Abstract: A wireless communication system and method for employing underground or low profile surface deployed current drivers for inducing ground currents in the earth which define loop antennas for sending and receiving electromagnetic signals propagated through the atmosphere over a wide bandwidth The system uses a current driver whose impedance is adjusted so that it matches the impedance of a transmitter/receiver connected thereto The current driver is capacitively coupled to the surrounding ground so that the current driver and the earth effectively function together as a vertical plane polarized antenna which propagates a vertically polarized electromagnetic signal The system can be operated using either a single current driver or, where increased signal gain is desired, using an array of current drivers that are spaced in parallel A undirectional vertically polarized signal may be produced by shortening the length of one current driver conductor with respect to the other arm Unwanted cancellation currents may be substantially eliminated from the region surrounding the current driver by positioning low conductivity materials so as to extend into the flow paths of the cancellation currents

TL;DR: This suggestion is found to provide a quantitative explanation of Ogle's ‘induced effect’ and suggest that vertical disparities may play an important role in the binocular perception of absolute depth.
Abstract: It is shown how the full three-dimensional structure of a scene may in principle be computed from a correlated pair of retinal images, when all that is known about the orientations of the two eyes is that the planes of their horizontal meridians accurately coincide. The vertical dimension plays a crucial role in the theory; visible points which lie on the horizontal meridian supply no information about the angle of convergence or the direction of gaze.(i) If the scene contains three or more nonmeridional points, not all lying in a vertical plane, then their positions in space are fully determined by the horizontal and vertical coordinates of their images on the two retinas.(ii) If just two nonmeridional points are visible, or more than two, lying in a vertical plane, then their retinal images admit, in general, just two distinct three-dimensional interpretations. One of these is usually unrealistic; but a choice between them may be perceptually difficult if the vertical plane containing the points is near...

TL;DR: In this paper, an elevated and elongated boom is centrally pivoted for rocking movement in a vertical plane through the horizontal plane, and a pair of free wings are mounted on the fore and aft ends of the boom with control panels being oscullatably mounted on such wings for determining by their relative positions and aerodynamic equilibrium reaction to the angle of attack of such wings.
Abstract: An elevated and elongated boom is centrally pivoted for rocking movement in a vertical plane through the horizontal plane. Provision is made to align such plane with the direction of the wind. A pair of free wings are mounted on the fore and aft ends of the boom with control panels being oscullatably mounted on such wings for determining by their relative positions and aerodynamic equilibrium reaction thereto the angle of attack of such wings. Provision is made to control the relative positions of the control panels with respect to their respective wings so that the wings have angles of attack of opposite sense, with such senses being reversed as the boom approaches each predetermined limit of its rocking motion. Each wing and its control panel are preferably comprised of independent right and left sections that drive the vertical plane of the boom as a plane of symmetry, with the right and left control panels being controlled so the lift, upward or downward, contributions by the associated right and left wing sections to the boom are balanced. The fore (canard) and aft wings are positioned and sized relative to each other to equalize their moment contributions to the rocking motion of the boom. Alternative wing structures are disclosed with one construction involving the fore and aft wings being respectively forwardly and rearwardly swept in which case the need for independent right and left wing sections is deemed to be reduced. One wind construction involves stacked or vertical arrays of two or more wings at both the fore and aft ends of the boom. One embodiment, in distinction to the others, involves the control panels leading rather than trailing their respective panels in which event the direction of their control adjustment to effect a desired angle of attack is reversed. The rocking motion is applied to drive, by a wind velocity controlled stroke, a double-acting hydraulic pump disposed adjacent the pivot which may be coupled by depending hydraulic lines to additional energy transducers disposed on the ground of any desired type, e.g., hydraulic to electric, hydraulic to fluid flow in pipe lines, etc.

Abstract: In order to realize a device for the deflection of a continuous film web folded in its axial midline in a packaging machine for wrapping a number of sequentially fed objects in which the two film web halves, making flat contact with each other, are fed in a vertical plane located parallel to the feed direction of the objects and are separated in a roof-like manner along a ridge edge extending parallel to the feed direction--and in order to obtain an adaptation to objects of different size vertical to the feed plane on the edges of a guide extending parallel to the feed direction, it is proposed that the guide comprise two guide rails parallel to the feed direction which are inserted opposite to the feed direction into the space between the two roof areas and the top layer and which by their free ends define the lower corners of the triangular area, and that the spacing of the guide rails as well as the vertical distance between the guide elements defining the ridge edge and the guide rails are adjustable.

Abstract: Three radio location stations on the ground provide position reference signals for a helicopter. A barometer provides crude altitude information while a radar altimeter provides precise data for a CPU to ensure non ambiguous height data. The information is synchronised by a digital clock. A video camera carried on the helicopter is position controlled to point vertically towards the ground to a point given by the navigation system. A video spot on the monitor screen enables the pilot to observe the position in a vertical plane as well as direction and altitude. Alternatively, the radar probe altimeter can be replaced by a laser system.

TL;DR: In this paper, a sound source is positioned within the geometrical center of a ring having a diameter and height of 1 wavelength and 1/2 wavelength respectively, and sound energy radiates to the ring and is re-radiated or diffracted at the top and bottom thereof.
Abstract: Directivity of a sound source is significantly increased when the source is positioned within the geometrical center of a ring having a diameter and height of 1 wavelength and 1/2 wavelength respectively. Sound energy radiates to the ring and is re-radiated or diffracted at the top and bottom thereof. The re-radiated or diffracted sound energy thus appears to be generated by two simple sources, in phase and vertically arranged, one source being at the top of the ring and the other at its bottom, resulting in increased intensity along the horizontal plane bisecting the sources. The two phased sources at the top and bottom of the ring may be considered to be located along any imaginary vertical plane through the single source. Sound intensity in a desired plane or direction is thus increased without a concomitant increase in power, number of sources or components.

Abstract: In this paper, we investigate the effect of higher modes on the scattering of plane, harmonic Love waves, normally incident (from either side) upon the plane of discontinuity in the horizontally discontinuous structure consisting of welded layered quarter-spaces with a plane surface. We find that the effect of the higher modes on the scattering of an incident fundamental mode from hard into the soft medium is considerable for large impedance contrasts with or without body-wave conversion, and is negligible when the impedance contrast is low. Our results indicate that contributions from body-wave conversion are important in higher Love mode studies when there is large contrast in the elastic constants of the media on the two sides of the vertical plane of discontinuity.
