An active ankle-foot orthoses (AAFO) is presented where the impedance of the orthotic joint is modulated throughout the walking cycle to treat drop-foot gait. During controlled plantar flexion, a biomimetic torsional spring control is applied where orthotic joint stiffness is actively adjusted to minimize forefoot collisions with the ground. Throughout late stance, joint impedance is minimized so as not to impede powered plantar flexion movements, and during the swing phase, a torsional spring-damper control lifts the foot to provide toe clearance. To assess the clinical effects of variable-impedance control, kinetic and kinematic gait data were collected on two drop-foot participants wearing the AAFO. For each participant, zero, constant, and variable impedance control strategies were evaluated and the results were compared to the mechanics of three age, weight, and height matched normals. We find that actively adjusting joint impedance reduces the occurrence of slap foot allows greater powered plantar flexion and provides for less kinematic difference during swing when compared to normals. These results indicate that a variable-impedance orthosis may have certain clinical benefits for the treatment of drop-foot gait compared to conventional ankle-foot orthoses having zero or constant stiffness joint behaviors.

Adaptive control of a variable-impedance ankle-foot orthosis to assist drop-foot gait

The muscular work of galloping in horses is halved by storing and returning elastic strain energy in spring-like muscle-tendon units.These make the legs act like a child's pogo stick that is tuned to stretch and recoil at 2.5 strides per second. This mechanism is optimized by unique musculoskeletal adaptations: the digital flexor muscles have extremely short fibres and significant passive properties, whereas the tendons are very long and span several joints. Length change occurs by a stretching of the spring-like digital flexor tendons rather than through energetically expensive length changes in the muscle. Despite being apparently redundant for such a mechanism, the muscle fibres in the digital flexors are well developed. Here we show that the mechanical arrangement of the elastic leg permits it to vibrate at a higher frequency of 30-40 Hz that could cause fatigue damage to tendon and bone. Furthermore, we show that the digital flexor muscles have minimal ability to contribute to or regulate significantly the 2.5-Hz cycle of movement, but are ideally arranged to damp these high-frequency oscillations in the limb.

Currently, the mobility of above-knee amputees is limited by the lack of available prostheses that can efficiently replicate biologically accurate movements. In this study, a powered knee prosthesis was designed utilizing a novel mechanism, known as a clutchable series-elastic actuator (CSEA).The CSEA includes a low-power clutch in parallel with an electric motor within a traditional series-elastic actuator. The stiffness of the series elasticity was tuned to match the elastically conservative region of the knee's torque-angle relationship during the stance phase of locomotion. During this region, the clutch was used to efficiently store energy in the series elasticity. The fully autonomous knee prosthesis design utilized a brushless electric motor, ballscrew transmission and cable drive, as well as commercial electrical components. The knee was lighter than the eighth percentile and shorter than the first percentile male shank segment. The CSEA Knee was tested in a unilateral above-knee amputee walking at 1.3 m/s. During walking, the CSEA Knee provided biomechanically accurate torque-angle behavior, agreeing within 17% of the net work and 27% of the stance flexion angle produced by the biological knee. In addition, the process of locomotion reduced the net electrical energy consumption of the CSEA Knee. The knee's motor generated 1.8 J/stride, and the net energy consumption was 3.6 J/stride, an order of magnitude less energy than previously published powered knee prostheses.

Clutchable series-elastic actuator: Implications for prosthetic knee design

Over the last two decades, the foundations for physical human–robot interaction (pHRI) have evolved from successful developments in mechatronics, control, and planning, leading toward safer lightweight robot designs and interaction control schemes that advance beyond the current capacities of existing high-payload and high-precision position-controlled industrial robots. Based on their ability to sense physical interaction, render compliant behavior along the robot structure, plan motions that respect human preferences, and generate interaction plans for collaboration and coaction with humans, these novel robots have opened up novel and unforeseen application domains, and have advanced the field of human safety in robotics.

Physical Human–Robot Interaction

The principle of series elastic actuation offers considerable advantages for haptic displays compared to stiff actuators. The interaction force between motor and load is directly proportional to their relative position, which corresponds to the elongation of the elastic element. This way, the torque control task is transformed to a position control task, which comes natural to traditional DC motors. In this paper, several existing control strategies are analyzed and compared with respect to passivity concerns. Cascaded control with a fast inner velocity loop results to be the best option. Based on the analysis, boundaries for the parameters are presented, such that the force controller may contain integral action without jeopardizing passivity.

Passive and accurate torque control of series elastic actuators

Most robot designers make the mechanical interface between an actuator and its load as stiff as possible[9][10]. This makes sense in traditional position-controlled systems, because high interface stiffness maximizes bandwidth and, for non-collocated control, reduces instability. However, lower interface stiffness has advantages as well, including greater shock tolerance, lower reflected inertia, more accurate and stable force control, less damage during inadvertent contact, and the potential for energy storage. The ability of series elasticity (usually in the form of a compliant coating on an end-effector) to stabilize force control during intermittent contact with hard surfaces is well known. This paper proposes that for natural tasks where small-motion bandwidth is not of paramount concern, actuator to load interfaces should be significantly less stiff than in most present designs. Furthermore, by purposefully placing the majority of interface elasticity inside of an actuator package, a new type of actuator is created with performance characteristics more suited to the natural world. Despite common intuition, such a series-elastic actuator is not difficult to control.

My work in the field of computer vision has focused on building high speed visual tracking systems to provide position feedback for the control of unstable tasks. In order to make a juggling robot or a robotic helicopter stable, three qualities are essential -- high update rate, low latency, and decent accuracy and resolution. We want to put multiple vision systems on small robotic devices with limited payloads. Therefore the system must be very small, light, and cheap. However, we allow marking of the environment so the sophistication of the vision task can be extremely low.
