Journal ArticleDOI
Autoimmune thyroid disease: further developments in our understanding
Anthony P. Weetman,A.M. McGregor +1 more
TL;DR: The revolution in molecular techniques has allowed dissection of the autoimmune response in a way impossible to imagine 10 yr ago, but there have been no really major improvements in the understanding of the immunogenetics of thyroid autoimmunity, equivalent to those made in type 1 diabetes mellitus.
Journal ArticleDOI
Pulsed monoclonal antibody treatment and autoimmune thyroid disease in multiple sclerosis
Alasdair Coles,M. G. Wing,Sheila I. Smith,Francesca Coraddu,Sandra Greer,Craig J. Taylor,Anthony P. Weetman,Geoff Hale,V. Krishna K. Chatterjee,Herman Waldmann,Alastair Compston +10 more
TL;DR: Radiological and clinical markers of disease activity were significantly decreased for at least 18 months after treatment, however, a third of patients developed antibodies against the thyrotropin receptor and carbimazole-responsive autoimmune hyperthyroidism.
Journal ArticleDOI
Variant of TYR and autoimmunity susceptibility loci in generalized vitiligo.
Ying Jin,Stanca A. Birlea,Pamela R. Fain,Katherine Gowan,Sheri L. Riccardi,Paulene J. Holland,Christina M. Mailloux,Alexandra Sufit,Saunie M. Hutton,Anita Amadi-Myers,Dorothy C. Bennett,Margaret R. Wallace,Wayne T. McCormack,E. Helen Kemp,David J. Gawkrodger,Anthony P. Weetman,Mauro Picardo,Giovanni Leone,Alain Taieb,Thomas Jouary,Khaled Ezzedine,Nanny van Geel,Jo Lambert,Andreas Overbeck,Richard A. Spritz +24 more
TL;DR: In this article, a genomewide association study was conducted to identify generalized vitiligo susceptibility loci, where 579,146 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were found in 1514 patients with generalized vitilligo who were of European-derived white ancestry and compared the genotypes with publicly available control genotypes from 2813 CEU persons.
Journal ArticleDOI
High-Dose Leptin Activates Human Leukocytes Via Receptor Expression on Monocytes
Hamid Zarkesh-Esfahani,Graham Pockley,R. A. Metcalfe,Martin Bidlingmaier,Zida Wu,Abolghasem Ajami,Anthony P. Weetman,Christian J. Strasburger,Richard J. Ross +8 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that leptin has a direct effect on the generation of an inflammatory response, and is of relevance when considering leptin therapy and may partly explain the relationship among leptin, proinflammatory cytokines, insulin resistance, and obesity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Autoimmune thyroid disease: developments in our understanding.
Anthony P. Weetman,A.M. McGregor +1 more
TL;DR: A review of autoimmune thyroid disease will highlight the recent advances made in understanding the control of the autoimmune process particularly at pathogenetic and therapeutic levels and consider the current themes in autoimmunity in general.
