Seasonal Dynamics of Phlebotomine Sand Fly Species Proven Vectors of Mediterranean Leishmaniasis Caused by Leishmania infantum.
Bulent Alten,Carla Maia,Maria Odete Afonso,Lenea Campino,Maribel Jiménez,Estela González,Ricardo Molina,Anne-Laure Bañuls,Jorian Prudhomme,Baptiste Vergnes,Céline Toty,Cécile Cassan,Nil Rahola,Magali Thierry,Denis Sereno,Gioia Bongiorno,Riccardo Bianchi,Cristina Khoury,Nikolaos Tsirigotakis,Emmanouil Dokianakis,Maria Antoniou,Vasiliki Christodoulou,Apostolos Mazeris,Mehmet Karakuş,Yusuf Özbel,Suha K. TL;DR: Despite annual variations, multiple collections performed over consecutive years provided homogeneous patterns of the potential behavior of leishmaniasis vectors in selected sites, which it is proposed may represent sentinel areas for future monitoring.
Journal ArticleDOI
Leishmania Genome Dynamics during Environmental Adaptation Reveal Strain-Specific Differences in Gene Copy Number Variation, Karyotype Instability, and Telomeric Amplification.
Giovanni Bussotti,Evi Gouzelou,Mariana Côrtes Boité,Ihcen Kherachi,Zoubir Harrat,Naouel Eddaikra,Jeremy C. Mottram,Maria Antoniou,Vasiliki Christodoulou,Aymen Bali,Fatma Z. Späth +30 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors conducted longitudinal genome analyses of 10 new Leishmania clinical isolates and revealed gain and loss of gene copies as potential drivers of long-term environmental adaptation in the field.
Journal ArticleDOI
Leishmaniases in Greece
Pantelis Ntais,Dimitra Sifaki-Pistola,Vasiliki Christodoulou,Ippokratis Messaritakis,Francine Pratlong,George Poupalos,Maria Antoniou +6 more
TL;DR: Phlebotomus similis believed to be the potential vector of L. tropica in Greece, was found in areas where the disease is widespread but also where cases have never been reported implying a danger of introduction of this anthroponotic parasite to new regions.
Journal ArticleDOI
Leishmaniases and the Cyprus paradox.
Apostolos Mazeris,Ketty Soteriadou,Jean-Pierre Dedet,Christos Haralambous,Andreas Tsatsaris,Joanna Moschandreas,Ippokratis Messaritakis,Vasiliki Christodoulou,Byron Papadopoulos,Vladimir Ivović,Francine Pratlong,Fedias Loucaides,Maria Antoniou +12 more
TL;DR: A survey carried out to provide an unbiased estimate of current transmission rates in dogs and humans showed a 9-fold increase in dog seroprevalence compared with 10 years ago, however, no human cases caused by Leishmania infantum were detected, although L. donovani cases were reported recently.
Journal ArticleDOI
Re-emergence of visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis in the Greek Island of Crete.
Vasiliki Christodoulou,Maria Antoniou,Pantelis Ntais,Ippokratis Messaritakis,Vladimir Ivović,Jean-Pierre Dedet,Francine Pratlong,Vit Dvorak,Yiannis Tselentis +8 more
TL;DR: Both VL and CL have spread to the whole of the island during the last 25 years, primarily in semi-urban and urban areas with altitudes of 0-50 m, with an average of three CL cases per year in the last 4 years.
