Metasurfaces: From microwaves to visible

This paper gives a basic review and a summary of recent developments for leaky-wave antennas (LWAs). An LWA uses a guiding structure that supports wave propagation along the length of the structure, with the wave radiating or “leaking” continuously along the structure. Such antennas may be uniform, quasi-uniform, or periodic. After reviewing the basic physics and operating principles, a summary of some recent advances for these types of structures is given. Recent advances include structures that can scan to endfire, structures that can scan through broadside, structures that are conformal to surfaces, and structures that incorporate power recycling or include active elements. Some of these novel structures are inspired by recent advances in the metamaterials area.

Leaky‐Wave Antennas

Resonance conditions for a substrate-superstrate printed antenna geometry which allow for large antenna gain are presented. Asymptotic formulas for gain, beamwidth, and bandwidth are given, and the bandwidth limitation of the method is discussed. The method is extended to produce narrow patterns about the horizon, and directive patterns at two different angles.

Gain enhancement methods for printed circuit antennas

A Fabry–Perot cavity (FPC) between a ground plane and a partially reflective surface (PRS) is used here to design array antennas with large distance between the radiating elements. This configuration provides some advantages: i) a reduction of the number of array elements to achieve high directivity; ii) large space between contiguous elements that may host a bulky feeding network as required for dual polarization or active antennas; iii) small coupling and easy feeding network designs because of the smaller number of elements with larger inter-element distance. We show that when designing the FPC antenna a frequency shift of the gain maximum may occur, especially in this sparse array configuration. We also show the existence of preferred distances between elements that controls both the directivity and the side lobe level, and how the presence of the FPC and the relaxed requirement of the interelement distance result in a lower interelement coupling. The presented dual polarized antenna comprises two interleaved 2 x 2 arrays placed in a 2-layer FPC, and exhibits a 19 dBi gain and 30 dB of isolation between the two ports over an operating bandwidth of approximately 5.7%, i.e., typical for patch antennas.

Array thinning by using antennas in a Fabry-Perot cavity for gain enhancement

Previous work has demonstrated that very narrow beam radiation patterns can be obtained from a simple source embedded within multiple dielectric layers of appropriate thicknesses above a ground plane. The configuration consists of dielectric layers having permittivities epsilon /sub 1/ and epsilon /sub 2/ stacked in an alternating arrangement, with epsilon /sub 2/> epsilon /sub 1/. This narrow-beam effect can be attributed to weakly attenuated leaky waves that exist on the structure. Simple asymptotic formulas for the propagation and attenuation constants are derived. The formulas show how the beamwidth varies with the number of layers and the material constants. The exact radiation pattern is compared with the leaky-wave pattern for a specific case to demonstrate the role of the leaky waves in determining the total pattern. >

Leaky-wave propagation and radiation for a narrow-beam multiple-layer dielectric structure

Formulas are derived for the far-infrared radiation pattern of cylindrical leaky waves propagating on a planar surface. The formulas can be used to predict the radiation pattern of a general class of leaky-wave antennas, consisting of a finite-size source which excites a radially propagating leaky wave on some planar surface. Leaky-wave antennas consisting of antenna elements embedded in dielectric layers (microstrip elements) fall into this category. Using the equivalence principle, formulas are derived for both transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) leaky waves with arbitrary propagation constants. The formulas allow for radiation from cylindrical apertures of arbitrary size, so that the effect of truncating the supporting planar surface with an absorbing material can be determined. Particular attention is devoted to the case of a leaky wave for which the real and imaginary parts of the complex propagation constant are equal, since this type of wave has been shown to be responsible for broadside radiation in certain leaky-wave antennas comprised of dielectric layers. >

Radiation from cylindrical leaky waves

A method is given for calculating the radiation pattern of a finite-size cylindrical leaky-wave antenna structure consisting of a single source near a planar surface that supports leaky-wave propagation. The method accounts for the finite radius of the planar surface by subtracting the radiation from that part of the leaky wave that lies beyond the physical surface, from the exact radiation pattern corresponding to an infinite planar surface. Experimental results obtained for a leaky-wave structure consisting of multiple dielectric layers above a ground plane confirm the improved accuracy of the method, particularly for the part of the radiation pattern away from the peak. >
