TL;DR: A mass flow sensor comprising a Karman flow detector in a fluid passage including a vortex generator and a vortex detector for detecting periods of generated vortices, and an air density detector including a reference pressure chamber enclosing a standard gas and a comparison pressure chamber into which a fluid in the passage is introduced and detecting means whose output varies proportionally to pressures and temperatures of the fluid introduced in the comparison pressure chambers, thereby compensating a volume flow obtained from the flow detector as discussed by the authors.

TL;DR: In this paper, an air flow measurement apparatus is proposed for measuring the air quantity aspirated by internal combustion engines, which has at least one temperature-dependent resistor disposed in the air flow, whose temperature and/or resistance is controlled in accordance with the flow rate to provide a controller output as a gauge for the quantity of the medium.
Abstract: An air flow measurement apparatus is proposed for measuring the air quantity aspirated by internal combustion engines, which has at least one temperature-dependent resistor disposed in the air flow, whose temperature and/or resistance is controlled in accordance with the flow rate to provide a controller output as a gauge for the quantity of the medium. The apparatus includes a flow restriction, which is preferably formed in plate-like configuration with a wedge-shaped cross section and the narraw tip facing into the air flow and is disposed in the flow downstream of the temperature-dependent resistor in such a manner that in the event of a flow reversal, such as during backfiring in the intake manifold of an internal combustion engine, the flow restriction reduces the flow velocity in the vicinity of the temperature-dependent resistor.

TL;DR: An ionization flow meter which can determine with high accuracy the flow of a gas expressed as a gas velocity, volume flow, or mass flow and substantially independently of pressure, temperature and, as the case may be, moisture content is presented in this paper.
Abstract: An ionization flow meter which can determine with high accuracy the flow of a gas expressed as a gas velocity, volume flow, or mass flow and substantially independently of pressure, temperature and, as the case may be, moisture content. By applying the theory of corona discharges, data relating to the flow-determining factors such as ion mobility and gas density can be derived from the known measured voltage and current values using electronic means. For example, the slope S of the I-V characteristic curve can be determined from the measured values of voltage V and current I.

TL;DR: In this paper, a Coriolis mass flow meter was used to determine the feasibility of using it to meter the multi-phase flow of pulverized coal-transport gas mixtures.
Abstract: An investigation of a new Coriolis mass flow meter was carried out to determine the feasibility of using it to meter the multi-phase flow of pulverized coal-transport gas mixtures. The Coriolis meter accurately measured dense phase coal flows on a continuous basis, producing an output which was a linear function of the coal flow. In less dense flows the meter monitored flow fluctuations and slugging, but when slugging became substantial the meter behaved erratically. Because the meter indicates flow fluctuation and slugging, it promises to be a valuable instrument for evaluating new coal delivery systems as well as for monitoring and adjusting flow in established systems.
