TL;DR: The degree and basis of social power of uniformed figures was investigated in two field experiments as mentioned in this paper, where subjects were asked to pick up a paper bag or to give a dime to a stranger, or to move away from a bus stop.
Abstract: The degree and basis of social power of uniformed figures was investigated in two field experiments. In the first experiment, subjects were stopped in the street by an experimenter dressed in one of three ways: a civilian, a milkman, or a guard. They were asked to pick up a paper bag, or to give a dime to a stranger, or to move away from a bus stop. The results indicated that the subjects complied more with the guard than with the civilian or milkman. In the second field experiment, designed to examine the basis of the guard's power, subjects were asked to give a dime to a stranger under conditions of either surveillance or nonsurveillance. The guard's power was not affected by the surveillance manipulation. A logical analysis of social power indicated that the guard's power was most likely based on legitimacy. Two questionnaire studies indicated, however, that college students did not perceive the guard as having either more. power or more legitimacy than the milkman or civilian. The nature and importance of understanding legitimacy was discussed.

Abstract: A surgical knife assembly in which a blade is provided with a guard for limiting the depth of cut. The guard is formed of a resilient material such as plastic, and frictionally grips the blade, so that the guard is adjustable on the blade by the application of a predetermined amount of axial force, with the force required for adjustment being considerably greater than the force that is applied thereto during a cutting procedure. An adjustment tool is also provided, the tool and the blade having cooperative engaging portions to permit accurate adjustment of the position of the guard on the blade between incisions during a surgical procedure.

TL;DR: In this article, a safety guard structure including a guard member adapted to be interposed between a mechanism such as a punch press and the operator thereof to protect the operator from injury is described.
Abstract: A safety guard structure including a guard member adapted to be interposed between a mechanism such as a punch press and the operator thereof to protect the operator from injury. In one form of the invention the guiding frame for guiding the guard member between its upper and lower positions is swingably connected to the mechanism to be guarded to permit the entire guiding frame to be swung upwardly so as to present no interference when it is desired to modify the mechanism or to change the dies thereof. In another form of the invention the guide structure for the guard member is entirely positioned above the area to be protected so as to present no interference when it is necessary for operators to work around the machine. An interlocking device is provided to prevent operation of the mechanism except when the guard member and its guide structure are in proper operating position.

TL;DR: In this paper, a lower saw guard assembly for a radial arm power saw is presented, which consists of a pair of pivotable guard plates substantially in the shape of quadrants which overlap at the front of the saw blade to provide a substantially semi-circular front saw guard and two pivotable rear guard links which overlap adjacent to the back of a saw blade.
Abstract: A lower saw guard assembly for a radial arm power saw is provided. The guard assembly includes a pair of pivotable guard plates substantially in the shape of quadrants which overlap at the front of the saw blade to provide a substantially semi-circular front saw guard and a pair of pivotable guard links which overlap adjacent to the back of the saw blade to provide a substantially semi-circular rear guard for the blade. The front guard plates and rear guard links are simultaneously pivotable upon engagement with work material to expose necessary areas of the periphery of the saw blade to cut the work material. The front guard plates and rear guard links are designed to achieve desired safety and eliminate the possibility of jamming of the lower guard assembly against the work material to minimize the possibility of interference with movement of the saw.

TL;DR: In this article, a detection system based on separately thresholding the outputs of both channels and their ratio is proposed. But the detection system is not considered in this paper, and the main and guard threshold levels are generated as a function of the background noise levels in the two channels.
Abstract: In an airborne radar system of the type including a main high gain narrow beamwidth antenna and a guard low gain wide beamwidth antenna with main and guard receiver channels, a detection system based on separately thresholding the outputs of both channels and their ratio. Mainlobe target detection is assumed to occur only when either the output of the main channel exceeds a main threshold level and the output of the guard channel does not exceed a guard threshold level or when the outputs of the two channels exceed their respective thresholds and the ratio (or the difference) of the outputs from the two channels exceed a ratio threshold level. The main and guard threshold levels are generated as a function of the background noise levels in the two channels.
