Mechanics of aerosols in nuclear reactor safety: A review

Experimental data on solubility, heat and kinetics of dissolution, diffusion and standard potentials of metals in mercury as well as the rate of the electrode process with an amalgam formation, have been collected and selected. A comparison has been made between the measured and predicted solubilities and heats of dissolution. The experimental diffusion coefficients have been analysed according to the simple Sutherland-Einstein equation; the average composition of diffusing particles in diluted amalgams have been estimated. The linear dependence between the logarithm of the rate constant of aquo-ion electroreduction on mercury and the metal solubility in mercury has been confirmed. No correlation of the dissolution rate of metals in mercury has been found.

Review Selected properties of simple amalgams

Recently a novel approach to the photocatalytic reduction of molecular nitrogen under ambient conditions was reported in which hydrated electrons generated from ultraviolet illumination of diamond served as the reducing agent [Zhu, D.; Zhang, L.; Ruther, R. E.; Hamers, R. J. Photo-Illuminated Diamond as a Solid-State Source of Solvated Electrons in Water for Nitrogen Reduction. Nat. Mater. 2013, 12, 836-841]. This surprising reduction of N2 by aqueous solvated electrons is absent from the vast existing radiolysis literature and thus has little mechanistic precedent. In this work, a combination of experimental and computational approaches is used to elucidate the detailed molecular-level mechanistic pathway from nitrogen to ammonia. A variety of approaches, including electronic structure calculations, molecular dynamics simulations, kinetic modeling, and pH-dependent experimental measures of NH3 and competing H2 production, implicate a hydrogen atom addition mechanism at early reduction steps and sequential protonation/direct reduction by a solvated electron at later steps, thus involving both direct and indirect reactions with solvated electrons. This work provides a framework for understanding the possible application of solvated electrons as energetic reducing agents for chemically inert species under mild conditions.

Mechanism of N2 reduction to NH3 by aqueous solvated electrons.

Molecular dynamic calculations of the velocity autocorrelation functions and self-diffusion coefficients in two-component liquid mixtures consisting of the argon isotope of mass 40 and, in order to obtain a clear isotope effect, fictitious argon isotopes of one of the masses 32, 80 and 200 have been made. A perturbation theory, in principle being an expansion in powers of the mass difference of the two isotopes in the mixtures, has been developed and used for the analysis of the results for the velocity autocorrelation functions, permitting also the calculation of isotope effects for the mass differences occurring in mixtures of real isotopes. The connection between the mutual and self-diffusion coefficients and the relation of the results to binary collision and hydrodynamic theory has been briefly considered.

The Importance of Gravitational Coagulation on the Settling of High-Mass Density Aerosols

An investigation of the effects of mass on diffusion in liquids was undertaken and the results are presented herein. The diffusion of gold and silver in liquid mercury was measured over the temperature range -33.0 to 136.0 \ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}C at solute (mole fraction) concentrations \ensuremath{\le} 4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\ensuremath{-}7}$, where solute-solute interactions are negligible. These systems were chosen for a study of the mass effect in the liquid state because all other properties likely to influence the diffusivity values are essentially identical, and both closely fulfill the requirements of simple liquids. The data, which were obtained using both the well-known capillary-reservoir technique and a new modification of the diaphragm-cell method, can be expressed in the conventional form $D=1.11\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{e}^{\frac{\ensuremath{-}1360}{\mathrm{RT}}}$ and $D=0.96\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{e}^{\frac{\ensuremath{-}1309}{\mathrm{RT}}}$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$/sec for the Ag-Hg and Au-Hg systems, respectively. Contrary to the predictions of most current theories of transport properties of liquids, the diffusivities were found to be independent of the mass of the solute. The probable reasons for the lack of a mass dependence are discussed.
