Incidence, risk, and prognosis factors of nosocomial pneumonia in mechanically ventilated patients.

TL;DR: Seventy-eight episodes of nosocomial pneumonia were detected in 322 consecutive mechanically ventilated patients admitted to a 1,000-bed teaching hospital from April 1987 through May 1988 to assess the incidence, risk, and prognosis factors of NP acquired during mechanical ventilation (MV).
Journal ArticleDOI

Severe community-acquired pneumonia. Epidemiology and prognostic factors.

TL;DR: Over a period of 4 consecutive yr, 92 nonimmunosuppressed patients with critical acute respiratory failure caused by severe community-acquired pneumonia were admitted to the respiratory intensive care unit (RICU) of a general hospital and mortality was associated with anticipated death within 4 to 5 yr, inadequate antibiotic treatment before RICU admission, mechanical ventilation requirements, use of PEEP, FIO2 greater than 0.6.
Journal ArticleDOI

Identification and prospective validation of clinically relevant chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) subtypes

TL;DR: In patients with COPD recruited at their first hospitalisation, three different COPD subtypes were identified and prospectively validated: ‘severe respiratory COPD’, ‘moderate respiratory COPd’ and ‘systemic COPD'.
Journal ArticleDOI

The use of respiration indices in the composting process: a review

TL;DR: A wide range of respirometric protocols have been reported based either on CO2 production, O2 uptake or release of heat as discussed by the authors, and the most common methods are those based on O 2 uptake.
