TL;DR: A new subgenus of the bee genus Megachile (Megachilinae: Megachilini) is described from Mt. Matang in Borneo, and is most noteworthy for the possession of arolia on all pretarsi of both sexes.
Abstract: A new subgenus of the bee genus Megachile (Megachilinae: Megachilini) is described from Mt. Matang in Borneo. Matangapis, new subgenus, is proposed for Megachile alticola Cameron, and is most noteworthy for the possession of arolia on all pretarsi of both sexes. The significance of arolia on M. alticola is briefly discussed in the context of the distinctiveness of the tribes Megachilini and Osmiini. Notes on two Oriental subgenera of Megachile, Orientocressoniella and Neocressoniella, are appended. The following taxonomic changes are proposed: Orientocressoniella is a new junior synonym of Callomegachile, Neocressoniella is a new junior synonym of Xanthosarus, Anthophora barbata Fabricius is a new synonym (senior but suppressed) of M. carbonaria Smith, M. amputatiformis Cockerell is a new junior synonym of M. saigonensis Cockerell, M. saphira Cockerell is a new junior synonym of M. ulrica Nurse. In addition, the following five species are newly transferred to subgenus Chelostomoda: M. ulrica, M. ...

TL;DR: A revision of the type specimens of the Eocene fish species described by Agassiz from Bolca and deposited in the Museum national d'Histoire naturelle, Paris, revealed that the putative Eocene sparids include the monotypic genera Abromasta, Pseudosparnodus, and Ellaserrata, and it is shown that haemulids are absent from the Eolithic fauna of Bolca.
Abstract: A revision of the type specimens of the Eocene fish species described by Agassiz from Bolca (Italy) and deposited in the Museum national d'Histoire naturelle, Paris, revealed that the putative Eocene sparids include the monotypic genera Abromasta (with the species A. microdon (Agassiz, 1839)), Pseudosparnodus (with the species P. microstomus (Agassiz, 1839)), and less definitely Ellaserrata (with the species E. monksi Day, 2003), in addition to the genus Sparnodus with two species, S. vulgaris (Blainville, 1818) and S. elongatus Agassiz, 1839. The validity of the latter is restored. Dentex leptacanthus Agassiz, 1839 and D. crassispinus Agassiz, 1839 are redescribed in detail and recognized as lutjanids rather than sparids, with the new species combinations Ottaviania leptacanthus n. comb. and Goujetia crassispina n. comb. respectively. Dentex ventralis Agassiz, 1839 is regarded as a nomen dubium. Serranus ventralis Agassiz, 1839, previously thought to be a synonym of Sparnodus elongatus, is described as the lutjanid Veranichthys ventralis n. comb.; the species name Serranus rugosus Heckel, 1854, usually regarded as valid, is actually its junior synonym. Thus, the genus Serranus is absent in the Bolca fauna. The family Lutjanidae is represented in the Bolca fish assemblage by at least four species in three genera (Ottaviania Sorbini, 1983, Goujetia n. gen. and Veranichthys n. gen.). It is shown that the "haemulid" Pomadasys furcatus (Agassiz, 1839) is actually a synonym of Sparnodus elongatus Agassiz, 1839, and that haemulids are absent from the Eocene fauna of Bolca. Odonteobolca sparoides (Agassiz, 1839) is probably a synonym of the "sparid" Pseudosparnodus microstomus (Agassiz, 1839). If it can be confirmed, the generic name Odonteobolca Krell, 1991 will have priority over the name Pseudosparnodus Day, 2003.

TL;DR: The status of the species is revalidated and the new combination Scinax camposseabrai is established.
Abstract: Hyla camposseabrai Bokermann, 1968, was described based on specimens obtained at Maracas, State of Bahia, Brazil. It was subsequently considered as a subspecies of Hyla x-signata Spix, 1824, and currently it has been considered a synonym of Scinax x-signatus (Spix, 1824). In this paper, the status of the species is revalidated and the new combination Scinax camposseabrai is established.

TL;DR: The results indicate that only two distinct mountain frog species inhabit Anatolia, and recommend that R. camerani from Mt Erciyes should be recognized as a synonym of R. macrocnemis.
Abstract: Three currently recognized species of Anatolian mountain frogs were analyzed for species boundaries. Meristic and proportional measurement data of three populations, including two topotypical ones, were evaluated using both univariate and discriminant analyses, and blood-serum samples were analyzed electrophoretically with polyacrylamide-disc electrophoresis. The results indicate that only two distinct mountain frog species inhabit Anatolia. We recommend that R. camerani from Mt Erciyes should be recognized as a synonym of R. macrocnemis.

TL;DR: The Scandinavian trilobites described in the classical papers by Moberg and Moller as discussed by the authors were reviewed, based on the original type collections, and lectotypes were selected for Parabolina (Parabolina) acanthura (Angelin), Acerocare ecorne Angelin and Westergaardia lata (Matthew).
Abstract: The Scandinavian trilobites described in the classical papers by Moberg and Moller (1898) and Moberg (1898) are reviewed, based on the original type collections. The ten species and subspecies originally described are here considered to represent 12 species and subspecies, ranging in age from the latest Furongian (late Cambrian) through the Tremadocian (Early Ordovician). Lectotypes are selected for Parabolina (Parabolina) acanthura (Angelin), Acerocare ecorne Angelin and Westergaardia lata (Matthew). Leptoplastus claudicans (Moberg and Moller) is regarded as a junior subjective synonym of L. stenotus Angelin. These, and lectotypes formerly only figured by hand-drawings, are illustrated by high-resolution photographs.

TL;DR: The small size, partially bistratose leaf lamina and the upper laminal cells with tall, forked papillae are distinctive features for this species of Zygodon from Spain in the Iberian Peninsula.
Abstract: Zygodon bistratus, a new species from Spain in the Iberian Peninsula is described. The small size, partially bistratose leaf lamina and the upper laminal cells with tall, forked papillae are distinctive features for this species. While examining material of Iberian Peninsula Zygodon for the taxonomic treatment of the genus in this area, some distinctive specimens with bistratose leaves were found. Most of them had been named Zygodon rupestris Schimp. ex Lorentz, while others were identified as Z. baumgartneri Malta (a synonym of Z. rupestris, cf. Karttunen 1984). However, they show a combination of characters not found in any other Zygodon, and therefore are here described as a new species.

TL;DR: A comparison between the male genitalia of C. longicornis and those of other Chirocephalus species, as well as Artemiopsis, demonstrates that the genus Parartemiopsis Rogers, 2005 is still valid.
Abstract: Parartemiopsis mongolica Rogers, 2005 was described on the basis of two male specimens from Mongolia. Subsequent to publication, it was demonstrated that this taxon had previously been described as Chirocephalus longicornis (Smirnov, 1930). However, a comparison between the male genitalia of C. longicornis and those of other Chirocephalus species, as well as Artemiopsis, demonstrates that the genus Parartemiopsis Rogers, 2005 is still valid. Therefore, the correct name for this taxon is Parartemiopsis longicornis (Smirnov, 1930).

Abstract: The larva of Enemothrombium bifoliosum (Canestrini, 1884) is described for the first time. Postlarval instars are redescribed and the neotype is designated. Diagnoses of adults, deutonymphs and larvae for Enemothrombium Berlese, 1910 and Valgothrombium Willmann, 1940 are provided. Parafeiderium culicoidiumVercammen-Grandjean et Cochrane, 1974 is transferred to Enemothrombium. Parafeiderium stuarti Baker, 1999 is transferred to Valgothrombium. Parafeiderium Vercammen-Grandjean et Cochrane, 1974 is considered a junior synonym of Enemothrombium Berlese, 1910. Lacinitrombium Southcott, 1994 and Furcotrombium Southcott, 1994 are synonymized with Valgothrombium. As a result, four new combinations arose: Enemothrombium culicoidium (Vercammen-Grandjean et Cochrane, 1974), comb. nov., Valgothrombium fluminis (Michener, 1946), comb. nov., Valgothrombium spasiscutum (Robaux, 1974), comb. nov. and Valgothrombium stuarti (Baker, 1999), comb. nov. Data about phenology, life cycle, development and parasitism of E. bifoliosum are reported. The phylogenetic position of Enemothrombium within Microtrombidiidae is discussed.

Abstract: Leiognathus longispinis (Valenciennes, in Cuvier and Valenciennes, 1835) is shown to be a senior synonym of Leiognathus smithursti (Ramsay and Ogilby, 1886) Many leiognathid species were described without a broad comparison to existing species, which has contributed to nomenclatural problems Although the holotypes of both L longispinis and L smithursti were collected in New Guinea, the authors of the latter name were evidently unaware of the earlier named species, which is shown herein to be morphologically indistinct from L smithursti

TL;DR: Chaunacops, type species Chaunax coloratus Garman by monotypy, must be regarded as valid and Bathychaunax set aside as a junior synonym.
Abstract: Chaunacops Garman, 1899, is shown to be a senior synonym of the chaunacid anglerfish genus Bathychaunax Caruso, 1989. While Chaunacops has not been used as valid since its erection in 1899, conditions do not exist to allow ‘‘reversal of precedence,’’ as provided by Article 23.9.1. of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. Thus, Chaunacops, type species Chaunax coloratus Garman by monotypy, must be regarded as valid and Bathychaunax set aside as a junior synonym.

TL;DR: The analysis of the description of Synallaxis cinereus reveals that Wied was merely providing a new name for Parulus ruficeps Spix, 1824, to avoid problems of homonymy (Wied 1831), and the correct name for the Bahia Spinetail issynallaxis whitneyi Pacheco and Gonzaga, 1995.
Abstract: Synallaxis whitneyi Pacheco and Gonzaga, 1995, was described from specimens collected in Bahia, Brazil. Some years later, following analysis of the specimens used by Wied (1831) to describe Synallaxis cinereus, Whitney and Pacheco (2001) considered S. whitneyi a junior synonym of S. cinereus because three of the specimens in Wied’s series were identical to those collected in Bahia by Pacheco and Gonzaga (1995). They also designated a lectotype for Synallaxis cinereus. Our analysis of the description of Synallaxis cinereus reveals that Wied was merely providing a new name for Parulus ruficeps Spix, 1824, to avoid problems of homonymy (Wied 1831). The International Code of Zoological Nomenclature is explicit in such cases, stating that if an author proposes a new species-group name as a replacement (nomen novum) for an earlier available one, then the two names are objective synonyms and have the same name-bearing type. Thus, the syntypes of S. cinereus are the specimens previously used by Spix in describing Parulus ruficeps and not those used by Wied (1831) in his description (and subsequently referred to as syntypes in the literature). The lectotype of Synallaxis cinereus proposed by Whitney and Pacheco (2001) is invalid, as it is not a former syntype. Therefore, the correct name for the Bahia Spinetail is Synallaxis whitneyi Pacheco and Gonzaga, 1995.

TL;DR: The genus Hydnoplicata and its type species, H. whitei, were described by Gilkey in 1954 as mentioned in this paper, and they proved to be a later, taxonomic synonym ofHydnocystis convoluta.
Abstract: The genus Hydnoplicata and its type species, H. whitei, were described by Gilkey in 1954. Having discovered that it has amyloid asci and other characters that relate it to the genus Peziza, Trappe later proposed the new combination, Peziza whitei, even though the species is consistently hypogeous. Recent molecular phylogenetic studies ofPeziza, however, indicate that Peziza sensu lato is strongly non-monophyletic. Hydnoplicata is in a clade distinctly separate from the type clade ofPeziza, so the name Hydnoplicata can be restored to represent that clade. Because H. whitei proved to be a later, taxonomic synonym ofHydnocystis convoluta, however, the correct name for the species is Hydnoplicata convoluta (Gilkey) Trappe and Claridge, comb. nov.

Abstract: The genus Pappus (revised status), with P. sordidus Distant as the type species, is resurrected from synonymy under the orthotyline genus Ceratocapsus Reuter, redescribed, transferred to the subfamily Mirinae, tribe Mirini, and shown to be the senior synonym of Platylygus Van Duzee, new synonymy. As a result, the 31 species previously placed in Platylygus represent new combinations in the genus Pappus. Pappus breviceps Osborn and Drake is transferred from the subfamily Orthotylinae, tribe Ceratocapsini, in the genus Ceratocapsus Reuter to the subfamily Mirinae, nominate tribe Mirini, as a member of the genus Tropidosteptes Uhler and as a junior synonym of T. fasciatus (Distant), new synonymy. Pappus egens Distant and P. insignis Distant are tentatively retained in the genus Ceratocapsus (Orthotylinae: Ceratocapsini), pending further study; Pappus sordidus and Tropidosteptes fasciatus are redescribed; and a dorsal photograph for each of the four species is provided.

Abstract: Nephila ?hirta Taczanowski 1873 was described from French Guiana, but is currently listed under Nephilengys L. Koch. It is here redescribed and transferred from Nephilinae (Tetragnathidae)* to the araneid genus Eustala Simon, and proposed as a junior synonym of E. fuscovittata (Keyserling 1864). Eustala appears to be the most speciose American araneid genus and is in need of revision.

TL;DR: A new species is described from Sicily that is characterised by an unusual intermingling of characters deemed to be diagnostic for C. vaccinii and C. ligula, and shows also some exclusive features.
Abstract: Conistra iana sp. n. is described from Sicily. The new species is characterised by an unusual intermingling of characters deemed to be diagnostic for C. vaccinii (Linnaeus, 1761) and C. ligula (Esper, 1791), and shows also some exclusive features. An overall survey of closest congeners revealed that all checked females of "C. ligula" from the south-east Mediterranean are devoid of signum and sparse "C. alicia" from southern Spain and Morocco show markedly dilated postero-lateral processes of antrum, both fi ndings calling for further research on these nominal taxa inasmuch additional entities might be hidden. Orrhodia vaccinii nigra A. Bang-Haas, 1907 is shown to be a senior synonym for Conistra (Orrhodia) alicia Lajonquiere, 1939 syn. n. and declared as nomen oblitum in favour of the younger name as nomen protectum.
