Journal ArticleDOI
Spread of Vector-borne Diseases and Neglect of Leishmaniasis, Europe
Jean-Claude Dujardin,Lenea Campino,Carmen Cañavate,Jean-Pierre Dedet,Luigi Gradoni,Ketty Soteriadou,Apostolos Mazeris,Yusuf Özbel,Marleen Boelaert +8 more
TL;DR: Exotic vector-borne diseases are gaining attention at the expense of leishmaniasis, according to the World Health Organization.
Journal ArticleDOI
Seasonal Dynamics of Phlebotomine Sand Fly Species Proven Vectors of Mediterranean Leishmaniasis Caused by Leishmania infantum.
Bulent Alten,Carla Maia,Maria Odete Afonso,Lenea Campino,Maribel Jiménez,Estela González,Ricardo Molina,Anne-Laure Bañuls,Jorian Prudhomme,Baptiste Vergnes,Céline Toty,Cécile Cassan,Nil Rahola,Magali Thierry,Denis Sereno,Gioia Bongiorno,Riccardo Bianchi,Cristina Khoury,Nikolaos Tsirigotakis,Emmanouil Dokianakis,Maria Antoniou,Vasiliki Christodoulou,Apostolos Mazeris,Mehmet Karakuş,Yusuf Özbel,Suha K. TL;DR: Despite annual variations, multiple collections performed over consecutive years provided homogeneous patterns of the potential behavior of leishmaniasis vectors in selected sites, which it is proposed may represent sentinel areas for future monitoring.
Journal ArticleDOI
Leishmania donovani leishmaniasis in Cyprus
Maria Antoniou,Christos Haralambous,Apostolos Mazeris,Francine Pratlong,Jean-Pierre Dedet,Ketty Soteriadou +5 more
TL;DR: The emergence of Leishmania donovani in Cyprus is discussed and some additional data regarding possible vector species that might have caused the disease outbreak on this island is provided.
Journal ArticleDOI
Rats as indicators of the presence and dispersal of six zoonotic microbial agents in Cyprus, an island ecosystem: a seroepidemiological study
Anna Psaroulaki,Maria Antoniou,Paulos Toumazos,Apostolos Mazeris,Ioannis Ioannou,Dimosthenis Chochlakis,Nikos Christophi,Pheidias Loukaides,Andreas Patsias,Ioanna Moschandrea,Yannis Tselentis +10 more
TL;DR: Seropositivity in rats against the pathogens tested appeared to follow the occurrence of these pathogens in humans, suggesting that rats could be used as disease sentinels and, together with GIS technology, they could be a useful tool for the identification of endemic foci and high-risk areas for each pathogen.
Journal ArticleDOI
Leishmaniases and the Cyprus paradox.
Apostolos Mazeris,Ketty Soteriadou,Jean-Pierre Dedet,Christos Haralambous,Andreas Tsatsaris,Joanna Moschandreas,Ippokratis Messaritakis,Vasiliki Christodoulou,Byron Papadopoulos,Vladimir Ivović,Francine Pratlong,Fedias Loucaides,Maria Antoniou +12 more
TL;DR: A survey carried out to provide an unbiased estimate of current transmission rates in dogs and humans showed a 9-fold increase in dog seroprevalence compared with 10 years ago, however, no human cases caused by Leishmania infantum were detected, although L. donovani cases were reported recently.
