There has been a great deal of material in the area of discrete-time transforms that has been published in recent years. This book does an excellent job of presenting important aspects of such material in a clear manner. The book has 11 chapters and a very useful appendix. Seven of these chapters are essentially devoted to the Fourier series/transform, discrete Fourier transform, fast Fourier transform (FFT), and applications of the FFT in the area of spectral estimation. Chapters 8 through 10 deal with many other discrete-time transforms and algorithms to compute them. Of these transforms, the KarhunenLoeve, the discrete cosine, and the Walsh-Hadamard transform are perhaps the most well-known. A lucid discussion of number theoretic transforms i5 presented in Chapter 11. This reviewer feels that the authors have done a fine job of compiling the pertinent material and presenting it in a concise and clear manner. There are a number of problems at the end of each chapter, an appreciable number of which are challenging. The authors have included a comprehensive set of references at the end of the book. In brief, this book is a valuable contribution to the general areas of signal processing and communications. It can be used for a graduate level course in perhaps two ways. One would be to cover the first seven chapters in great detail. The other would be to cover the whole book by focussing on different topics in a selective manner. This book  by  Elliott  and Rao  is extremely  useful to researchers/engineers who are working  in the areas of signal processing and communications. A 10-bit 40-Msample/s two-channel parallel pipelined ADC with monolithic digital background calibration has been designed and fabricated in a 1 /spl mu/m CMOS technology. Adaptive signal processing and extra resolution in each channel are used to carry out digital background calibration. Test results show that the ADC achieves a signal-to-noise-and-distortion ratio of 55 dB for a 0.8-MHz sinusoidal input, a peak integral nonlinearity of 0.34 LSB, and a peak differential nonlinearity of 0.14 LSB, both at a 10-bit level. The active area is 42 mm/sup 2/, and the power dissipation is 565 mW from a 5 V supply.

A digital background calibration technique for time-interleaved analog-to-digital converters

A structure for analog-to-digital (A/D) conversion capable of attaining high speed and using an array of lower-speed A/D converters is introduced. The structure is based on a quadrature mirror filter (QMF) bank, except that the analysis filter bank is a switched-capacitor circuit, whereas the synthesis filter bank is normally a digital circuit. It is shown that the effect of mismatches among the A/D converters in the array is considerably reduced by the QMF bank. Simulation and experimental results verifying the good performance of the proposed approach are included. >

Stochastic global optimization is a very important subject, that hasapplications in virtually all areas of science and technology. Therefore there is nothing more opportune than writing a book about a successful and mature algorithm that turned out to be a good tool in solving difficult problems. Here we present some techniques for solving several problems by means of Fuzzy Adaptive Simulated Annealing (Fuzzy ASA), a fuzzy-controlled version of ASA, and by ASA itself. ASA is a sophisticated global optimization algorithm that is based upon ideas of the simulated annealing paradigm, coded in the C programming language and developed to statistically find the best global fit of a nonlinear constrained, non-convex cost function over a multi-dimensional space. By presenting detailed examples of its application we want to stimulate the readers intuition and make the use of Fuzzy ASA (or regular ASA) easier for everyone wishing to use these tools to solve problems. We kept formal mathematical requirements to a minimum and focused on continuous problems, although ASA isable to handle discrete optimization tasks as well. This book can be used by researchers and practitioners in engineering and industry, in courses on optimization for advanced undergraduate and graduate levels, and also for self-study.

Stochastic Global Optimization and Its Applications with Fuzzy Adaptive Simulated Annealing

Systems containing both analog and digital functions have been investigated with the purpose of realizing mixed-signal integrated circuits with higher levels of functionality and integration. In most cases, such mixed-signal systems are inherently multirate because of the different sampling rates employed at various stages of the system. The multirate concepts have been used for traditional applications, such as subband coding and narrowband filter design. Some unconventional applications of multirate signal processing are also emerging, both for converting between analog samples and digital words, and for realizing processing functions in an easier and more economical way than would be possible using purely digital or analog techniques. This paper reviews fundamental multirate concepts, discusses some developments in this area of integrated multirate analog-digital systems, and outlines some possible future directions for research and application.

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance experiments can provide distances between pairs of atoms of a protein that are close enough and the problem is how to determine the 3D protein structure based on this partial distance information, called Molecular Distance Geometry Problem. It is possible to define an atomic order 1, ..., n and solve the problem iteratively using an exact method, called Branch-and-Prune (BP). The main step of BP algorithm is to solve a quadratic system to get the two possible positions for i, i > 3, in terms of the positions of i−3, i−2, i−1 and the distances di−1, i, di−2, i, di−3, i. Because of uncertainty in NMR data, some of the distances di−3, i may not be precise and the main problem to apply BP is related to the difficulty of obtaining an analytical expression of the position of atom i in terms of the positions of the three previous ones and the corresponding distances. We present such expression and although it is similar to one already existing in the literature, based on polyspherical coordinates, a new proof is given, based on Clifford algebra, and we also explain how such expression can be useful in BP using a parameterization which depends on di−3, i. The results suggest that a master equation might exist, what is generally not believed by many researchers.
