TL;DR: The proposed organization of dedicated hardware digital signal processors is shown to be highly modular and well suited to integrated circuit implementation, and offers a significantly better performance when compared with existing realizations using prepackaged multipliers.
Abstract: An approach to the machine organization of dedicated hardware digital signal processors is proposed that is based on a specialized representation of the processing coefficients derived from the canonical signed-digit code. This leads to a realization requiting the minimum number of add/subtract operations to mechanize the required multiplications and additions. The proposed organization is shown to be highly modular and well suited to integrated circuit implementation, and offers a significantly better performance when compared with existing realizations using prepackaged multipliers.

Abstract: A coat model is presented in this paper for balancing a stochastic assembly line where the incompletions on the line are handled on the basis of a modular assembly concept. The model proposed is a modification of the approach by Kottas and Lau and incorporates the provision of task times being greater than the cycle time for a customer oriented production system offering structural variations in the product. The assembly line was simulated using the balance obtained by the proposed model for estimation of in-process-atorage capacity for physical layout and design of the assembly line.

Abstract: A modular interface unit to serve as a building block in the framework of an Input-Output Subsystem of a digital data processing system. The unit, designated as a Base Module, manages a group of Intelligent I/O Interface Control units (Line Control Processors) and provides a Base Module distribution-control interface called a Distribution Card unit. A group of Line Control Processors have a common set of backplane connections to the distribution-control means and to a maintenance unit and termination control unit. The maintenance unit permits the exercising and diagnosis of any selected Line Control Processor on the Base Module. The termination control unit provides clocking and control functions for all of the Line Control Processors in the module and also common termination impedances for the interconnecting backplane lines. Means are provided for priority ranking of the various Line Control Processors within the Base Module unit. The Base Module unit provides a building block by which a central processing unit of a digital data processing system may be expanded to handle a large number of peripheral devices with simplicity and reliability.

Abstract: This paper describes the algorithms used by METAP - a transients program with a modular, expandable element-library. Each element is a computationally independent entity that can encapsulate an arbitrarily detailed model of a power system device - a synchronous machine or a transformer, for instance - together with a numerical procedure especially suited to the calculation of its responses. New elements can be added to the library whenever new models Or numerical procedures are needed. This modeling and computational flexibility is made possible by the use of unusual procedures for describing and solving networks. These procedures are described in some detail and their applicational aspects illustrated by means of an example.

TL;DR: The BGRAF2 language for interactive real-time 2D graphics was designed as a user-oriented language emphasizing ease of use rather than of implementation, and procedural statements allow straightforward computation while classlike characteristics encourage modular graphics programming.
Abstract: The BGRAF2 language for interactive real-time 2D graphics was designed as a user-oriented language emphasizing ease of use rather than of implementation. Procedural statements allow straightforward computation while classlike characteristics encourage modular graphics programming. The clock and event data types facilitate creation of parallel and synchronous procedures automatically acting on structures and display files. A graphic procedure, which includes procedural, drawing and event-driven statements, is a graphic prototype. Such procedures may be nested and iteratively or recursively called. An individual invocation of a procedure, called a graphic object, shares code while commanding its own data structures and images.

Abstract: A storage rack system of modular construction which comprises a plurality of pre-cut parts which are joined together in an array to receive storage containers. The storage containers can be cans, bottles, jars, tubes, etc. The pre-cut parts are limited to a small number of uniform shapes and sizes so that a person with minimal mechanical ability will nevertheless be able to construct the storage rack. The system is designed so that the storage containers themselves provide the principal structural support for the storage rack system.

TL;DR: A flexible design approach for real-time digital filtering implementations using semiconductor read-only or random access memories which can be adjusted to suit hardware availability is presented.
Abstract: Recent advances in the technology of medium and large scale integrated circuits (m.s.i. and l.s.i.) have made possible economical hardware implementations for real-time digital filtering. A flexible design approach for such implementations is presented. The processing mode can be varied to give any hybrid structure between the purely serial and parallel realizations. This leads to a design approach which can be adjusted to suit hardware availability. The resulting structures are modular and are in line with current trends in m.s.i. and l.s.i. technology in that they lend themselves readily to implementations using semiconductor read-only or random access memories.

TL;DR: The proposed approach involves the estimation of the information transfer between the modules of the system, which necessitates the creation of a multivariate binary probability measure representing the problem, which leads in turn to a general criterion for the decomposition of theSystem into its most independent subsystems, or modules.
Abstract: The hierarchical decomposition of a general system is a powerful tool in the reduction of complexity, as has been recognized by various authors. It may be used either to simplify an already existing system, or as an aid to the design of a new system. This paper is concerned with decomposition in the latter sense, being an approach to the modular design of complex systems. The proposed approach involves the estimation of the information transfer between the modules of the system. This necessitates the creation of a multivariate binary probability measure representing the problem, which leads in turn to a general criterion for the decomposition of the system into its most independent subsystems, or modules. As an application, the detection of the modular structure of a computer operating system is discussed.

TL;DR: In this article, three approaches for packaging the elements of a 30 cm ion thruster subsystem into a modular thrust subsystem are presented for a multimission set of interplanetary flights with the space shuttle interim upper stage as the launch vehicle.
Abstract: Three approaches are presented for packaging the elements of a 30 cm ion thruster subsystem into a modular thrust subsystem. The individual modules, when integrated into a conceptual solar electric propulsion module are applicable to a multimission set of interplanetary flights with the space shuttle interim upper stage as the launch vehicle. The emphasis is on the structural and thermal integration of the components into the modular thrust subsystems. Thermal control for the power processing units is either by direct radiation through louvers in combination with heat pipes or an all heat pipe system. The propellant storage and feed system and thruster gimbal system concepts are presented. The three approaches are compared on the basis of mass, cost, testing, interfaces, simplicity, reliability, and maintainability.

TL;DR: In this paper, an analytical photogrammetric system utilizing a small-format non-metric camera meets the accuracy requirements of geological work, and that the method is not only technically feasible but in fact practical to use in geological mapping.
Abstract: The collection of structural data in mines is an integral part of the search for geologic indicators of mine-roof instability. We used close-range photogrammetry in conjunction with conventional geologic field methods to collect the necessary data. Stereopairs of photos were taken with 70-mm and also with 35-mm non-metric cameras. The structural geologic data were acquired and displayed by a computerized, analytical approach. Object-space control was obtained by using a modular aluminum frame consisting of eight cubic sections that can be assembled in various configurations. Photocoordinates were measured with a stereocomparator and reduced by the Direct Linear Transformation (DLT) method, which involved 11 transformation unknowns for each photograph. The least-squares method was used to determine the equations of the planes, using four to ten point measurements for each plane. The four tests described in this paper show that an analytical photogrammetric system utilizing a small-format non- metric camera meets the accuracy requirements of geological work, and that the method is not only technically feasible but in fact practical to use in geological mapping.

Abstract: A double helical earthquake and fire escape structure for multiple story buildings formed mainly of a plurality of prefabricated section of precast concrete. Two identically formed upper sectional units and two identically formed lower units are arranged in facing relationship to each other for each floor of the building. Complementary portions of the assembled units combine to form a pair of oppositely disposed entrances on each floor leading to two separate helical slides arranged about a separately formed central circular smokestack. The units are provided with steel members adjacent their edges which are connected together and secured to a surrounding supporting steel framework. Two additional smokestacks formed within the corners of the assembled units may also be used as shoe drops.
