
 One of the most impediments in solar distillation is the lower fresh water yield. In the present study, the effect of water depth on the thermal performance of tubular solar still (TSS) with v-corrugated and flat absorbers has been analyzed experimentally and optimized using the response surface methodology (RSM) technique. Experimental results showed that the water temperature of TSS using a v-corrugated absorber is improved by increasing the surface area of water. The peak temperature of water from the TSS using corrugated fins is improved by about 7.54, 7.12, and 3.77% than the TSS with a flat absorber for water depths of 5, 10, and 15 mm, respectively. The average temperature difference between water and cover is improved by about 53.19, 64.28, and 112.90% for water depths of 5, 10, and 15 mm using the TSS with a corrugated absorber than a flat absorber. The influence of water depth on cumulative yield using 5, 10, and 15 mm in the v-corrugated absorber is recorded as 4.35, 3.86, and 3.83 kg, and it is higher to about 108.13, 128.40, and 216.52% compared to the cumulative yield of TSS with a flat absorber, respectively.

Performance analysis of tubular solar still with different water depths on corrugated and flat absorbers

Experimental investigations of the hemispherical solar still (HSS) augmentation with various numbers of evacuated tubes (EVT) were performed and evaluated. The modified hemispherical solar still (HSS-EVT) performance was illustrated with two categories of EVT distributions and compared with the traditional HSS (THSS) design. In the first category, the EVT was distributed on the water basin perimeter in all directions (Dis-ɸ), and in the second category, the EVT was distributed in the south direction (Dis-So). The impact of various water heights (Hw) from 1 to 4 cm was also studied. Results revealed that the integration of EVT had a significant influence on distillate performance. The highest daily production rate at 1 cm water height of HSS-EVT was 5860 mL with an increment of 551, 316, 156, and 91% compared to THSS at NEVT = (16, 8, 4, and 2 tubes), respectively. The productivity increment by 7.2%, when compared EVT distribution (Dis-ɸ) with (Dis-So) effect. The reduction of water level to 1 cm increases the yield by about 5.96, 11.61, and 18.74% with HW (2, 3, and 4 cm), respectively. The proposed system's peak energy and exergy efficiency value was 42.29 and 5.57%, with an increment of 47.30 and 124%, respectively, related to the traditional one. The maximum daily production related to the exposed surface area was 6.69 L/m2 at NEVT = 8 tubes. The estimated cost varied between 0.00237, and 0.0101 USD/L.

Productivity enhancement of solar still through heat transfer enhancement techniques in latent heat storage system: a review

ABSTRACT The current world requirement for electricity and freshwater is increasing daily. Innovative hybrid photovoltaic/thermal (PV/T) solar still can yield more distilled water and solar PV power. In this study, a hybrid PV/T solar still method is established through active condensation aimed at improving the efficiency of the solar PV modules with the support of rehashed edible corn oil that acts as a coolant to reduce the temperature. This work has been carried out on a polycrystalline solar panel with a backside cooling storage tank, and the rehashed edible corn oil filled in the backside storage tank acts as a coolant. A two-compartment solar still tank was constructed. The first compartment consists of waste metals, waste copper, nickel–chromium (NiCr heater) lead, and edible oil collected from the backside of the PV storage tank. The second compartment consists of waste metals, copper, NiCr lead, and saline water. Also, each container has one blower that operates at every particular time interval. In this hybrid PV/T method, the efficiency of the solar PV is improved by using rehashed edible oil that acts as a phase change material and the thermal efficiency of the still tank is enhanced by using the two-compartment technique, which is a technique to increase the condensation and evaporation and to correspondingly enhance the production of the distilled water. The modified hybrid PV/T active solar still improves the performance of the solar PV and enhances the productivity. The hybrid PV/T energetic solar still showed an improved solar PV efficiency of 11.7% and an enhanced still thermal efficiency of 18.01%.

Hybrid PVT Active Two Compartment Solar Still for improving performance of Solar PV and Enhance the productivity of Solar still

In the present study, it is aimed to improve the overall performance of a parallel-flow solar air collector (PSC) using phase change material (PCM)-based latent heat energy storage unit and recyclable materials. In the simulation part of this work, two PSCs including a collector without modification and a collector equipped with PCM filled aluminum cans have been analyzed. The simulation part of the current work is handling the flow of air through the collectors and melting-solidification of PCM material inside the aluminum cans. Considering the simulation study results, three different PSC configurations have been manufactured including an unmodified PSC, a PSC with PCM-filled aluminum cans on the front side of the absorber and a PSC with PCM-filled aluminum cans on both sides (back and front) of the absorber surface. According to the results of the analyses, utilizing PCM-filled aluminum cans in both surfaces of the absorber plate of the PSC improved numerically and experimentally obtained exergetic efficiency values as 61.70% and 74.03%, respectively. Moreover, enviro-economic analysis has been conducted within the scope of this work. The payback periods of the analyzed systems were between 2.17 and 2.43 years. Employing PCM in the both sides of the absorber surface decreased the payback time of the system as 10.69% in comparison to the conventional PSC. Moreover, using PCMs on the single and double side of the absorber plate improved the annual carbon dioxide savings as 22.68% and 35.42%, respectively.
