Abstract: A system for recovering the energy from atmospheric wind wherein a windmill operates a compressor for compressing air which is stored in one or more tanks. The compressed air is used to drive a prime mover coupled by gear means to an electrical generator or other work-producing apparatus. The prime mover is operated by hydraulic fluid responsive to the application of the compressed air to fluid tanks by valve means responsive to the operation of the prime mover. The compressor has a unique means for lubricating the same. Alternately, the prime mover can be operated by conventional water pressure during periods of little or no wind.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors propose a flexible tubular pumping system for sea water, where lever arm struts are coupled with swivel connector linkage to form a flexible beam or truss structure that permits the pumping elements to flex axially as complex wave systems and currents apply natural multiplanar forces to the floats.
Abstract: Method and apparatus wherein complex multiplanar surface motion of the sea or other fluid body is converted into usable energy. One embodiment of the apparatus comprises a pair of flexible tubular pumping elements that pump a fluid, such as sea water, to load such as a storage means or an energy converter such as a turbine driven prime mover. The apparatus makes use of multiplanar waves and surface currents that axially flex the pumping elements to provide hydraulic or pneumatic pressure for pumping the water. Floats distributed along the pumping elements support the apparatus horizontally at the surface of the sea and act as a breakwater. Lever arm struts, attached to the floats, are coupled together with swivel connector linkage to form a flexible beam or truss structure that permits the pumping elements to flex axially as complex wave systems and currents apply natural multiplanar forces to the floats. Protective chord segments, connected between adjacent strut ends, act as an expansion curb to prevent the pumping elements from flexing or expanding excessively due to strong surface currents and waves. Output tube segments connected to outlet valves on the pumping elements direct pumped fluid to a collector tube for transfer to the load. The output tube segments may be formed of flexible tubing or the lever arm struts may be tubular and adapted for delivering the pumped fluid to the collector tube. To maximize sensitivity of the apparatus and minimize vulnerability to damage the fluid carrying collector tube is maintained below the surface of the water and the apparatus is provided with an anti-fouling coating to prevent such resistance as barnacle build-up.

TL;DR: In this paper, a control system for obtaining maximum power output from electrical generating water pumping, flywheel storage and like systems comprising a wind-driven prime mover coupled to an electrical generator over an extended range of wind velocities is described.
Abstract: A control system for obtaining maximum power output from electrical generating water pumping, flywheel storage and like systems comprising a wind-driven prime mover coupled to an electrical generator over an extended range of wind velocities is described. The maximum electrical output power is obtained by synchronizing the speed of the generator, and hence the speed of the prime mover, with the maximum power output of the prime mover. Since the maximum output power of a wind-driven prime mover is proportional to the third power of the wind velocity, and is a function of an angular velocity-dependent power coefficient, means are provided for detecting the angular velocity of the prime mover and generating a signal proportional to the cube of said wind velocity. The singal thus generated is used for controlling the magnitude of the excitation field current in the electrical generating apparatus whereby the electrical output varies approximately as a cubic function of the wind velocity and, consequently, as a linear function of the output power of the prime mover. For this purpose the control-signal generating means employs a solid state device or the like which is biased to operate along the third power portion of its characteristic operating curve.

TL;DR: In this paper, the door of a carrier of goods, such as a truck or railway car, is locked when the carrier is parked and inoperative, using a latch mechanism including a bolt spring biased to a latched position and a piston and cylinder mechanism coupled to the latch mechanism.
Abstract: The system maintains the door of a carrier of goods, such as a truck or railway car, locked when the carrier is parked and inoperative. The system includes a latch mechanism including a bolt spring biased to a latched position and a piston and cylinder mechanism coupled to the latch mechanism in such a way that air pressure applied to the cylinder moves the bolt to an unlatched position. The cylinder is connected by a conduit to a source of air pressure operated by the prime mover of the carrier and a valve mechanism is coupled to the conduit and is manually operable to vent, or supply air pressure to, the cylinder to operate the latch mechanism. When the prime mover is inoperative or disconnected and the carrier is at rest, air pressure is vented from the cylinder to latch the door to prevent theft of goods.

TL;DR: In this article, an under-speed actuator valve unit includes a piston which is hydraulically responsive to the differential pressure in order to adjust operation of a lever which controls displacement of the pump unit.
Abstract: A hydrostatic unit of the type contemplated by the present invention includes one or more pump and motor combinations interconnected by means of a conventional closed loop. Controls for the hydrostatic unit include a speed control and vent valve assembly as well as a venturi manifold which functions to normally establish a selected pressure differential in a pair of supply conduits for determining instant operating conditions for the transmission. Abstract: An energy storage system having a limited capacity is employed for the purpose of (i) removing the burden of acceleration from internal and external-combustion type prime movers used in rubber-tired and rail urban mass transit vehicles and (ii) providing an efficient regenerative braking system to significantly increase fuel economy during typical stop-start vehicle schedules. Energy is stored in a hydraulic accumulator which is designed to be an integral part of the propulsion system. Data from laboratory tests are presented to indicate achievable energy conversion efficiencies. Computer simulation of various size vehicles being driven over typical transit-vehicle schedules is used to estimate the reduction in vehicular emissions ans energy consumption resulting from the energy storage capability. An increase in fuel economy of up to 30% and an emissions reduction of up to 36% (NO sub x) were observed for the spark-ignited prime mover. When a simple cycle, single shaft gas turbine was simulated, the maximum increase in fuel economy was 24% with up to 50% reduction in emissions.
