Abstract: It has been a long sought goal to determine the critical flashover voltages of long air gaps by mathematical calculations instead of experiments. In this paper, a predictive model is proposed for 50% discharge voltage (U50) prediction of long air gaps subjected to switching impulses. This model is developed on the basis of the physical thought that air breakdown can be viewed as out-of-limit of the capacitive energy stored in the electric field. Two groups of features are defined to characterize the energy storage status of an air gap, from the perspective of electric field distribution and impulse voltage waveform, respectively representing the space distribution and time accumulation of the energy. The predictive model is established by support vector machine (SVM), and the input data are the energy storage features. Giving an estimated applied voltage range, the predicted result of the critical flashover voltage is searched by the golden section method. Trained by 6 known experimental data, this model is used to predict the U50 of rod-plane, rod-rod and rod-conductor long air gaps subjected to negative switching impulse voltages. The mean absolute percentage errors of 5 groups of test samples are respectively 6.0%, 5.8%, 6.3%, 3.2% and 1.7%, which are in an acceptable range in the view of engineering applications. The proposed method might be useful to predict the U50 of long air gaps with various geometries and under different voltage waveshapes, therefore reducing the required test work for insulation design of high voltage equipments.

Abstract: The field impulse voltage test plays the most important role to ensure the safe of the power transformer. It is hard to carry out the standard impulse voltage test for the power equipment because the generator is very huge. The oscillating impulse voltage waveform has high efficiency and be recommended by IEC 60060-3 as the field test waveform. Transformer oil is the main insulation part of power transformer insulation system. The insulation characteristics of transformer oil under different type impulse waveform have great influence to the design, operation and test amplitude for the power transformer. This paper focuses on the breakdown characteristics of transformer oil in a uniform field under oscillating impulse voltage (OIV). Three type oscillating impulse voltage waveforms with oscillating frequency of 14, 117 and 373 kHz were adopted as the test waveforms. The standard lightning impulse (SLI) voltage was also adopted as the reference waveform. The experiment results show the breakdown waveforms have large oscillation under OIV but little oscillation under SLI for the influence of circuit inductor. The minimum breakdown voltage increase with the increase of oscillating frequency and the 117 kHz impulse waveform has the similar breakdown voltage with SLI waveform. The voltage-time distributions were obtained through lab test and the results shown that the OIV have the longer time lag than SLI for the influence of the oscillation of waveform. The experimental results were explained through streamer mechanism. The study provides the foundation for the field impulse test using oscillating impulse waveform.

Abstract: The field impulse voltage withstand test plays one of the most important roles to ensure the safety of the gas insulated equipments. It is hard to carry out the standard impulse voltage test for the equipments because the generator is very large and difficult to transport. The oscillating impulse voltage waveform has high efficiency and has been recommended by the IEC 60060-3 as the field test waveform. SF6 gas is the insulation medium of gas insulated equipments. Its insulation characteristics under different types of impulse waveforms have great influence to the design, operation and test amplitude. This paper focuses on the breakdown characteristics of SF6 gas in a quasi-uniform field under oscillating impulse voltages (OIV). Four types of oscillating impulse lightning voltage waveforms with oscillating frequency of 100, 200, 300 and 400 kHz were adopted as the test waveforms. The standard lightning impulse (SLI) voltage was also adopted as the reference waveform. A calculation model is established to explain the results. The experiment and calculation results show that the breakdown waveforms in time domain drop quickly and then have a recovery with low amplitude to zero under OIV for the influence of circuit inductor. 50% probability breakdown voltages (BDVs0%) under OIV are higher than that under SLI. The minimum breakdown voltage and BDVs0% both increase with oscillating frequency. The voltage-time distributions show that breakdowns under OIV occur in the vicinity of each wave peak of the applied voltage. OIV have a longer time lag than SLI due to the oscillation of the waveforms.

Abstract: This paper conducts an experimental investigation about the breakdown in transformer oil under the action of impulse voltages with different waveform parameters for the insulation of the transformer in field may be subjected to the lightning and switching overvoltage. In the paper, an impulse voltage generator is built based on the solid state switch and it can produce different kinds of impulse voltage. Five different impulse voltage waveforms are used: 1.4/50µs, 11/210µs, 60/700µs, 130/1700µs and 250/2600µs. Then the breakdown tests are carried out under these impulse voltages. Specifically, a needle plate electrodes immersed in the bulk of the transformer oil is used to form a nonuniform electric field gap. The different radii of curvature and different gap distances of the needle plate electrodes are also taken into consideration in order to determine the properties of breakdown electric field strength. The impulse voltage is increased step by step with a step increment of 2 kV for positive polarity (1 shot/step) until the oil gap breakdown takes place. The description of discharge and breakdown in the oil gap is obtained by the measurement of impulse voltage, transient currents and the emitted light. Meanwhile, the breakdown voltage and breakdown time for impulse voltages with different waveform parameters are obtained. And the average velocity of streamer propagation is deduced. The results show that the breakdown voltage is closely related to the front time of the impulse voltage, the gap distance and the radii of curvature of the needle electrode. The propagation time of the streamer increases with the increase of the impulse front time, also the breakdown time delay has the same characteristic. The factors that influence the gap breakdown voltage are finally analyzed and discussed.

Abstract: Through the development of detection and measurement systems for lightning strokes, the possibility arose for the identification of the characteristic parameters of lightning current and the resulting voltage waveforms that stress the power system insulating equipment. The real lightning voltages that stress the insulation may vary over a wide type of waveforms and may also differ significantly from the standard 1.2/50 $$\upmu \hbox {s}$$ lightning impulse voltage. Therefore, the prediction of volt–time characteristics of any insulating material for such non-standard voltages is required for a proper insulation design. In this regard, this paper aims at evaluating the dielectric behaviour of medium voltage insulators subjected to voltage impulses with standard and non-standard waveforms, by applying the disruptive effect method. The non-standard lightning overvoltage waveforms considered in this study were based on lightning overvoltages produced by real return stroke current waveforms observed on conveyed measurement data. The investigation involves a comparison between measured and predicted voltage-time characteristics of insulators, considering single-peaked and double-peaked non-standard impulsive voltage waveforms as well as the standard lightning impulse voltage. Three different types of insulating arrangement involving 15- and 25-kV pin-type porcelain insulators were investigated. The estimation of the parameters required for this prediction method was performed using a simulation language available at ATP/ATPDraw software called MODELS.

Abstract: Under high impulse currents, an earthing system exhibits different impulse characteristics depending on the shape and/or design configuration of the earthing system. These characteristics have been seen to be different with respect to its steady-state as highlighted in many studies. Furthermore, in order to ascertain that a correct design of an electrical system is achieved, it is important to evaluate the impulse characteristics of the earthing system under high impulse conditions. So far little emphasis has been given in previous publications to investigate the characteristics of earthing systems under high impulse conditions by field measurements. For this reason, a rather efficient and reliable technique to solve this problem is by conducting a practical analysis (field experiment). This paper investigates the characteristics of a single rod electrode under high impulse conditions by field measurements under different polarities. The single rod is selected in this paper for its simple configuration and installation. It was observed in this study that the resistance of the single rod earthing system was seen to reduce with increasing current magnitudes for both polarities and negative polarity has higher impulse resistance than that of positive polarity.

Abstract: High electric field pulse sterilization is one of nonheat sterilization, and is a new sterilization technique for liquid food. In this sterilization method, we apply high voltage pulses to liquid food. The general impulse generator is the Marx circuit. The impulse generator with the spark gap switch has two disadvantages; the charge time is long and the rise rate of applied voltage is slow. In this study, we report the sterilization of Escherichia coll by Marx Circuit with Switches Using Bipolar Junction Transistors (BJT). The experimental sample is 1.0 ×10−3 mol/L NaCl aqueous solution containing E. coli. We applied pulse voltage to the sample by the 10 stages Marx circuit with switches using BJT 2SC2824. The pulse interval is 1 seconds. The survival number of E. coli was counted by the colony counting method. As the results, the survival number of E. coli was decreased with the increase of the number of pulses. We estimated the survival number of E. coli by sterilization mechanism for high electric field pulse. The experimental results of survival number disagreed with the calculated values.

Abstract: High voltage impulse generators are intended to last for long periods of time. Upon reaching the end of their technical lifetime, decisions concerning decommissioning, replacement, refurbishment or upgrading are needed. A new generator is a considerable investment. Significant reductions in material and labor costs can be made by repurposing still functional elements of the existing generator and redesigning the circuit for higher efficiency requiring fewer components. Abstract: In order to find out the detection effectiveness of GIS insulation defects when suffering different overvoltages, a coaxial bus line of 220kV with a needle attached to it was established as an experimental sample to simulate the practical condition that there existed a metallic particle on the bus line of real GIS. Research was carried on with the help of 1MV steep-fronted impulse generator. By changing the wave front resistance of Marx generator, different kinds of double exponential impulse voltages could be produced. Influence of wave front time (t f ) on 50% discharge voltage (U 50 ) and voltage-time (v-t) characteristic of GIS was studied in this article. Results indicate that with t f increasing, U 50 presents an increasing tendency overall; with pressure (P) increasing, when t f is short, U50 hardly changes with P, but when tf becomes long enough, U 50 changing with P appears as a hump curve. As for v-t characteristic, it turns out that, with the length (l) of needle decreasing, both breakdown voltage and its dispersibility increase; it's also found that the shorter the needle is, the shorter delay that turning point occurs becomes. When tf changes, shape of v-t characteristic changes too, the v-t characteristic integration of different wave front times looks like a concave basin. The above phenomena are explained in the view of the ionization, diffusion and recombination of space charges.

Abstract: In order to ensure the safe operation of the gas insulated switchgear (GIS), on-site impulse withstand voltage test is becoming more and more important. Oscillating impulse voltage (OIV) is very suitable for the test due to its high efficiency. By detecting the partial discharge (PD) when conducting on-site impulse withstand voltage test, the insulation state of GIS can be known overall. The pulse current, ultrasonic, and ultra high frequency (UHF) are the mainly PD detection methods up to now. Among them, the UHF method is the most suitable method to detect the PD under OIV. However, there are electromagnetic interference signals generated by the impulse voltage generator which will influence the UHF detection results during the on-site impulse withstand voltage test. In this paper, the interference signals for the PD detection using UHF methods are analyzed. Based on this, an interference elimination method by using multiple UHF sensors for PD detection under OIV is introduced. This method is tested both in a lab environment and in field. The analyses show the interference signals for the PD detection using UHF methods under OIV is mainly related to the sphere-gap switch of impulse voltage generator. The results of lab experiments and field tests both show that the interference elimination method by using multiple UHF sensors is suitable for the PD detection under oscillating impulse voltage.

Abstract: Lightning activities are growing up rapidly with global warming. It can affect anything on the earth. All the constructed buildings need proper protection from the harmful effect of lightning. Lightning strike points on different geometrical shapes have been investigated. Lightning strike distribution of different building structure is very important to be studied. In order to analyse the maximum effect of lightning strike pattern is obtained of different air terminals installed on scaled building structures. High voltage impulse generator is used in order to get the impulse voltage. Different numbers of air terminals have been applied to all the shapes in order to see the lightning strike points. Electric field is obtained in order to see its minimum and maximum effect on the entire building structure. Interestingly the phenomenon of lightning air terminal bypasses has been proved in this paper.

Abstract: This paper reviews relevant published IEC standards on converter-fed motor insulation and discusses some technical issues on offline PD tests methods with repetitive impulse voltage of IEC60034-27-5. In order to qualify PD-free insulation system for IEC 60034-18-41, the detail of PD testing method should be fixed as possible in IEC 60034-27-5, while there are still arbitrary factors in PD measurements: how to select impulse generator, tolerance against deformation and so-called ringing of impulse waveform, how to decide thresholds values for PD detection against disturbance from impulse generator and selection of RPDIV or PDIV for pass criteria judgements of IEC 60034-18-41.

Abstract: This paper presents a quadrature pulse-position modulation (Q-PPM) impulse radio (IR) system, and its novel transceiver architecture for E-band wireless communications. In the Q-PPM IR system, the wavelet of the transmitted signal is time-shifted by multiples of 3 ps from the periodic base position. This paper focuses on the receiver architecture for demodulation of the Q-PPM IR signal. The principle and a detailed analysis of the demodulation scheme are described. The integrated receiver chip was developed in 55-nm CMOS technology. It includes all circuit blocks based on the proposed demodulation architecture, which consists of an in-phase/quadrature (IQ) demodulator, a symbol clock recovery circuit, and a local impulse generator. A measured conversion gain of about 4 dB in the 81–86-GHz frequency band is achieved.
