TL;DR: A two-step synthesis of 5,7diaryl-3,4dihydro-4-oxo-5H-pyrano[2,3d]pyrimidines has been reported in this paper based on condensation of 2-thiobarbiturates with chalcones followed by reductive desulfurization.
Abstract: A novel two step synthesis of 5,7-diaryl-3,4-dihydro-4-oxo-5H-pyrano[2,3-d]pyrimidines has been reported based on condensation of 2-thiobarbiturates with chalcones followed by reductive desulfurization of 5,7-diaryl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-4-oxo-2-thioxo-5H-pyrano[2,3-d]pyrimidines with nickel boride.

TL;DR: In this paper, a variety of chalcones are rapidly reduced to the corresponding tetrahydrochalcones in high yields with nickel boride, generated in situ, in dry methanol at ambient temperature.
Abstract: A variety of chalcones is rapidly reduced to the corresponding tetrahydrochalcones in high yields with nickel boride, generated in situ, in dry methanol at ambient temperature. The halo, methoxy and methyl groups remain unaffected under these conditions.

TL;DR: In this article, the feasibility of new materials to be used as support for boron-nickel catalysts was investigated and the results showed that the adequate materials to use as cata- lysts supports are commercial silica and Rehy- droxilated Perlite.
Abstract: The main objective of this work is to study the feasibility of new materials to be used as support for boron-nickel catalysts. Potential support materials such as: silica gel, alumina, hydrothermal modified Perlites and zeolite 4A, were characterized by BET, TPR and DRX. After the addition of Ni and B, their catalytic activity evaluated with the nitro- benzene hydrogenation model reaction. The influ- ence of operational parameters during the impregna- tion process such as order of reactants, speed of agi- tation, time of aging and it influences from the pre- vious thermal treatment were evaluated. The results show that the adequate materials to be used as cata- lysts supports are the commercial silica and Rehy- droxilated Perlite. It is due to the existence of super- ficial OH groups, which allow the anchorage of the nickel boride catalyst.
