Buildings are among the largest consumers of electricity in the US. A significant portion of this energy use in buildings can be attributed to HVAC systems used to maintain comfort for occupants. In most cases these building HVAC systems run on fixed schedules and do not employ any fine grained control based on detailed occupancy information. In this paper we present the design and implementation of a presence sensor platform that can be used for accurate occupancy detection at the level of individual offices. Our presence sensor is low-cost, wireless, and incrementally deployable within existing buildings. Using a pilot deployment of our system across ten offices over a two week period we identify significant opportunities for energy savings due to periods of vacancy. Our energy measurements show that our presence node has an estimated battery lifetime of over five years, while detecting occupancy accurately. Furthermore, using a building simulation framework and the occupancy information from our testbed, we show potential energy savings from 10% to 15% using our system.

The multi-criteria decisionmaking (MCDM) is suggested to be a viable method for contractor selection. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) has been used as a tool for MCDM. However, AHP can only be employed in hierarchical decision
models. For complicated decision problems, the analytic network process (ANP) is highly recommended since ANP allows interdependent influences specified in the model. An example is demonstrated to illustrate how this method is conducted, including the formation of supermatrix and the limit matrix.

Roles and effects of utilizing recent technologies on material management for construction work in South Africa

Retention bond guarantees that the contractor will carry out all necessary work to correct structural and/or other defects discovered immediately after completion of the contract, even if full payment has been made to the contractor. This research work assesses the effects of retention bond on construction project performance in Nigerian construction industry. Cost data were collected through the distribution of sixty (60) questionnaires of which fifty-seven administered questionnaires were retrieved. Data were analysed using correlation and regression methods of analysis. The findings from the study indicated that there is a significant relationship between retention bond and construction project performance in terms of cost and time. The study recommends that professional bodies should encourage the use of retention bond in the Nigerian construction industry by sensitizing professionals of its importance which is to enable effective delivery of projects within its initial cost and time. Also, contractors should encourage their clients to always include sum to cover up for retention bond in their contract sum.

 Abstract — The use of technological innovations has been touted to be beneficial in the delivery of construction projects. Particularly, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology is widely regarded to be of immense advantage for the management of construction projects. This study focused on evaluating the barriers to the use of RFID technology for the delivery of construction projects. Using Gauteng Province in South Africa as the study area, questionnaire was used in eliciting responses from construction professionals which made up the population of the study. Retrieved data were analyzed using Mean Item Score and One-Sample t-test. Findings from the study showed that the most significant barriers to the deployment of RFID for construction project delivery are high cost and lack of awareness. Conclusively, the study made recommendations that would aid in the abatement of the barriers to the use of RFID technology for construction project delivery.

Abating the Barriers to the Deployment of Radio Frequency Identification for Construction Project Delivery in South Africa

The upward trends in housing construction costs have been a major issue in the economy as a whole. The research uses typical 3 - bedroom bungalow in Lagos to analyze the trends in housing construction cost from 2000 to 2009. The basic question for this research is whether the inflation in housing construction costs between 2000 and 2009 is statistically significant. The index number and one sample t test were used to analyze the data. The findings show that costs maintained upward trends throughout the study period. The analysis shows that between 2000 and 2009, the average annual inflation in costs and inflation were significant at 11.27% and 268.88% respectively. The incessant increase in the cost of housing construction has contributed to shortage in housing supply leading to high cost of urban housing accommodation, construction estimates losing usefulness within short periods, difficulty in forecasting and planning and frequent contract price variations, which can lead to abandonment of projects. The recommendation is that government should execute policies to lower the inflation rates so that prices in the cost of housing materials would come down. Government should also provide public housing and appropriate infrastructure for the masses.
