TL;DR: In this paper, the authors show how time jitter in semiconductor lasers, which arises when such sources are switched from below to above threshold, is related to actual operating conditions.
Abstract: We report an experimental study which shows how time jitter in semiconductor lasers, which arises when such sources are switched from below to above threshold, is related to the actual operating conditions. The effect is observed both in distributed feedback and in Fabry–Perot lasers, even if in the latter case it becomes more and more negligible when the output power of the final state is increased.

TL;DR: The only parameter needed to describe the process, when the laser is initially operated quite below threshold, is the value of the stationary output power of the final state, a result supported by recent experimental measurements.
Abstract: The statistical properties of the time delay between the switch on and the attainment of a fixed value of the output power in single-mode semiconductor lasers are analyzed and discussed. In particular, we show that the only parameter needed to describe the process, when the laser is initially operated quite below threshold, is the value of the stationary output power of the final state, a result supported by recent experimental measurements.

TL;DR: In this paper, the rate equations for the field and the number of excited carriers in multimode lasers, and considering the stochastic nature of spontaneous emissions, were used to find an expression for time jitter which explains the above-mentioned experimental results.
Abstract: Time jitter, which affects the switch‐on instant of pulse modulated semiconductor lasers, has recently been shown to be lower in Fabry–Perot than in distributed feedback lasers. In this letter starting from the rate equations for the field and the number of excited carriers in multimode lasers, and considering the stochastic nature of spontaneous emissions, we are able to find an expression for time jitter which explains the above‐mentioned experimental results.

TL;DR: In this paper, the instantaneous frequency fluctuations of CW narrowed-linewidth single-mode semiconductor lasers are studied under the most general conditions and a Monte Carlo simulation is shown to give results in good agreement with previous experimental measurements.
Abstract: The statistics of the instantaneous frequency fluctuations of CW narrowed-linewidth single-mode semiconductor lasers are studied under the most general conditions. In the case in which the rate equations describing the evolution of the system cannot be linearized the statistics are found to deviate appreciably from a Gaussian distribution. A Monte Carlo simulation is shown to give results in good agreement with previous experimental measurements. >
