Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Different uptake mechanisms exist in the vacuolar membrane, a ΔpH-dependent uptake mechanism for specific endogenous flavonoid-glucoside, and a directly energized mechanism for abiotic glucosides, which appears to be the main transport system for these substrates.

TL;DR: Four known compounds including three phenolics, isovitexin, astragalin, and methyl gallate 3-O-β-D-(6'-O-galloyl)-glucopyranoside, and the terpene glucoside icariside B 2 have been isolated from the aerial parts of Circaea lutetiana ssp. canadensis.
Abstract: A new alcohol glycoside, 1-octyl α-D-arabinofuranosyl-(1→6)-β-D-glucopyranoside (1), four known compounds including three phenolics, isovitexin, astragalin, and methyl gallate 3-O-β-D-(6'-O-galloyl)-glucopyranoside (2), and the terpene glucoside icariside B 2 (3) have been isolated from the aerial parts of Circaea lutetiana ssp. canadensis.

TL;DR: It is shown that isovitexin has a strong toxic effect on mitochondria that is to a large extent abolished by glycosylation, which can be used to explain the aberrant morphology in Silene latifolia.
Abstract: The morphological mutant “isovitexin” in Silene latifolia (the white campion) has small and up-curled petals and leaves. In this mutant the aglycone isovitexin is the only flavone present in the vacuole. In the present study it is shown that isovitexin has a strong toxic effect on mitochondria that is to a large extent abolished by glycosylation. This effect can be used to explain the aberrant morphology. Isovitexin acts at the level of the ubiquinone pool; cytochrome c — cytochrome aa3 oxidase activity was unaffected, and with either reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide or succinate as a respiratory substrate, effects on respiration were found in Silene leaves-, potato (Solanum tuberosum) tuber- and sweet potato (Ipomoea batata L.) tuber mitochondria. Since in sweet potato electron transport via the cyanide insensitive pathway was also inhibited, with the ubiquinone pool as the only component (besides the dehydrogenases) shared by these two pathways, the site of inhibition must be at this level.

TL;DR: Two compounds, isovitexin and ursolic acid, were isolated from the aerial parts of Hedyotis dichotoma and the structures of both compounds were assigned using modern spectroscopic techniques.
Abstract: Two compounds, isovitexin and ursolic acid, were isolated from the aerial parts of Hedyotis dichotoma. Anti-microbial assays indicated that isovitexin was active against fungus and candida. The structures of both compounds were assigned using modern spectroscopic techniques.

TL;DR: In this article, a 70% ethanol extract from P aureus showed dose-dependent antioxidative activity (523% inhibition at 4 mg/ml) against lipid peroxidation assay, while the extract did not show the inhibitory activity of superoxide radical formation.
Abstract: Phaseolus aureus (mung bean), Leguminosae, has been used as an antidote from the ancient time Especially, it has been widely used for cleaning face and skin in oriental countries Although several constituents such as fatty acids, phytoallexin and phaseol derivatives were reported in P aureus and related species including seedlings, there has been a few report to describe its biological activity Therefore, in this investigation, the ethanol extract from P aureus was obtained and its biological activities including the antioxidative and anti-inflammatory activities were studied The 70% ethanol extract from P aureus showed dose-dependent antioxidative activity (523% inhibition at 4 mg/ml) against lipid peroxidation assay, while the extract did not show the inhibitory activity of superoxide radical formation The extract also showed the topical anti-inflammatory activity against croton-oil and arachidonic acid induced mouse ear edema test (18-19% inhibition at 75 mg/ear) as well as mild inhibitory activity against picryl chloride induced delayed hypersensitivity in mouse For investigating active principles, vitexin and isovitexin (apigenin C-glycoside) as flavonoids, and adenosine were isolated from the extract using silica gel chromatography The actual contents of vitexin and isovitexin were found to be 37 and 24 mg/g extract, respectively Vitexin and isovitexin showed the antioxidative activity They showed the topical anti-inflammatory activity, although the activities were not potent compared to the reference compounds These results suggested that vitexin and isovitexin may be, at least in part, the compounds contributing the antioxidative activity in vitro and the topical anti-inflammatory activity of P aureus in vivo All results of present study might be one of the scientific rationale in using mung bean for skin care from the ancient time
