Glycemic index: overview of implications in health and disease : Is the glycemic index important in human nutrition?

This study compared the phenolic compositions of common green leafy vegetable extracts from Vernonia amygdalina (VA), Telfairia occidentalis (TO), Talinium triangulare (TT), and Amaranthus hybridus (AH) and their effects on the angiotensin-I-converting enzyme (ACE) and cisplatin-induced malonylaldehyde (MDA) production in an isolated rat kidney homogenate. HPLC confirmed the presence of phenolic compounds in the extracts. Furthermore, all extracts inhibited ACE activity dosedependently; however, the extract from VA exhibited the highest ACE activity while TT exhibited the least. Incubation of the kidney homogenate with 1mM cisplatin caused an increase in MDA production; however, all the extracts inhibited the level of MDA produced. Nevertheless, VA extract exhibited the highest inhibition. These activities of the vegetable extracts could be attributed to their phenolic compositions and may suggest some possible mechanism of the actions. However, VA appeared to be the most potent among the vegetables tested.

Colorectal cancer is the third most common malignancy in males and the second most common in females, with significant variations in the worldwide distribution, and remains among four leading causes of cancer deaths overall, shows global cancer statistics. The highest incident rates are found in economically developed countries, whereas the lowest rates are noted in Africa and South-Central (Jemal et al., 2011). However, striking increase in colorectal cancer incident trends is observed in areas historically at low risk, such as Spain and some Eastern European (the Czech Republic and Slovakia) and Eastern Asian countries (Japan). On the other hand, generally high incident rates over the past several decades are going down in the Unites States (Center et al., 2009). These recent “perturbations” in colorectal cancer trends probably result from a combination of risk factors, including obesity, sedentary lifestyle, increased prevalence of smoking, excessive alcohol consumption and “westernization” in dietary habits a diet rich in red and processed meat and low intake of fruits and vegetables (Center et al., 2009; Chao et al., 2005; Jemal et al., 2011). Decreasing incident and mortality rates are mainly associated with colorectal cancer screening and improved treatment. Prognosis of these patients depends on the stage of the cancer at diagnosis. As the AJCC (American Joint Committee on Cancer) stage increases from stage I to stage IV, the 5-year overall survival rates decrease dramatically, reaching 90% if the disease is detected early when still localized, though just 39% of colorectal cancers are found at this stage. Almost 25% of patients have a metastatic disease at diagnosis, with a 5-year survival of less than 10% (Goldberg et al., 2007). The primary treatment for colorectal cancer is surgical resection. More than two-thirds of patients undergo radical surgery, but 30-50% of patients who present with stage II or III tumors ultimately experience disease recurrence and distant metastases (Rodriguez-Moranta et al., 2006). Dietary Anthocyanins: Impact on Colorectal Cancer and Mechanisms of Action

Background The development of cholinesterase (ChE) and monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors for management of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) has come with their undesirable side effects. Hence, research for potent but natural ChE and MAO inhibitors with little or no side effects is essential. This study investigated the potentials of alkaloid extracts from two Cola species as nutraceuticals for prevention and management of AD. Methods Alkaloid extracts were obtained from two Cola species (Cola nitida [KN] and Cola acuminata [KA]) by solvent extraction method. The extracts were characterized for their alkaloid contents using gas chromatography (GC). The effects of the extracts on ChE and MAO activities were investigated in vitro. Also, the extracts' ability to inhibit Fe2+-induced lipid peroxidation in rat brain homogenate, scavenge DPPH and OH radicals, as well as chelate Fe2+ were determined. Results GC characterization revealed the presence of augustamine and undulatine as the predominant alkaloids in the extracts. There was no significant (P > 0.05) difference in the inhibitory effects of the extracts on ChE activities. However, KA extract exhibited significantly higher (P < 0.05) MAO inhibitory effect than KN. Also, KA extract inhibited Fe2+- induced malondialdehyde (MDA) production in rat brain homogenate more significantly than KN, while there was no significant difference in DPPH and OH radicals scavenging, as well as Fe2+-chelating abilities of the extracts. Conclusions Our findings revealed that KN and KA alkaloid extracts exhibited significant effect in vitro on biological pathways that may contribute to neuroprotection for the management of neurodegenerative diseases.
