TL;DR: In this article, a disk drive and method for data transfer initiated by nonstandard disk drive commands on a serial interface that only supports standard disk-drive commands is disclosed. But the method is limited to the first data block accessible using a first standard disk drive command.
Abstract: A disk drive and method are disclosed for data transfer initiated by nonstandard disk-drive commands on a serial interface that only supports standard disk-drive commands. In the method, a nonstandard disk-drive command for data transfer is embedded within a first data block accessible using a first standard disk-drive command. The first standard disk-drive command is transmitted through the serial interface causing the first data block to be transferred from the host computer to the disk control system. The embedded command is extracted from the transferred first data block and provided to the disk control system. A status response is transmitted to the host computer based on the extracted command. At least one additional standard disk-drive command is transmitted through the serial interface to the disk control system for transferring the identified data between the host computer and the disk drive.

TL;DR: A serial flash-memory chip has a serial-bus interface to an external controller as mentioned in this paper, where data in a write-request packet is written to the flash memory, and a message packet is sent back over the serial bus.
Abstract: A serial flash-memory chip has a serial-bus interface to an external controller. A flash-memory block in the serial flash-memory chip can be read by the external controller sending a read-request packet over the serial bus to the serial flash-memory chip, which reads the flash memory and sends the data back in a data-payload field in a completion packet. Data in a write-request packet is written to the flash memory, and a message packet sent back over the serial bus. The serial bus can be a Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) Express bus with bi-directional pairs of differential lines. Packets have modified-PCI-Express headers that define the packet type and data-payload length. Vendor-defined packets can send flash commands such as reset, erase, or responses after operations such as program or erase. A serial engine and microcontroller or state machine are on the serial flash-memory chip.

TL;DR: In this article, a method and system for using a wireless enabled portable computer system as a wireless modem is presented, where a software bridge is provided that copies commands and/or data from the port 1 over to the port 2 and vice-versa.
Abstract: A method and system for using a wireless enabled portable computer system as a wireless modem. The portable computer system may be a personal digital assistant (PDA) having an internal wireless modem. The internal wireless modem, e.g., GSM radio, contains a communication port (port2) that communicates with a processor of the portable computer system. The portable computer system also contains another communication port (port1) that is externally available for connection to a second computer system. A software bridge is provided that copies commands and/or data from the port1 over to the port2 and vice-versa. The software bridge allows the second computer system to directly use the internal wireless modem of the portable computer system when the portable computer system is connected to the second computer. The connection to the second computer system can be made by a wired connection (e.g., serial interface, RS232) or by a wireless connection, e.g., Bluetooth or infra-red communication. The port1 and the port2 can be serial communication ports which may be UART compliant. The PDA thus extends wireless functionality to a second computer system (e.g., a notebook) using conventional connection mechanisms for communicating with the second computer system.

TL;DR: The solution uses a Virtex-II Pro device with an IBM PowerPC™ 405 (PPC405) processor to perform a partial reconfiguration of the pre-emphasis and differential swing control attributes for RocketIO multi-gigabit transceivers (MGTs).
Abstract: This application note describes in-circuit partial reconfiguration of RocketIO™ transceiver attributes using the Virtex-II Pro™ internal configuration access port (ICAP). The solution uses a Virtex-II Pro device with an IBM PowerPC™ 405 (PPC405) processor to perform a partial reconfiguration of the pre-emphasis (TX_PREEMPHASIS) and differential swing control (TX_DIFF_CTRL) attributes for RocketIO multi-gigabit transceivers (MGTs). These attributes must be modified to optimize the MGT signal transmission prior to and after a system has been deployed in the field. This solution is also ideal for characterization, calibration, and system testing. The hardware and software elements of this solution can be easily integrated into any Virtex-II Pro design already utilizing the PLB bus structure. This application note uses the reference design accompanying XAPP661, which implements peripherals with a Xilinx Intellectual Property Interface (IPIF) to the PLB bus. A PLB ICAP module is instantiated and controlled through software running on the PPC405 processor. Design modules to facilitate biterror rate tests (BERT) and pseudo-random binary sequence (PRBS) diagnostics are also included. A terminal interface over a serial port connection allows users to set and modify MGT attributes via a command line. Application note XAPP660 documents the partial reconfiguration of MGT attributes using a register interface. This black box approach provides a thin IP software based solution for designers not originally intending to use the PPC405 processor in their designs. This can be a preferred solution for updating the MGT attributes once a slot ID has been sampled, after power has been applied to a board. The application developer can later expand the capabilities of the PPC405 in the design through the IBM CoreConnect™ (PLB, OPB) modular features described in this application note.

Abstract: A remote control device is described. The remote control device uses a network chip directly mounted on a motherboard of a server computer to remote control the server computer without any additional network card requirement. The remote control device includes a basic input output system (BIOS), a COM port, a baseboard management controller (BMC), and a network chip. The BIOS redirects video data to the COM port and then the same to the BMC. The BMC transforms the video data into network packets according to a Q-Telnet protocol. The BMC recognizes the Q-Telnet protocol and a standard Telnet protocol effectively. Therefore, the network chip uses a UDP 623 port to control the BMC and a TCP 23 port to transmit data and commands using the standard Telnet protocol.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose an interface-signal selector IFS, and a transfer programmer TP for issuing a control signal to instruct the selection from among the parallel interfaces.
Abstract: Some interface signals are selected from among signals of a plurality of different parallel interfaces, then being multiplexed onto a serial connection. A transmitter of a signal transmission system includes an interface-signal selector IFS, and a transfer programmer TP for issuing a control signal to instruct the selection from among the parallel interfaces. The transfer programmer TP implements the multiplexing of the selected interface signals in such a manner that the specification of the parallel interfaces is satisfied. Also, the transfer programmer TP changes, as occasion requires, the control signal to instruct which interfaces to select. This change allows the interface signals to be multiplexed onto the serial connection while dynamically changing the interface signals to be multiplexed.
