TL;DR: In this paper, the authors provide an analytical framework and a series of case studies to illuminate impediments posed to sustainability by contrasting biophysical constraints and human perspectives on what should be sustained.
Abstract: Meeting human needs while sustaining the planet’s life support systems is the fundamental challenge of our time. What role sustenance of biodiversity and contrasting ecosystem services should play in achieving a sustainable future varies along philosophical, cultural, institutional, societal, and governmental divisions. Contrasting biophysical constraints and perspectives on human well-being arise both within and across countries that span the tropics and temperate zone. Direct sustenance of livelihoods from ecosystem services in East Africa contrasts with the complex and diverse relationships with the land in Mexico and the highly monetary-based economy of the United States. Lack of understanding of the contrasting contexts in which decision-making about trade-offs occurs creates impediments to collective global efforts to sustain the Earth’s life support systems. While theoretical notions of the goals of sustainability science seek a unified path forward, realities on the ground present challenges. This Special Feature seeks to provide both an analytical framework and a series of case studies to illuminate impediments posed to sustainability by contrasting biophysical constraints and human perspectives on what should be sustained. The contributors aim to clarify the trade-offs posed to human welfare in sustaining biodiversity and ecosystem services and the challenges in managing for a sustainable future in which human well-being is not compromised as compared to today. Our goal is to provide novel insights on how sustainability can be achieved internationally through exploration of constraints, trade-offs, and human values examined at multiple scales, and across geographic regions from a range of cultural perspectives.

TL;DR: In this article, the formation and the sustenance of industrial clusters has been investigated by examining the experience of some of the prominent and successful clusters, their formation and sustenance in the three countries.
Abstract: Clusters have several advantages. These include a high degree of networking which stimulates productivity, ability to diversify and to acquire the capacity to new products when the demand for existing products falls. The policy makers are searching ways to create new clusters. With an even more globalized world and increased competition the appeal of clusters has become stronger and more urgent. Yet, the formation and the sustenance of the clusters has somehow remained a mystery. There has been a limited research carried out in this direction. No doubt it is a complex area and no figurative results can be highlighted to show as to how the development of industrial clusters has taken place. The authors go about seeking answers to these questions by examining the experience of some of the prominent and successful clusters, their formation and sustenance in the three countries. The study further investigates various initiatives, the role and the results thereof in development of clusters.

Abstract: This article reviews contemporary literature on home care of the seriously ill child with complex care needs and the sick child/parent dyad. The literature search revealed three major themes, namely the increasing acuity of child illness, the evolving role of the parent as care provider, and the health professional as care provider. While there is much known about the complexity of care of children and the role of family in that care, little is known about what families require in terms of support and sustenance during the long years of care provision.

Abstract: Cultural approaches to understanding the modern organization date back to the Human Relations studies of the 1920s. To understand the phenomenology of the modern firm, cultural theorists have explored the roles of power and meaning in the social construction of rational, and just, organizational practices. Neoinstitutionalists have recently turned their attention to how organizational practices travel across time and space, the role of agency in the construction and sustenance of the cultural practices of the firm, and the microfoundations of meaning in organizational practice.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors synthesize two issues within theistic metaphysics, namely the metaphysics of creaturely properties and the nature of unshareable properties, or tropes.
Abstract: I aim to synthesize two issues within theistic metaphysics. The first concerns the metaphysics of creaturely properties and, more specifically, the nature of unshareable properties, or tropes. The second concerns the metaphysics of providence and, more specifically, the way in which God sustains creatures, or sustenance. I propose that creaturely properties, understood as what I call modifier tropes, are identical with divine acts of sustenance, understood as acts of property-conferral. I argue that this theistic conferralism is attractive because it integrates trope theory and the doctrine of sustenance in a mutually enhancing way. Taking modifier tropes to be divine acts mitigates certain weaknesses of trope theory and safeguards divine sustenance from the threat of both deism and occasionalism.

TL;DR: The authors examined the bodily practices and material substances that shaped the Inca king's physical person during his lifetime, as well as after his death, and found that the royal body was made conspicuous through a series of ritual and symbolic actions devised to display the king's faculty to infuse vital force to all living creatures under his rule.
Abstract: The worship of dead Inca kings, because it aimed at preserving the deceased's bodily integrity, reveals constituent aspects of royal personhood. Underpinning these practices was the conception that the dead's agency was conveyed through corporeal substances, which therefore required constant acts of sustenance. This paper examines the bodily practices and material substances that shaped the king's physical person during his lifetime, as well as after his death. These data show that the royal body was made conspicuous through a series of ritual and symbolic actions devised to display the king's faculty to infuse vital force to all living creatures under his rule he thus stood as the source of prosperity for his subjects with which he was engaged in reciprocal obligations of life sustenance. I argue that these “embodied technologies of power” shaped a system of representations that legitimated the king's appropriation of state resources.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the causes of students' low enrolment in technical colleges and suggested how sustenance of students interest in prevocational education in junior secondary schools can help to curtail this trend.
Abstract: The future of Nigeria as a nation depends on her youths who are currently undergoing training in schools. They need all forms of assistance to increase and sustain their interest in prevocational education towards fostering enrolment into technical colleges. Despite the vital role Technical, vocational education and training programmes are observed to be playing all over the world in addressing youth unemployment, poverty and skill development, they still remain greatly detested by Nigerian parents and students as seen in the low enrolment into technical colleges. This may be as a result of the poor societal perception and attitude of the programmes as education for the low achievers, never-to-do-wells and those who cannot cope with the sciences and social sciences. This paper therefore, examined the causes of students’ low enrolment in technical colleges and suggested how sustenance of students’ interest in prevocational education in junior secondary schools can help to curtail this trend. It is recommended among others that: the government should re-address the issue of funding and providing enabling facilities to ease learning-by-doing in prevocational education towards fostering enrolment in technical colleges.

TL;DR: It is axiomatic to posit that there is a linkage between youth and national integration; therefore, the role of youth on national development cannot be over emphasised as mentioned in this paper. But, the transition of society from one generation to another is critical to the formative and developmental aspiration of such society.
Abstract: It is axiomatic to posit that there is a linkage between youth and national integration. This intercourse is not only symbiotically connected; but, one depends on the other for its sustenance. Therefore, the role of youth on national development cannot be over emphasised. The wheel of development of any country lies on the shoulder of how productive and creative the youthful populations are. The youth in any society are the engine of growth and development; because, they provide the labour force for production of goods and service to take effect. And also, are the critical masses of people, whose action and inaction can develop or destroy the hegemonies/fabrics of their society. For example according to the 2006 census, the youthful population constituted over 70% of the population. So, therefore, this quantum of population is a great asset for the Nigerian state if they are harnessed and utilized in the right direction. Interestingly, the transition of society from one generation to another is critical to the formative and developmental aspiration of such society. That, is why society that prepare their youth for the sake of future aspiration will not only secure her future development; but, will prepare her next set of leaders with the challenges of national reconciliation and development. So, therefore, the role of youth on national development is sacrosanct to the whole developmental aspiration of any society. The youth are the cornerstone to societal rejuvenation. Societies are not only recreated through the youthful population, but, youth are often referring to as leaders of tomorrow. As the most active segment of any society, youths are the major determiners of peace and stability of a nation (Ozohu-Sulaiman, 2006). Conversely, the degree of disorderliness and instability in society is also determined in part by youths. Peace is a precursor of development. The absence of peace means that no meaningful development can take place. The National Youths Policy affirms that the extent of the youth's “responsible conduct and roles in society is positively correlated with the development of their country”. (FGN, 2001:1)

TL;DR: This essay explores the sustenance of the Five Tribes and considers how changing from a diet of fresh flora and fauna to caloriedense, fatty, and carbohydrateladen meals may have contributed to their declining health.
Abstract: In response to white settlers’ demands for tribal lands in the southeast, Congress passed the Indian Removal Act in 1830. The “Five Tribes”—Cherokees, Choctaws, Chickasaws, Muscogees (Creeks), and Seminoles—were then forced to Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). Natives had access to a vast array of fruits, vegetables, and game meats, and until the Civil War, their health problems appeared to be maladies such as wounds, parasites, contagious diseases, and illnesses associated with unsanitary conditions. Around the mid1860s, natives’ diets began changing in two ways: either they included an overabundance of wheat flour, sugar, salt, and lard that resulted in dietrelated ailments such as diabetes, obesity, and tooth decay; or the amount of food was inadequate, and natives suffered from malnutrition. Using testimonies of early explorers and elderly residents of 1930s Oklahoma who recalled their days in the Territory, this essay explores the sustenance of the Five Tribes and considers how changing from a diet of fresh flora and fauna to caloriedense, fatty, and carbohydrateladen meals may have contributed to their declining health.

Abstract: From the consumer's point of view, food is at the same time among the most trivial and the most complex of all product groups. Food is at the same time a mundane and a functional product. Sometimes we eat for sustenance, for example, while sitting behind our desks when typing reports, and at other times having an elaborate dinner is a pleasurable situation and helps us to strengthen family and friendship bonds.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors make an effort to understand the views and values of the present and past that appear consistently divergent, and recognise the growing initiatives that call for knowledge to be freely shared through means of open licensing.
Abstract: Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) appear to be vital for the sustenance of our present society. Not only do they seem to protect the original works of creators but they also fight infringement, a major problem in today’s world. But do we really need to fear the use of our works by others? Is it right to consider knowledge as a commodity and seek recognition for it? Ancient Indian scriptures appear to suggest that people of the Indian sub-continent did not uphold the concept of ownership of bases of knowledge and believed that knowledge was to be passed down without reservations: A Parampara (tradition ) of the Guru ( the erudite teacher) and Sishya (the understudy). This article is an effort to understand the views and values of the present and past that appear consistently divergent. In this paper we also recognise the growing initiatives that call for knowledge to be freely shared through means of open licensing. In fact these initiatives across the world are indicative of a rising movement with high potential for change in people’s perspectives for a better world where knowledge is free. This paper in this context is our humble attempt to reconnect with the values of the past.

TL;DR: This article conducted a qualitative study of former parole agents to understand how they experience their work and found that parole agents recognized and held a fundamental tension between casework and law enforcement, were regularly exposed to intense affective experiences that influenced their practices, developed characteristic ways of managing the anxieties and stressors in their work, and found organizational dynamics to be sources of strain and sustenance.
Abstract: The maintenance of public “safety and security” drives the functioning of correctional systems, yet rarely addressed are the ways the individuals who work in such systems maintain their own psychological safety and security. In the tradition of practice-informed research, the author designed and implemented an exploratory, qualitative research study of former parole agents (N = 23) that aimed to understand how they experience their work. Findings suggest that parole agents recognized and held a fundamental tension between casework and law enforcement, were regularly exposed to intense affective experiences that influenced their practices, developed characteristic ways of managing the anxieties and stressors in their work, and found organizational dynamics to be sources of strain and sustenance. This article provides an overview of the study design and findings, as well as their implications for social work practice and practice informed research.

Abstract: The paper highlights about the importance of total quality management in libraries. It is an view that the condition which challenged in libraries of Total Quality Management are very much prevalent here. It is not; however, clear if library managers are effecting the necessary changes to satisfy their clients. In the face of these challenges it is now time for libraries to exhibit that they are valuable to the continued survival and sustenance of their organizations. This can be done best by activity management. Components of TQM are employee involvement and training, problem solving teams, statistical methods, long term goals and thinking and recognition that the system, not people produces inefficiencies. It is a systematic process, which focuses on understanding customer needs and improving customer services.

TL;DR: In this article, the imprint trends and status of deforestation across the Nigerian nation with particular reference to Enugu State was examined and it was found out that forest resources of Enugu state are under pressure from urbanisation, infrastructure development, residential construction, population growth, and expansion of agricultural crop cultivation.
Abstract: In recent time, concern on the trends and status of forest and associated deforestation activities in developing countries like Nigeria, Enugu State inclusive, has increased. This concern has prompted a range of researches into the causes and the effects of deforestation by different authors as well as the investigation of the possible economic contributions of this sector to the national growth and development indices. This paper examines the imprint trends and status of deforestation across the Nigerian nation with particular reference to Enugu State. Descriptive statistics was used for data analysis in this research paper. We found out that forest resources of Enugu State are under pressure from urbanisation, infrastructure development, residential construction, population growth, and expansion of agricultural crop cultivation. Evidence of these pressures is the growing degradation of both community and state forest within the country especially in the study area, Enugu State. Therefore, notwithstanding the economic contributions of deforestation through income and employment generation to the state and national GDP, we recommend that there is need for the sustenance of the community and state forests. This is required so that non-timber forest products (NTFPs) and non-wood forest products (NWFPs) which are needed in promoting rural welfare, income and employment generation, urban and rural livelihood sustenance, poverty reduction and sustainable forest management in the state and the country at large can be retained.

TL;DR: The working lives of early modern seafarers were embedded in a thick web of legal regulation, often across multiple jurisdictions, and at the same time their activities contributed to the shape and development of that framework as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: The working lives of early modern seafarers were embedded in a thick web of legal regulation, often across multiple jurisdictions, and at the same time their activities contributed to the shape and development of that framework. Contracts and wage agreements, recognised rights to treatment, protection, sustenance and remuneration, and the policies of governments all structured the labouring conditions of sailors, and the words and actions of seafarers aboard ship led to, and were reinterpreted in, lawsuits ashore. How we perceive seafarers’ legal world is therefore critical to how we understand their social relations, both aboard ship and elsewhere, and their role in the growth of imperial power and maritime trade which characterised the early modern period.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors suggest an understanding of the characteristics of the Malay cultural landscape through Pantun, woodcarving and old literature in the process of understanding the authentic values of Malay culture.
Abstract: Background: The Malays traditionally and especially before the arrival of Islam were animistic in their belief. Their lives were closely inter-twinned with nature for sustenance as well as for the spiritual and emotional comfort. They respect the natural world of the seen as well as the unseen. With the advent of Islam most of the animistic beliefs of the Malays have been discarded. However, the awe that the Malays have toward the forest or the river, the sea or the mountain is still a reminiscence of their ancestral beliefs. These beliefs have helped them survive the hostile environment they had evolved from and acquire a great deal of knowledge and understanding about their natural surrounding which has been handed down from generation to generation. Objectives: This paper suggests an understanding of the characteristics of the Malay cultural landscape through pantun, woodcarving and old literature Results: The Malay Pantun, Malay Woodcarvings and the literature in Bustan Al-Salatin are analyzed in the process of understanding an authentic values of the Malay cultural landscape. Conclusion: The Malay cultural landscape is unique and always been used by the traditional community and an inspiration for art and crafts. TL;DR: For centuries, innovation was a political and contested concept and linguistic weapon used against one's enemy as mentioned in this paper, and opponents of innovation used arguments from ethos and pathos to give power and sustenance to their criticisms and to challenge the innovators.
Abstract: For centuries, innovation was a political and contested concept and linguistic weapon used against one's enemy. To support their case, opponents of innovation made use of arguments from ethos and pathos to give power and sustenance to their criticisms and to challenge the innovators. However, since the nineteenth century the arguments have changed completely. Innovation gradually got rehabilitated. This article looks at one type of rehabilitation: the semantic rehabilitation. People started to reread history and to redescribe what innovation is. What was bad innovation became good innovation because of long-lasting and beneficial effects, so it was believed.
