In situ immune response and mechanisms of cell damage in central nervous system of fatal cases microcephaly by Zika virus
Raimunda do Socorro da Silva Azevedo,Jorge Rodrigues de Sousa,Marialva Tereza Ferreira de Araújo,Arnaldo Jorge Martins Filho,Bianca Nascimento de Alcantara,Fernanda Montenegro de Carvalho Araújo,Maria G. L. Queiroz,Ana Cecília Ribeiro Cruz,Beatriz H. Baldez Vasconcelos,Jannifer Oliveira Chiang,Lívia Carício Martins,Livia Medeiros Neves Casseb,Eliana Vieira Pinto da Silva,Valéria Lima Carvalho,Barbara Cristina Baldez Vasconcelos,Sueli Rodrigues,Consuelo Silva de Oliveira,Juarez Antônio Simões Quaresma,Pedro Fernando da Costa Vasconcelos +18 more
TL;DR: The in situ immune response profile and mechanisms of neuronal cell damage in fatal Zika microcephaly cases were investigated and changes found were mainly calcification, necrosis, neuronophagy, gliosis, microglial nodules, and inflammatory infiltration of mononuclear cells.
Journal ArticleDOI
Zika virus epidemic in Brazil. I. Fatal disease in adults: Clinical and laboratorial aspects
Raimunda do Socorro da Silva Azevedo,Marialva Tereza Ferreira de Araújo,Arnaldo Jorge Martins Filho,Consuelo Silva de Oliveira,Bruno Tardelli Diniz Nunes,Ana Cecília Ribeiro Cruz,Ana Giselia Portela de Araújo Cortes Nascimento,Rita Medeiros,Cezar Augusto Muniz Caldas,Fernando Costa Araújo,Juarez Antônio Simões Quaresma,Barbara Cristina Baldez Vasconcelos,Maria G. L. Queiroz,Elizabeth Salbé Travassos da Rosa,Daniele Freitas Henriques,Eliana Vieira Pinto da Silva,Jannifer Oliveira Chiang,Lívia Carício Martins,Daniele Barbosa de Almeida Medeiros,Juliana Abreu Lima,Márcio Roberto Teixeira Nunes,Jedson Ferreira Cardoso,Sandro Patroca da Silva,Pei Yong Shi,Robert B. Tesh,Sueli Rodrigues,Pedro Fernando da Costa Vasconcelos +26 more
TL;DR: These three cases demonstrate other potential complications of ZikV infection, in addition to microcephaly and Guillain-Barre syndrome, and they suggest that individuals with immune suppression and/or autoimmune disorders may be at higher risk of developing severe disease, if infected with ZIKV.
Journal ArticleDOI
In situ inflammasome activation results in severe damage to the central nervous system in fatal Zika virus microcephaly cases
Jorge Rodrigues de Sousa,Raimunda do Socorro da Silva Azevedo,Arnaldo Jorge Martins Filho,Marialva Tereza Ferreira de Araújo,Ermelinda do Rosário Moutinho da Cruz,Barbara Cristina Baldez Vasconcelos,Ana Cecília Ribeiro Cruz,Consuelo Silva de Oliveira,Lívia Carício Martins,Beatriz H. Baldez Vasconcelos,Livia Medeiros Neves Casseb,Jannifer Oliveira Chiang,Juarez Antônio Simões Quaresma,Pedro Fernando da Costa Vasconcelos,Pedro Fernando da Costa Vasconcelos +14 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that inflammasome activation can aggravate the neuroinflammatory response and consequently increase CNS damage in neonates with fetal neural ZIKV infection and microcephaly.
Journal ArticleDOI
Human kidney damage in fatal dengue hemorrhagic fever results of glomeruli injury mainly induced by IL17
Carla Pagliari,Juarez Antônio Simões Quaresma,Luciane Kanashiro-Galo,Leda Viegas de Carvalho,Webster Oliveira Vitoria,Wellington F Silva,Ricardo Penny,Barbara Cristina Baldez Vasconcelos,Pedro Fernando da Costa Vasconcelos,Maria Irma Seixas Duarte +9 more
TL;DR: It was observed a lymphomononuclear infiltrate, neutrophils and nuclear fragmentation in the glomeruli, hydropic degeneration, nuclear retraction, eosinophilic tubules and intense acute congestion in the renal tissues.
Journal ArticleDOI
Correlation between Apoptosis and in Situ Immune Response in Fatal Cases of Microcephaly Caused by Zika Virus
Jorge Rodrigues de Sousa,Raimunda do Socorro da Silva Azevedo,Arnaldo Jorge Martins Filho,Marialva Tereza Ferreira de Araújo,Ermelinda R. C Moutinho,Barbara Cristina Baldez Vasconcelos,Ana Cecília Ribeiro Cruz,Consuelo Silva de Oliveira,Lívia Carício Martins,Beatriz H. Baldez Vasconcelos,Livia Medeiros Neves Casseb,Jannifer Oliveira Chiang,Juarez Antônio Simões Quaresma,Juarez Antônio Simões Quaresma,Juarez Antônio Simões Quaresma,Pedro Fernando da Costa Vasconcelos,Pedro Fernando da Costa Vasconcelos +16 more
TL;DR: Examination of material from the fatal cases of microcephaly revealed lesions in the cerebral cortex, edema, vascular proliferation, neuronal necrosis, gliosis, neuronophagy, calcifications, apoptosis, and neuron loss, and an analysis of the linear correlation between tumor necrosis factors suggested that the immune response may be associated with the apoptotic phenomenon observed in ZIKV-induced microCEphaly.
