Jonathan C. Javitt,Jonathan C. Javitt,Debra A. Street,James M. Tielsch,Qin Wang,Margaret M. Kolb,Oliver D. Schein,Alfred Sommer,Marilyn Bergner,Earl P. Steinberg,Earl P. Steinberg,Gerard F. Anderson,Eric B Bass,Joseph K. Canner,Alan M. Gittelsohn,Jonathan C. Javitt,Jonathan C. Javitt,Marcia W. Legro,Neil R. Powe,O. Schein,Phoebe D. Sharkey,Donald M. Steinwachs +21 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors compared the rates of retinal detachment (RD) repair and hospitalization for endophthalmitis after extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE) in 1986 and 1987 with those following inpatient catarach extraction in 1984.
Journal ArticleDOI
Race-, age-, gender-, and refractive error-related differences in the normal optic disc.
Rohit Varma,James M. Tielsch,Harry A. Quigley,Sterling C. Hilton,Joanne Katz,George L Spaeth,Alfred Sommer +6 more
TL;DR: Racial differences in the normal optic disc are present among urban Americans, and these differences must be considered in evaluation of the optic disc for glaucoma and other optic neuropathies.
Journal ArticleDOI
Assessment and Control of Vitamin A Deficiency: The Annecy Accords
TL;DR: Clinical trials and kinetic models indicate that young children in developing countries cannot achieve normal vitamin A status from plant diets alone, and fortification, supplementation, or other means of increasing vitamin A intake are needed to correct widespread deficiency.
Journal ArticleDOI
Efficacy of vitamin A in reducing preschool child mortality in Nepal.
Keith P. West,Jonathan L. Katz,Steven C. LeClerq,Elizabeth K. Pradhan,James M. Tielsch,Alfred Sommer,R. P. Pokhrel,Subarna K. Khatry,S. R. Shrestha,M.R. Pandey +9 more
TL;DR: A randomized, double-masked, placebo-controlled community trial of 28,630 children aged 6-72 months was carried out in rural Nepal, an area representative of the Gangetic flood plain of South Asia.
Journal ArticleDOI
On estimating efficacy from clinical trials.
Alfred Sommer,Scott L. Zeger +1 more
TL;DR: The statistical properties of an alternative estimator of biologic efficacy that avoids the potential selection bias inherent in a comparison of compliant subgroups are derived and illustrated in the analysis of a randomized community trial of the impact of vitamin A supplementation on children's mortality.
