Abstract: Science as Practice and Culture explores one of the newest and most controversial developments within the rapidly changing field of science studies: the move toward studying scientific practice--the work of doing science--and the associated move toward studying scientific culture, understood as the field of resources that practice operates in and on. Andrew Pickering has invited leading historians, philosophers, sociologists, and anthropologists of science to prepare original essays for this volume. The essays range over the physical and biological sciences and mathematics, and are divided into two parts. In part I, the contributors map out a coherent set of perspectives on scientific practice and culture, and relate their analyses to central topics in the philosophy of science such as realism, relativism, and incommensurability. The essays in part II seek to delineate the study of science as practice in arguments across its borders with the sociology of scientific knowledge, social epistemology, and reflexive ethnography.

TL;DR: In this paper, the substance of competitiveness is derived from a class of determinants used in theoretical and empirical studies, and a flexible rather than a generalizing concept of competitiveness should be used, because the explanatory power increases with the former.
Abstract: The purpose of the paper Is to work out the substance of the term "competitiveness" from a broad overview of concepts used. For most of the period theory in the field has comprised three quite separate strands, f.e. trade theory, price theory and Industrial organization. Starting with the theoretical background the substance of "competitiveness" is derived from a classfflcatlon of determinants used in theoretical and empirical studies. The main indicators are defined and explained. We conclude that a flexible rather than a generalizing concept of competitiveness should be used, because the explanatory power increases with the former. The research problem in question defines the subset of indicators to be chosen. Consequently, the subset varies from case to case and with it the concept of competitiveness.

In discussing these chapters I have chosen to elaborate on three themes that are common to several of them. In the process, I will raise more questions than answers, because I see these themes as ones that the field is just beginning to address.

Abstract: Folklorists tend to study cultures and communities by paying close attention to stylized genres or traditional expressive behaviors In recent decades as the emphasis in the field of folklore has shifted from studies that are text centered to studies that are more context oriented, a number of folklorists have turned their attention to the interrelations of tradition and environment Of all genres attached to places, narratives and place names traditionally have drawn the most attention from folklorists In particular, folklorists have long sensed a deep connection between legendry and topography (Dorson, 1971) and have undertaken studies of migratory legends, and the role of physical settings, in nurturing narrative traditions (Honko, 1981; Moss, 1983) Gradually the collection and study of folklore as static migratory items has developed into the investigation of the reciprocity between traditional genres and their settings (Allen, 1990) Folklore, which “vivifies place” is seen to be inspired and reinforced by distinctive physical features in the local setting (Moss, 1983) Lauri Honko notes that when “milieu dominants” as he calls such features, are constituted as places, their names become a powerful means of perpetuating local tradition (Cochrane, 1987; Honko, 1981) Other scholars have explored ways in which communities use traditional materials both to enhance their sense of belonging within a locale or region and to distinguish themselves from outsiders (Jones, 1976)
