Journal ArticleDOI
Spatially modulated structural colour in bird feathers.
Andrew J. Parnell,A. L. Washington,Oleksandr O. Mykhaylyk,Christopher J. Hill,Antonino Bianco,Stephanie L. Burg,Andrew J. C. Dennison,Mary Snape,Ashley J. Cadby,Andrew J. Smith,Sylvain Prévost,D. M. Whittaker,Richard A. L. Jones,J. Patrick A. Fairclough,Andrew R. Parker +14 more
TL;DR: The analysis shows that nanostructure in single bird feather barbs can be varied continuously by controlling the time the keratin network is allowed to phase separate before mobility in the system is arrested, implying the phase separation arrest mechanism is rapid and also distinct from the spinodal phase separation mechanism.

Journal ArticleDOI
Wing scale ultrastructure underlying convergent and divergent iridescent colours in mimetic Heliconius butterflies
Andrew J. Parnell,James E. Bradford,Emma V. Curran,A. L. Washington,Gracie Adams,Melanie N. Brien,Stephanie L. Burg,Carlos Morochz,J. Patrick A. Fairclough,Peter Vukusic,Simon J. Martin,Scott Doak,Nicola J. Nadeau +12 more
TL;DR: It is found that iridescent structural colour is not closely matched between co-mimetic species, and differences appear less pronounced in models of Heliconius vision than models of avian vision, suggesting that they are not driven by selection to avoid heterospecific courtship by co- mimics.
Journal ArticleDOI
Porosity of silica Stöber particles determined by spin-echo small angle neutron scattering
S. R. Parnell,S. R. Parnell,A. L. Washington,Andrew J. Parnell,A. Walsh,Robert M. Dalgliesh,Fankang Li,William A. Hamilton,Sylvain Prévost,John Patrick Anthony Fairclough,Roger Pynn,Roger Pynn +11 more
TL;DR: In this paper, spin-echo small angle neutron scattering (SESANS) was used in conjunction with USAXS and pycnometry to study an aqueous dispersion of Stober particles.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ligand Shell Structure in Lead Sulfide–Oleic Acid Colloidal Quantum Dots Revealed by Small-Angle Scattering
Michael P. Weir,Daniel T. W. Toolan,Rachel C. Kilbride,Nicholas J. W. Penfold,A. L. Washington,Stephen M. King,James Xiao,Zhilong Zhang,Victor Gray,Simon Dowland,Jurjen F. Winkel,Neil C. Greenham,Richard H. Friend,Akshay Rao,Anthony J. Ryan,Richard A. L. Jones +15 more
TL;DR: This work describes a method for quantitative measurement of the ligand layer in 3 nm diameter lead sulfide–oleic acid quantum dots and finds greater-than-monolayer coverage of oleic acid and a significant proportion of ligand remaining in solution.
