Abstract Today’s lifespan of companies tends to be low in the so-called micro-, small-, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). Organizational life cycle (OLC) theory indicates that organizational aging is related, but not determined, by the firm chronological age or its size. Therefore, a firm’s aging should be analyzed by other factors such as flexibility. The literature considers flexibility as an essential capability, a source of competitive advantage, and an enabler of long-term growth for MSMEs. However, little attention in emerging economies has been paid to examine the nuances of this concept in relation to the OLC in this type of companies. Additionally, studies tend to analyze flexibility as a general term, ignoring that it is a polymorphic concept. That is why there is a need to research the different categories of flexibility. Drawing on a quantitative approach conducting a factor analysis, a two-step cluster, and decision tree analysis to interrogate data from 257 MSMEs in Mexico, this study provides evidence of different dimensions of strategic and structural flexibility that help to characterize and predict the growth, maturity, and declining stages of MSMEs. Our results show that mature firms present more strategic and structural flexible characteristics than those involved in growth or decline stages. The flexible factors that help classify and predict an MSME in the maturity stage include open communication, decentralized decision making, and formalization. We provide a model with these results to illuminate unaddressed issues regarding the broad term of flexibility and its relationship to OLC.

Applying a life-span approach of human development and using the example of science-based business idea generation, the authors used structural equation modeling to test a mediation model for predicting entrepreneurial behavior in a sample of German scientists (2 measurement occasions; Time 1, N= 488). It was found that recalled early entrepreneurial competence in adolescence predicted business idea generation. This link was mediated by entrepreneurial human and social capital. Moreover, an entrepreneurial Big Five profile was associated with early entrepreneurial competence and predicted entrepreneurial human and social capital. Results underscore the relevance of the long-neglected developmental approach to entrepreneurship.

Explaining entrepreneurial behavior: Dispositional personality traits, growth of personal entrepreneurial resources, and business idea generation

Research background: According to the EU agenda, CSR should be considered an integral element of the current organizational strategy, including SMEs. While the debate continues about the optimal approach for successful CSR adaptation in SME, yet there is a need to shed light on the impact of owner-manager?s demographics on CSR practices.
Purpose of the article: The paper aims to examine whether owner-manager?s demographics (age, gender, education) matter for the implementation of CSR or not.
Methods: The study is based on a questionnaire filled in by owner-managers of SMEs operating in Czechia (454) and Slovakia (368). Factor analysis and nonparametric methods are used to test the hypotheses.
Findings & value added: This study shows that the relationships between CSR and owner-manager?s demographics are not alike between Slovakia and Czechia. Compared to owners, the evidence shows that the Czech managers are more oriented toward the CSR practices, while in Slovakia there is no difference. Such finding can be explained by Hofstede culture difference. In addition, analysis demonstrates that female Slovaks are more oriented to CSR than men, while it is not true in Czechia. Moreover, Czech individuals who graduated in the same field as their business are more oriented to the CSR, whereas in Slovakia this is not. In addition, young and old Slovak entrepreneurs are more oriented to the CSR than those 35-55 years old, manifesting a U-shape type of relationship. The originality of this work is manifested by the fact that it enriches the literature since it is among the first studies to analyze the relationships between owner-manager?s demographics and CSR in the SME segment for Czechia and Slovakia.

Do owner-manager demographics in SMEs matter for corporate social responsibility?

The objective of this study is to determine the difference in the entrepreneurial behavior of companies based on the demographic characteristics of their manager or leader. To comply with the above, a quantitative, transversal, and non-experimental research study was carried out, which consisted in applying an instrument to 262 managers of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in a northern city in Mexico. The collected information was analyzed in the software SPSS, version 26, with statistical testing by the Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests. The main findings show that these companies have differences in their entrepreneurial behavior based on the age and educational level of their managers, while gender and seniority at work are not differentiating elements in relation to the above. This research generates different possibilities of studies to be carried out in large companies from other sectors, and suggests the inclusion of behavioral characteristics as study variables.

Entrepreneurial Behavior of SMEs and Characteristics of the Managers of Northwest Mexico

Entrepreneurship and tourism are linked as relevant aspects of study due to their influence on the society’s development. In attempt to identify the main theoretical contributions in the 21st century, a bibliometric study was carried out, based on publications of tourism entrepreneurship in the Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus databases. As a result, data from 268 documents were obtained and processed in VosViewer. The main findings place Haber, Altinay, and Hallak as the most cited authors; when analyzing co-authorship, co-citation, and bibliographic coupling by authors, the distribution changes in relation to the contribution. England, Australia, and United States are the main countries that originate publications on the subject and have an impact on their dissemination; and Tourism Management is the Journal with the highest number of citations. The topics were grouped into three clusters: (1) Sustainable Rural Tourism, (2) Small business and lifestyle, and (3) Social entrepreneurship, with a predominantly human and social focus over the economic vision. This study can be the basis for further studies about adjacent, related, or emerging topics to entrepreneurship in tourism, as well as to generate practical proposals for new or potential entrepreneurs.

Entrepreneurship in Tourism Studies in the 21st Century: A Bibliometric Study of Wos and Scopus

Se han realizado estudios en el sector turistico enfocados a la aplicacion de actividades, el compromiso, fomento y el desarrollo de un proceso de innovacion organizacional. Dichos proyectos, se tomaron como base para el presente documento al observar la posibilidad de aportacion teorica en el eje tematico de la innovacion, es por ello; que el proposito de este estudio fue analizar el modelo de innovacion que aplica un hotel franquicia en Cajeme, Sonora; para lo cual se entrevistaron a cinco personas cuyos puestos son: gerente general, gerente de recepcion, recepcionista y ama de llaves, con base en una guia de entrevista semi-estructurada compuesta por cuatro ejes: el origen de la organizacion, el desarrollo, el crecimiento y la innovacion. Derivado de ello, los principales hallazgos se pueden clasificar en seis aspectos que componen un modelo de innovacion, donde resaltan elementos como: satisfaccion al cliente, tecnologia, nuevas ideas, competencia, valor agregado y servicios. Al final se categorizaron los elementos que componen el modelo en eficiente y deficiente. Con lo cual se tiene que de los elementos mas eficientes fue el valor agregado, ya que con el hecho de ser un hotel ecologico (el unico en la ciudad) genera una aceptacion en sus clientes. Dentro de la deficiencia es la generacion de nuevas ideas, ya que los colaboradores comentan que no existe un seguimiento para la incorporacion de las mismas. Es importante destacar que los principales resultados pueden ser retomados por otros estudios y/o empresas para la mejora de sus practicas de innovacion.

Modelo de Innovación de una Organización Hotelera en Cajeme, México

Small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) are important components for the economy in different countries around the world, since they are employment promoters. The way the operate, how they are formed, and how their family members organize are vital for their success. This paper provides a case study of a mexican restaurant company, that focuses in their family structure as an important factor, which is related with the business management and their growth. In order to achieve this, the study consists in a series of interviews to different members of the family and employees that are not part of the family. The data analysis was based in three dimensions: the property, the succession, and the structure. The results showed a tendency where this type of businesses are owned and/or managed by any family member, as long as he/she is working and constantly involved in the company development. Moreover, the way they relate is usually effective, since it is composed by members of the same family and there is enough trust to create more a family environment than a work one. Thereby, the profit distribution is equitable to all their members.
