues, this paper proposes the corresponding response mechanism. First of all, a reasonable division of labor should be established within the villages to realize diversified commodity supply. Secondly, the villages should adjust the industrial type to promote the equitable participation of capital allocation groups. Finally, external public spaces should be added to strengthen the field of social interaction within the communities. Keywords—Social relations, social support networks, industrial division, capital allocation, public space.

TL;DR: In the context of the Bapedi people of Limpopo Province in South Africa, this paper explored and documented the link between belief and ritual in Bapedia belief systems.
Abstract: There is no consensus among scholars of myth as to how the central concept of their field should be defined. What is a ‘myth’ and how does it differ from a ‘belief’? Moreover, scholars have argued for a homological relationship between myth and ritual. Semantically, the word ‘myth’ has a connotation of disbelief in ‘superstition’, and the word ‘belief’ should be substituted when talking about religious practices. Likewise, the word ‘ritual’ may be substituted with ‘ceremonial’, which has connotations that are more positive. Earlier publications that associate ancestral veneration with the words ‘myth’ or ‘superstition’ display a judgemental view of the beliefs of other cultures. In this article, the author attempts, via recourse to the use of the word ‘myth’, to describe and interpret traditional and cultural belief systems among the Bapedi people of Limpopo Province in South Africa. It is argued that myth should not be reduced to ritual nor ritual to myth. Belief and ritual, in Bapedi religion and belief systems, complete and complement each other, thus allowing the harmonious unison of meta and paralinguistic elements in religiocultural discourse. The focus of this study is to explore and document these links within the context of the Bapedi culture.

TL;DR: The worth and application of the philosophy of Emotion Retrospection in design process of museum cultural creative products, so as to supplement the topics of researches on how to design museumcultural creative products and to offer some inspiration of designing.
Abstract: As the Internet evolves from the times of network to the times of internationalization, a latest cultural phenomenon and economic phenomenon, “experience-based cultural assumption”, keeps gaining attention society-wide, with a wide variety of cultural creative products having popped up. Museum is a palace of humanity and spiritual civilization, maintaining encyclopaedical culture resources, and thus, museum may have innate advantages in developing and designing cultural creative products with the philosophy of emotion retrospection. Besides, museum is of great publicity, so it should possess multiple functions, such as to serve and guide the public, to release cultural creativity, to satisfy contemporary individual demands and so on. In the past few years, driven by policy, technology and capital, the development of museum cultural creative products has gradually accelerated, but the design of many products has over focused on a mono-directional aesthetic perspective, which leads to that the functional worth of the products have not yet completely fulfilled. Therefore, a urgently problem currently to be worked out is how to design a popular product with both epochal features and function of carrying forward Chinese traditional culture and regional civilization. The perspective of “Emotion Retrospection” is innovationally introduced in this essay. In terms of the cultural emotion connotation of museum cultural creative products, this essay creatively discusses the worth and application of the philosophy of Emotion Retrospection in design process of museum cultural creative products, so as to supplement the topics of researches on how to design museum cultural creative products and to offer some inspiration of designing.

TL;DR: In this paper, a theoretical background in literary analysis regarding denotation and connotation and describes how such analyses offer fruitful avenues for research in health humanities is presented. But, the analysis is limited to a subset of words: cancer, natural, narcotic, botanical, palliative, consent, and many others.
Abstract: Research using denotation and connotation explores how words convey meaning to various audiences and illuminates phenomena such as patient resistance, structural barriers to healthcare, and the evolution of specific medical practices. Words such as cancer, natural, narcotic, botanical, palliative, consent, and many others, are ripe for such analysis because each has many denotations (definitions) and connotations (cultural associations). For example, the word digitalis may connote a pretty foxglove flower, a heart drug, or a poison. What might this mean for patients prescribed digitalis? For those who see foxglove as a safer alternative? Denotation and connotation explore how concepts in healthcare emerge, propagate, evolve, or decline within specific communities, at particular historical moments, or across eras and cultures. This chapter offers a theoretical background in literary analysis regarding denotation and connotation and describes how such analyses offer fruitful avenues for research in health humanities.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explore the relations between signifier and signified, denotation and connotation, cultural codes and modes of interpretation, and explore these within the context of the news photograph.
Abstract: Stuart hall begins his analysis of news photographs with the line ‘In the modern newspaper, the text is an essential element, the photograph an optional one’. It might be suggested that this position has changed. Building on classic semiotic theory of Roland Barthes and others, Hall maps out the relations between signifier and signified, denotation and connotation, cultural codes and modes of interpretation, and explores these within the context of the news photograph. Of particular significance are the formal and ideological levels on which news images operate to produce first and second order meanings. In the modern newspaper, the text is an essential element, the photograph an optional one. Yet photographs, when they appear, add new dimensions of meaning to a text. As Roland Barthes has observed, ‘pictures are more imperative than writing, they impose meaning at one stroke, without analysing or diluting it’.

It shall be realized that typology photography is just wraps the connection between itself and the essence of photography in formal language and hide its expression under formal language. Therefore, the connotation of photography itself must be used as a clue to uncover these presentative tools. Typology photography must be established under the background of the essence of photography to acquire its meaning.
