There is a special reason for reviewing this book at this time: it is the 50th edition of a compendium that is known and used frequently in most chemical and physical laboratories in many parts of the world. Surely, a publication that has been published for 56 years, withstanding the vagaries of science in this century, must have had something to offer. There is another reason: while the book is a standard fixture in most chemical and physical laboratories, including those in medical centers, it is not as frequently seen in the laboratories of physician's offices (those either in solo or group practice). I believe that the Handbook can be useful in those laboratories. Maize (Zea mays L.) 2n=20, is the third most important cereal crop after rice and wheat in the world. It is referred to as “Miracle Crop” and “Queen of the Cereals” due to its high productivity potential compared to other Graminae family members. It is believed to have originated in Southern Mexico or Northern Guatemala (Weather wax, 1955). Protein of maize is deficient in two essential amino acids, lysine and tryptophan (Bhatia and Rabson, 1987). In non-QPM, the endosperm contains a high amount of zein which is completely devoid of lysine and tryptophan.

Stability Analysis for Grain Yield and Quality Parameters in QPM (Zea mays L.) Inbred Line Crosses

The present study was undertaken to estimate the general and specific combining ability in diallel mating design (reciprocal) involving 10 parents for 12 characters in sponge gourd [Luffa cylindrica (Roem) L.] at IIVR, Varanasi, during 2003-05. The combining ability analysis revealed highly significant differences among the treatments for all the parameters studied. The variances due to sca were higher than the gca for all the characters indicating the predominance of non-additive gene effects. Out often parents ‘VR-44’ and ‘VR-156’ were best general combiners for days to 1st flowering of male bud emergence, fruit length, fruit weight and marketable fruit yield/vine as they expressed maximum and significant gca effect. The crosses ‘NSG-28 x VR-116’, ‘Pusa Supriya x VR-44’ and ‘VR-44 x VR-116’ were identified as best specific combiners for days to 50% female bud anthesis and days to 1st harvesting. The best specific combinations for marketable yield/plant were ‘VR-104 x VR103’, ‘EC-381651 x VR-103’ and ‘VR-11 x VR-156’.

New Record of Uraria Blossom Blight Caused by Colletotrichum siamense in India

A dioxovanadium(V) complex of vitamin-B6 Schiff base [VO 2 L] ( 1 ) (where H 2 L·HCl is 3-hydroxy-5-(hydroxymethyl)-4-(((2-hydroxyphenyl)imino)methyl)-2-methylpyridin-1-ium chloride) has been prepared and structurally characterized. Its photo-induced cytotoxicity and mechanism of cell death has been studied. Single crystal X-ray structure shows five-coordinate square-pyramidal geometry of the complex having the dianionic O,N,O-donor tridentate vitamin-B6 Schiff base and two cis -oriented oxo ligands bound to V(V). DFT study shows the HOMO located on the amino-phenolic moiety, while the LUMO is on the protonated aromatic unit, i.e., the pyridiniumphenolate moiety. Vitamin-B6 transporting membrane carrier (VTC) pathway seems to be responsible for the higher cellular uptake and activity of the complex into the cervical HeLa and breast cancer MCF-7 cells in preference to the normal embryonic fibroblast 3T3 cells. The complex exhibits reactive oxygen species (ROS) mediated apoptotic photocytotoxicity in visible light of 400–700 nm in the cancer cells (IC 50 : ~16 μ M ), while being essentially non-toxic in the dark. Alkaline Comet assay shows damage of the nuclear DNA.
