Buildings are among the largest consumers of electricity in the US. A significant portion of this energy use in buildings can be attributed to HVAC systems used to maintain comfort for occupants. In most cases these building HVAC systems run on fixed schedules and do not employ any fine grained control based on detailed occupancy information. In this paper we present the design and implementation of a presence sensor platform that can be used for accurate occupancy detection at the level of individual offices. Our presence sensor is low-cost, wireless, and incrementally deployable within existing buildings. Using a pilot deployment of our system across ten offices over a two week period we identify significant opportunities for energy savings due to periods of vacancy. Our energy measurements show that our presence node has an estimated battery lifetime of over five years, while detecting occupancy accurately. Furthermore, using a building simulation framework and the occupancy information from our testbed, we show potential energy savings from 10% to 15% using our system.

The multi-criteria decisionmaking (MCDM) is suggested to be a viable method for contractor selection. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) has been used as a tool for MCDM. However, AHP can only be employed in hierarchical decision
models. For complicated decision problems, the analytic network process (ANP) is highly recommended since ANP allows interdependent influences specified in the model. An example is demonstrated to illustrate how this method is conducted, including the formation of supermatrix and the limit matrix.

The fourth industrial revolution (4IR) marks a significant period in world history as this innovative era has the potential to change the way we think and execute ideas in every area of our lives The emerging technologies coupled with its rapid impacts prompt a swift and urgent revamp of higher education curricula worldwide This is to provide present-day built environment students with an opportunity to comprehend the intrinsic details and applications of this latest disruptor The aim of this research is to determine undergraduate courses that will be relevant to the built environment in the nearest future A qualitative Delphi approach was adopted to validate these courses as institutions of higher learning prepare students for this latest wave of innovation Fourteen experts completed a two-stage iterative Delphi study process and reached consensus on all 29 technological areas identified This study found that concepts such as data analytics, artificial intelligence, computer programming, computer coding and data mining should be integrated into the curricula of universities to ease the transition of students from the lecture-room to the world of work It is recommended that universities across South Africa and beyond integrate innovation-driven courses to provide an understanding of the technologies accompanying the 4IR era to not only produce graduates who comprehend these applications but also to build on these concepts to address socio-economic problems plaguing the continent

Construction Information management is the act of collecting, storing, distributing, archiving and deleting or destroying information to facilitate smooth running of construction projects. This information is important for planning, budgeting and completion of construction projects. In construction, managing of information is a vital part of decision-making procedure and it helps to guarantee that the accurate decisions are made by stakeholders at the appropriate time. 4th industrial revolution is poised to fundamentally alter the way construction activities are carried out. It represents a new era of innovation in technology, which will boost man-machine relation and catalyze effective and efficient information management in construction. Construction industry continues to encounter challenges in information management, but it is expected that the advent of 4th industrial revolution will assist in resolving these challenges. This research aims to evaluate the role of 4th industrial revolution tools in improving the management of construction information. Data from extensive review of literature were extracted to demonstrate the level of activities of 4IR tools in construction information management. The paper finds out that due to the heavy quantities of information generated, processed, and stored prior to, during and post construction, 4IR tools can assist in managing this information. The findings also provide new knowledge about the management of construction information. The study concluded that adoption of 4IR tools will enhance effective and efficient information management in the construction industry.

The importance of building quality to the health and well-being of occupants and surrounding neighbors cannot be overemphasized. Smart structures were construed to proffer solution to various issues of sustainable development including social factors that is concerned with health and safety of people. Based on existing literature materials on building quality, smart structures and general aspect of sustainable developments, this study examined the benefits of smart structures in the prevention of various health issues in infrastructural buildings, which has been a concern for stakeholders in the architecture, engineering and construction industry. The criterion for indoor environmental quality was adopted and various health and bodily issues related to building quality were explained. The adoption of smart structure concept will help to manage physical, chemical, biological and psychological factors of building with a view to enhancing better quality of life of occupants.
