Cave environments are characterized by pos- sessing specialized fauna living in high environmental stability with limited food conditions These fauna are highly vulnerable to impacts, because this condition can frequently be easily altered Moreover, environmental determinants of the biodiversity patterns of caves remain poorly understood and protected Therefore, the main goal of this work is to propose a cave conservation priority index (CCPi) for a rapid assessment for troglobiotic and troglophile protection Furthermore, the troglobiotic diversity, distribution and threats have been mapped in the Brazilian Atlantic forest To propose the CCPi, the human impacts and richness of troglobiotic and troglophile species of 100 caves were associated Data related to troglo- morphic/troglobiotic fauna from another 200 caves were used to map the troglobiotic diversity and distribution The CCPi reveals extremely high conservation priority for 15 % of the caves, high for 36 % and average for 46 % of the caves Fourteen caves with extremely high priorities should have urgent conservation and management actions The geographical distribution of the 221 known troglo- biotic/troglomorphic species allowed us to select 19 karst areas that need conservation actions Seven areas were considered to have urgent priority for conservation actions The two richest areas correspond to the ''iron quadrangle'' with iron ore caves (67 spp) and the ''Acungui limestone group'' (56 spp) Both areas have several caves and are important aquifers The use of the CCPi can prevent future losses because it helps assessors to select caves with pri- orities for conservation which should receive emergency attention in relation to protection, management and con- servation actions

Cave Conservation Priority Index to Adopt a Rapid Protection Strategy: A Case Study in Brazilian Atlantic Rain Forest

We present in the following an Errata Corrigenda for Abrantes et al. (2010) Table 2 and general counting. Furthermore, we include all additional records for Brazilian Collembola during 2010 and 2011 as an update for the species list. The update was made following the same methodology and criteria as Culik and Zeppelini (2003), and Abrantes et al. (2010). All data will fit the same table marked differently to be recognized at glance. The references presented here are restricted to the citations concerning the update only; therefore the references presented in Culik and Zeppelini (2003), and Abrantes et al. (2010) will not be repeated.

Understanding the abundance and richness of species is one of the most fundamental steps in effecting their conservation. Despite global recognition of the significance of the below-ground component of diversity for ecosystem functioning, the soil remains a poorly studied terrestrial ecosystem. In South Africa, knowledge is increasing for a variety of soil faunal groups, but many still remain poorly understood. We have started to address this gap in the knowledge of South African soil biodiversity by focusing on the Collembola in an integrated project that encompasses systematics, barcoding and ecological assessments. Here we provide an updated list of the Collembola species from South Africa. A total of 124 species from 61 genera and 17 families has been recorded, of which 75 are considered endemic, 24 widespread, and 25 introduced. This total number of species excludes the 36 species we consider to be dubious. From the published data, Collembola species richness is high compared to other African countries, but low compared to European countries. This is largely a consequence of poor sampling in the African region, as our discovery of many new species in South Africa demonstrates. Our analyses also show that much ongoing work will be required before a reasonably comprehensive and spatially explicit picture of South Africa’s springtail fauna can be provided, which may well exceed 1000 species. Such work will be necessary to help South Africa meet its commitments to biodiversity conservation, especially in the context of the 2020 Aichi targets of the Convention on Biological Diversity.

Hexapods, commonly known as insects, are a neglected taxonomic group in the Fernando de Noronha archipelago, with unanswered questions about their species richness and the ecological processes in which they are involved (e.g., colonization, introduction, establishment, and extinction). Herein, we provide an updated Hexapod checklist with current nomenclatural combinations. The entomofauna of the Fernando de Noronha archipelago is currently composed of 453 species in 21 orders. The orders, and their respective number of species, are: Blattaria (9), Coleoptera (118), Collembola (29), Dermaptera (3), Diplura (1), Diptera (134), Embioptera (1), Hemiptera (29), Hymenoptera (59), Isoptera (2), Lepidoptera (25), Mantodea (1), Neuroptera (3), Odonata (5), Orthoptera (11), Phasmatodea (1), Phthiraptera (6), Psocoptera (3), Siphonaptera (1), Thysanoptera (10), and Zygentoma (2). The archipelago has 263 new taxon records (family + genera + species). Thirty-eight species (3.39%) were described from local specimens and most of them are likely endemic species. This study more than doubles our knowledge (from the previous 190 records) of the entomofauna in this large Brazilian archipelago. This study also provides a baseline for studies on its conservation status and for implementing future environmental management programs.

Insect (Hexapoda) diversity in the oceanic archipelago of Fernando de Noronha, Brazil: updated taxonomic checklist and new records

The current total number of species found in Brazil is 270, distributed in 19 families and 92 genera, an increase of 71 species and 12 genera in the last 6 years. The greatest known diversity is found in Rio de Janeiro (132 species), Amazonas (56), Espirito Santo (30) and Sao Paulo (28), while there are no record to seven Brazilian states (Acre, Alagoas, Distrito Federal, Goias, Rio Grande do Norte, Roraima and Tocantins). Distribution of the records clearly defines the areas that urge investments in scientific research and taxonomic survey and reflects the concentration of information in those centers that host the few specialists in Collembola, currently working in Brazil.

Synthesis of Brazilian Collembola: an update to the species list

A list of 129 springtail species recorded in the Rio de Janeiro State, among with its localities and environments, is presented. The elaboration of this list, based on the examination of the Museu Nacional/UFRJ Collembola Collection and the revision of the specialized bibliography, it is part of a larger project that aim the inventory from the Rio de Janeiro Atlantic Rainforest insects.

Fauna colembologica do estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil

Starting from an understanding of disasters as procedural and socio-historical phenomena, which trigger and are caused by multiple factors, this article will present a synthesis about the formation process and the struggles carried out by three movements in three different cities in the state of Rio de Janeiro that are crossed by different types of disasters or by speeches of “risks” of disasters. The methodology adopted in the elaboration of this article was based on the literature review on the theme and on the systematization of the reports that the representatives of these Movements and also authors of this text made at the II International Seminar on Risks and Disasters, in 2019, intending to show the ways through which disaster processes materialize in different spaces, in addition to giving visibility to the struggles of these movements, which are in the Serrana and Norte Fluminense region.  The narratives reinforce the construction and permanence of disasters - in space and time - and unveil the actions and omissions practiced by different agents that end up promoting such processes.
