Interleukin-22 mediates early host defense against attaching and effacing bacterial pathogens
Yan Zheng,Patricia Valdez,Dimitry M. Danilenko,Yan Hu,Susan M Sa,Qian Gong,Alexander R. Abbas,Zora Modrusan,Nico Ghilardi,Frederic J. de Sauvage,Wenjun Ouyang +10 more
TL;DR: This work shows that interleukin-22 (IL-22) has a crucial role in the early phase of host defense against C. rodentium and identifies a new innate immune function for IL-22 in regulating early defense mechanisms against A/E bacterial pathogens.
Journal ArticleDOI
T-helper Type 2–driven Inflammation Defines Major Subphenotypes of Asthma
Prescott G. Woodruff,Barmak Modrek,David F. Choy,Guiquan Jia,Alexander R. Abbas,Almut Ellwanger,Joseph R. Arron,Laura L. Koth,John V. Fahy +8 more
TL;DR: Asthma can be divided into at least two distinct molecular phenotypes defined by degree of Th2 inflammation, and Th2 cytokines are likely to be a relevant therapeutic target in only a subset of patients with asthma.
Journal ArticleDOI
Deconvolution of blood microarray data identifies cellular activation patterns in systemic lupus erythematosus.
TL;DR: The expansion and activation of monocytes, NK cells, and T helper cells in SLE at least partly underlie this disease's prominent interferon signature, and patterns of leukocyte dynamics uncovered here correlate with disease severity and treatment, suggest potential new treatments, and extend the understanding of lupus pathology as a complex autoimmune disease involving many arms of the immune system.
Journal ArticleDOI
Immune response in silico (IRIS): immune-specific genes identified from a compendium of microarray expression data
Alexander R. Abbas,Daryl T. Baldwin,Y Ma,Wenjun Ouyang,A. Gurney,Flavius Martin,Sherman Fong,M. van Lookeren Campagne,Paulj. Godowski,P M Williams,Andrew C. Chan,Hilary Clark +11 more
TL;DR: A compendium of microarray expression data for virtually all human genes from six key immune cell types and their activated and differentiated states, indicating that immune specificity is important at many points in the signaling pathways of the immune response.
Journal ArticleDOI
TH2 and TH17 inflammatory pathways are reciprocally regulated in asthma
David F. Choy,Kevin M. Hart,Lee A. Borthwick,Aarti Shikotra,Deepti R. Nagarkar,Salman Siddiqui,Guiquan Jia,Chandra M. Ohri,Emma Doran,Emma Doran,Kevin M. Vannella,Claire A. Butler,Beverley Hargadon,Joshua Sciurba,Richard L. Gieseck,Robert W. Thompson,Sandra White,Alexander R. Abbas,Janet Jackman,Lawren C. Wu,Jackson G. Egen,Liam G Heaney,Thirumalai R. Ramalingam,Joseph R. Arron,Thomas A. Wynn,Peter Bradding +25 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that asthma can be divided into three immunological clusters: TH2-high, TH17- high, and TH2/17- low, and the data suggest that combination therapies targeting both pathways may better treat asthmatic individuals.
