There is a special reason for reviewing this book at this time: it is the 50th edition of a compendium that is known and used frequently in most chemical and physical laboratories in many parts of the world. Surely, a publication that has been published for 56 years, withstanding the vagaries of science in this century, must have had something to offer. There is another reason: while the book is a standard fixture in most chemical and physical laboratories, including those in medical centers, it is not as frequently seen in the laboratories of physician's offices (those either in solo or group practice). I believe that the Handbook can be useful in those laboratories. Sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum), a member of the Lamiaceae, is used as an ornamental as well as a culinary herb. It is a rich source of the phenolic compound methyl chavicol and is used as a traditional medicinal plant in India, where the crop is grown on ~2,500 ha annually (4). The species is native to India, where it has been cultivated for >5,000 years. During the rainy season, August of 2013, a severe leaf blight was observed on 30- to 45-day-old sweet basil plants in experimental fields (approximately 5 ha) at the CSIR-CIMAP and adjoining areas in Lucknow. Initial symptoms comprised small, irregular, necrotic lesions that coalesced into a leaf blight. Infected parts of the leaves turned black during wet and humid conditions. The incidence of symptoms ranged from 20 to 30%. Infected leaf samples were cut into small pieces and surface-sterilized with 1% sodium hypochlorite for 1 min, followed by two rinses in sterilized, distilled water. The leaf pieces were then blotted dry with sterilized filter paper, placed onto potato dextrose agar (PDA), and incubated at 28°C for 3 to 5 days. Blackish-brown fungal colonies developed. Microscopic examination revealed the presence of brown conidiophores that were cylindrical, septate, unbranched, and straight or geniculate near the apex. Conidia were three-septate, mostly curved at the third cell from the base, which was usually larger and darker than the other cells; intermediate cells were brown or dark brown; terminal cells were subhyaline or pale brown and 16 to 23.5 × 8.5 to 11.5 μm (the average size of 100 conidia was 19.9 × 10.18 μm). On the basis of these characteristics, the fungus was identified as Cochliobolus lunatus (anamorph Curvularia lunata (Wakk.) Boedijin) (1,2). The identification was confirmed by sequencing the internal spacer (ITS) region of ribosomal DNA (rDNA). Genomic DNA was extracted from five fungal isolates, using the 5 Prime Archive Pure DNA Cell/Tissue kit, and subjected to a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay with the universal primers ITS1 and ITS4 (5). The amplified product was cloned and sequenced. An NCBI-BLASTn search showed greatest homology (98% similarity) with the ITS sequence of C. lunatus (GenBank Accession No. DQ836800). The sequence was deposited in Genbank (KM272001). A pathogenicity test was carried out using 10, 30-day-old sweet basil (cv. CIM Soumya) plants in pots, by spraying a spore suspension (105 spores/ml) onto the leaves of each plant. Five plants treated similarly with sterilized, distilled water served as a control treatment. The plants were kept at 27 ± 2°C and 85 ± 3% RH for 8 to 10 days. Small, irregular, necrotic lesions appeared after 4 days on all inoculated leaves, while leaves of control plants remained asymptomatic. Fungi re-isolated from inoculated leaves resembled C. lunatus on the basis of microscopic and sequence data, fulfilling Koch's postulates. The fungus was not re-isolated from the control plants. C. guatemalensis has been reported to cause a leaf spot on sweet basil in Korea (3). To our knowledge, this is the first report of a sweet basil leaf blight caused by C. lunatus in India. New report of a sweet basil leaf blight caused by Cochliobolus lunatus in India.

Background: The pre-school age groups (2-5years) were evaluated for growth and nutritional status at immunization clinic at Maharana Bhoopal hospital, Udaipur. Objectives: To study the malnutrition in pre-school children. Material & Methods: The cross sectional study had been carried out between august 2013 to November 2013 with 1080children at immunization clinic Maharana Bhoopal Hospital Udaipur. Body weight, height were recorded including with age, gender and also education and occupation and socio-economic status of mother by interviewing the mother at the time they attended the immunization clinic and by the help of MAMTA CARD. Result: The age and sex distribution of 1080 examined children revealed that 52.8% were males while 47.2% were females. The malnutrition in the subjects was determined as per World Health Organization child growth standards [1]. Data reveals that 4.2% of male children, 4.1% of female children were severely stunted and 10.7% of male children, 11.2% of female children were stunted. Whereas 3.1% of male children, 4.7% of female children were found to be severely wasted and 11.4% of male children, 12.3% of female children were wasted. Also found that 7.5% of male children, 7.6% of female children were overweight and 1.9% of male children, 1.0% of female children were obese. Conclusion: There is need of more education about nutrition and dietary habits to population including proper antenatal and postnatal care of mother to decrease the prevalence of malnutrition in children. Assessment of Malnutrition in Pre-School children visiting immunization clinic, Maharana Bhoopal Hospital, Udaipur (Rajasthan) -

Objective: In India, psychological aspect of HIV infection i women is poorly understood. The purposes of this study were to evaluate sexual dysfunction, depressi on rate and health-related quality of life and eval uate the association between these three major domains in a group of HIV+ subjects in Mysore, India. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 85 female HIV+ patients who had referred to voluntary counseling and testing we re r cruited based on convenience sampling from May to December 2014. The purpose of the study was explained and interested individuals provided informed consent an d completed validated questionnaires [Female sexual functional index (FSFI), Hamilton rating scale of Depression, HIV/AIDS Targetedquality of life Instrument scale (HATQoL)}.Results: Average age of the participants was 33 ± 07 years , duration of HIV was 3.54±1.79 years, CD4 count was 524±176 cells/mm 3 and 20.0% were very severely depressed. Logistic r egression indicated that Duration of HIV had effect on FSFI and depression (p<0.0001). F SFI was significantly correlated with Depression in all domains and HAT-QoL was significantly correlated wi th female sexual dysfunction. Pearson’s correlation coefficients showed significant association between the Duration of HIV and the domains of FSFI and De pression (r= -0.712, r=-0.674); between FSFI and Depression (r= -0.935) and between HAT-QoL (r= 0.232). The CD4 count was not significantly associated with any of the ma jor domains. Conclusion: Sexual function and depression showed association with quality of life and duratio n of HIV. Effective treatment of depression and sex ual function may improve the quality of life of HIV-infected per son.

Sexual dysfunction, Depression and Quality of Life in Female Patients with HIV Infection

Arsenic poisoning in ground water had been major challenge for the mankind in arsenic hit areas. In India, this problem is a big alarm in the entire Gangetic belt. The arsenic poisoning through drinking water has caused lots of health hazards to humans especially related hepato-biliary. This present study was carried out to investigate the therapeutic role of the ethanolic extract of Pleurotus cornucopiae on Sodium Arsenite induced hepatotoxicity in rats. Sodium Arsenite at the dose of 8mg/kg -1 body weight orally caused liver damage in rats as manifested by the significant rise in serum levels of Serum Glutamic Pyruvate Transaminase (SGPT), Serum Glutamate Oxalate Transaminase (SGOT), Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) and Bilirubin levels compared with control. Oral administration of 400mg extracts of P. cornucopiae (/kg) for 30 days to Sodium Arsenite treated rats showed significant ameleoration in these levels. Thus, the entire study reveals that ethanolic extract of P. cornucopiae at the dose of 400 mg/kg -1 body weight shows hepatoprotective effect against arsenic induced toxicity.
