Full-length axon regeneration in the adult mouse optic nerve and partial recovery of simple visual behaviors.
Silmara de Lima,Yoshiki Koriyama,Takuji Kurimoto,Júlia Teixeira Oliveira,Yuqin Yin,Yiqing Li,Hui-ya Gilbert,Michela Fagiolini,Ana Maria Blanco Martinez,Larry I. Benowitz +9 more
TL;DR: It is shown that with adequate stimulation, retinal ganglion cells are able to regenerate axons the full length of the visual pathway and on into the lateral geniculate nucleus, superior colliculus, and other visual centers, demonstrating the feasibility of reconstructing central circuitry for vision after optic nerve damage in mature mammals.
Journal ArticleDOI
Alzheimer's Disease-Like Pathology Induced by amyloid-β Oligomers in Nonhuman Primates
Leticia Forny-Germano,Natalia M. Lyra e Silva,Andre F. Batista,Jordano Brito-Moreira,Matthias Gralle,Susan E. Boehnke,Brian C. Coe,Ann Lablans,Suelen Adriani Marques,Ana Maria Blanco Martinez,William L. Klein,Jean-Christophe Houzel,Sergio T. Ferreira,Douglas P. Munoz,Fernanda G. De Felice +14 more
TL;DR: Generation of a macaque model of AD that links Aβ oligomers to tau and synaptic pathology has the potential to greatly advance the understanding of mechanisms centrally implicated in AD pathogenesis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Maternal and perinatal factors influencing the duration of exclusive breastfeeding during the first 6 months of life.
José M. Ceriani Cernadas,Graciela Noceda,Liliana Barrera,Ana Maria Blanco Martinez,Armando Garsd +4 more
TL;DR: A longer duration of exclusive breastfeeding was significantly associated with positive maternal attitudes toward breastfeeding, adequate family support, good mother-infant bonding, appropriate suckling technique, and no nipple problems.
Journal ArticleDOI
Diuretic activity of plants used for the treatment of urinary ailments in Guatemala
TL;DR: Through ethnobotanical surveys in Guatemala, about 250 plants were identified for use in the treatment of urinary ailments and three plants significantly increased uric acid excretion as did the reference drug, probenecid, 25 mg/kg.
Journal ArticleDOI
The diabetes drug liraglutide reverses cognitive impairment in mice and attenuates insulin receptor and synaptic pathology in a non-human primate model of Alzheimer's disease
Andre F. Batista,Leticia Forny-Germano,Julia R. Clarke,Natalia M. Lyra e Silva,Jordano Brito-Moreira,Susan E. Boehnke,Andrew Winterborn,Brian C. Coe,Ann Lablans,Juliana F.S. Vital,Suelen Adriani Marques,Ana Maria Blanco Martinez,Matthias Gralle,Christian Hölscher,William L. Klein,Jean-Christophe Houzel,Sergio T. Ferreira,Douglas P. Munoz,Fernanda G. De Felice,Fernanda G. De Felice +19 more
TL;DR: It is shown that liraglutide prevented the loss of brain insulin receptors and synapses, and reversed memory impairment induced by AD‐linked amyloid‐β oligomers (AβOs) in mice, and indicated that GLP‐1 receptor activation may be harnessed to protect brain insulin receptor, synaptic, and tau pathology in AD.
