TL;DR: In this article, a series of sensitivity tests were performed with a z-coordinate, global eddy-permitting (1/4°) ocean/sea-ice model (the ORCA-R025 model configuration developed for the DRAKKAR project) to evaluate the impact of recent state-of-the-art numerical schemes on model solutions.
Journal ArticleDOI
A numerical model of the Weddell Sea: Large scale circulation and water mass distribution
TL;DR: A circumpolar model for regional studies of the wind-driven and thermohaline circulation of the Southern Ocean including the major sub-ice shelf areas is described in this paper, where the trajectories of Lagrangian floats are used to determine the pathways and timescales of water mass spreading in the model.
Journal ArticleDOI
Towards a model of cyanobacteria life cycle—effects of growing and resting stages on bloom formation of N2-fixing species
TL;DR: This study indicates that prediction of cyanobacteria blooms has to be based on a detailed knowledge of all stages of the life cycle, and shows that life cycle simulations are feasible and can be used to test hypotheses and to determine sensitivities regarding the role of Cyanobacteria life cycles in marine and limnic environments.
The role of sea ice in the fresh water budget of the Weddell Sea
TL;DR: A coupled sea ice-ocean model of the Weddell Sea has been developed as part of the BRIOS (Bremerhaven Regional Ice-Ocean Simulations) project as mentioned in this paper.
Journal ArticleDOI
Torn between extremes: the ups and downs of phytoplankton
TL;DR: In this article, the success and resulting patterns of phytoplankton migration are investigated based on motility which depends exclusively on the internal energy and nutrient state of the cells.
