Journal ArticleDOI
What drives orogeny in the Andes
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors use a coupled thermomechanical numerical modeling technique to identify factors controlling the intensity of tectonic shortening of the South American plate overriding the subducting Nazca plate.
Journal ArticleDOI
Modeling of mineralogical composition, density and elastic wave velocities in anhydrous magmatic rocks
TL;DR: In this paper, the Gibbs free energy of the 8-component multiphase system is used to determine the equilibrium mineral assemblages of rocks of different bulk chemical compositions equilibrated at various P-T conditions.
Journal ArticleDOI
Complex hazard cascade culminating in the Anak Krakatau sector collapse.
Thomas R. Walter,Mahmud Haghshenas Haghighi,Mahmud Haghshenas Haghighi,Felix Schneider,Diego Coppola,Mahdi Motagh,Mahdi Motagh,Joachim Saul,Andrey Babeyko,Torsten Dahm,Valentin R. Troll,Frederik Tilmann,Frederik Tilmann,Sebastian Heimann,Sébastien Valade,Sébastien Valade,Rahmat Triyono,Rokhis Khomarudin,Nugraha Kartadinata,Marco Laiolo,Francesco Massimetti,Francesco Massimetti,Peter Gaebler +22 more
TL;DR: The authors show that Anak Krakatau exhibited an elevated state of activity several months prior to the collapse, including precursory thermal anomalies, an increase in the island’s surface area, and a gradual seaward motion of the southwestern flank.
Journal ArticleDOI
Probabilistic Tsunami Hazard Analysis: Multiple Sources and Global Applications
Anita Grezio,Andrey Babeyko,Maria Ana Baptista,Jörn Behrens,Antonio Costa,Gareth E. Davies,Eric L. Geist,Sylfest Glimsdal,F. I. Gonzalez,Jonathan Griffin,Carl B. Harbitz,Randall J. LeVeque,Stefano Lorito,Finn Løvholt,Rachid Omira,Christof Mueller,Raphaël Paris,Tom Parsons,Jascha Polet,William Power,Jacopo Selva,Mathilde B. Sørensen,Hong Kie Thio +22 more
TL;DR: Probabilistic Tsunami Analyses (PTHAs) are conducted in different areas of the world at global, regional, and local scales with the aim of understanding tsunami hazard to inform tsunami risk reduction activities.
Journal ArticleDOI
Probabilistic tsunami hazard in the Mediterranean Sea
TL;DR: In this article, the authors presented the first probabilistic estimate of earthquake-generated tsunami hazard for the entire Mediterranean Sea, estimating the annual probability of exceeding a given tsunami amplitude at any coastal location in the region by applying a Monte Carlo based technique.
