We converted the marine microalga Nannochloropsis sp. into a crude bio-oil product and a gaseous product via hydrothermal processing from 200 to 500 °C and a batch holding time of 60 min. A moderate temperature of 350 °C led to the highest bio-oil yield of 43 wt %. We estimate the heating value of the bio-oil to be about 39 MJ kg−1, which is comparable to that of a petroleum crude oil. The H/C and O/C ratios for the bio-oil decreased from 1.73 and 0.12, respectively, for the 200 °C product to 1.04 and 0.05, respectively, for the 500 °C product. Major bio-oil constituents include phenol and its alkylated derivatives, heterocyclic N-containing compounds, long-chain fatty acids, alkanes and alkenes, and derivatives of phytol and cholesterol. CO2 was always the most abundant gas product. H2 was the second most abundant gas at all temperatures other than 500 °C, where its yield was surpassed by that of CH4. Enhanced CO2 fixation and biofuel production via microalgae: recent developments and future directions

Among the various types of biomass, microalgae have the potential of becoming a significant energy source for biofuel production in the coming years. Currently, research is mainly focusing on optimization of the cultivation methods and the conversion of just a single microalgae fraction (lipids for biodiesel production). Hydrothermal liquefaction is a method for thermochemical conversion of wet microalgae, producing a liquid energy carrier called ‘bio-oil’ or ‘biocrude’, next to gaseous, aqueous and solid by-products. A review of the available literature is presented here, analyzing the influence of parameters such as temperature, holding time and catalyst dosage on the yield and properties of the different product fractions. Also, the strain selection and the status of the technology for hydrothermal processes are analyzed. Finally, based on the findings obtained from the literature review, directions for future research are suggested.

We produced crude bio-oils from the microalga Nannochloropsis sp. via reactions in liquid water at 350 °C in the presence of six different heterogeneous catalysts (Pd/C, Pt/C, Ru/C, Ni/SiO2−Al2O3, CoMo/γ-Al2O3 (sulfided), and zeolite) under inert (helium) and high-pressure reducing (hydrogen) conditions. To our knowledge, this is the first application of common hydrocarbon processing catalysts to microalgae liquefaction in water. In the absence of added H2, all of the catalysts tested produced higher yields of crude bio-oil from the liquefaction of Nannochloropsis sp., but the elemental compositions and heating values of the crude oil (about 38 MJ/kg) were largely insensitive to the catalyst used. The gaseous products were mainly H2, CO2, and CH4, with lesser amounts of C2H4 and C2H6. The Ru and Ni catalysts produced the highest methane yields. Hydrothermal Liquefaction of a Microalga with Heterogeneous Catalysts

There has been growing concern about the way cultivating biomass for the production of agro-biofuels competes with food production. To avoid this competition biomass production for biofuels will, in the long term, have to be completely decoupled from food production. This is where microalgae have enormous potential. Here we propose a novel process based on microalgae cultivation using dilute fossil CO2 emissions and the conversion of the algal biomass through a catalytic hydrothermal process. The resulting products are methane as a clean fuel and concentrated CO2 for sequestration. The proposed gasification process mineralizes nutrient-bearing organics completely. Here we show that complete gasification of microalgae (Spirulina platensis) to a methane-rich gas is now possible in supercritical water using ruthenium catalysts. 60–70% of the heating value contained in the algal biomass would be recovered as methane. Such an efficient algae-to-methane process opens up an elegant way to tackle both climate change and dependence on fossil natural gas without competing with food production.

Catalytic gasification of algae in supercritical water for biofuel production and carbon capture

We describe a potential novel process (SunCHem) for the production of bio-methane via hydrothermal gasification of microalgae, envisioned as a closed-loop system, where the nutrients, water, and CO2 produced are recycled. The influence on the growth of microalgae of nickel, a trace contaminant that might accumulate upon effluent recycling, was investigated. For all microalgae tested, the growth was adversely affected by the nickel present (1, 5, and 10 ppm). At 25 ppm Ni, complete inhibition of cell division occurred. Successful hydrothermal gasification of the microalgae Phaeodactylum tricornutum to a methane-rich gas with high carbon gasification efficiency (68–74%) and C1–C3 hydrocarbon yields of 0.2 gC1–C3/gDM (DM, dry matter) was demonstrated. The biomass-released sulfur was shown to adversely affect Ru/C catalyst performance. Liquefaction of P. tricornutum at short residence times around 360°C was possible without coke formation.
