Journal ArticleDOI
The first detection of Toxoplasma gondii DNA in environmental fruits and vegetables samples
TL;DR: Fruits and vegetables contaminated with T. gondii may play a role in the prevalence of toxoplasmosis in Poland and DNA identification in a large number of fruits and vegetables samples with rapid molecular detection methods was shown.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia lamblia recovered from flies on a cattle farm and in a landfill.
Beata Szostakowska,W. Kruminis-Lozowska,Maria Racewicz,Ronald Knight,Leena Tamang,Przemysław Myjak,Thaddeus K. Graczyk +6 more
TL;DR: Filth flies associated with a cattle barn and a municipal landfill were tested positive by combined immunofluorescent antibody and fluorescent in situ hybridization for Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia lamblia on their exoskeletons and in their guts.
Journal ArticleDOI
Detection of Toxoplasma gondii oocysts in environmental soil samples using molecular methods
Anna Lass,Halina Pietkiewicz,E. Modzelewska,Aurélien Dumètre,Beata Szostakowska,Przemysław Myjak +5 more
TL;DR: The results showed that soil contaminated with T. gondii oocysts may play a role in the epidemiology of human toxoplasmosis in Poland, and the genotype of detected parasites was determined at the SAG2 locus.
Journal ArticleDOI
Human alveolar echinococcosis in Poland: 1990-2011.
Wacław Nahorski,Józef Piotr Knap,Z. Pawlowski,Marek Krawczyk,Jerzy A. Polański,Jerzy Stefaniak,Waldemar Patkowski,Beata Szostakowska,Halina Pietkiewicz,Anna Grzeszczuk,Iwona Felczak-Korzybska,Elżbieta Gołąb,Natalia Wnukowska,Małgorzata Paul,Elzbieta Kacprzak,Elżbieta Sokolewicz-Bobrowska,Jolanta Niścigorska-Olsen,Aleksandra Czyrznikowska,Lidia Chomicz,Danuta Cielecka,Przemysław Myjak +20 more
TL;DR: It is confirmed that AE is an emerging disease in Poland, which is the fourth country in Europe with over 120 cases detected, and the need of a wider national programme for implementation of screening in the highest AE risk areas (north-eastern Poland) with an effort to increase the public awareness of the possibility of contracting E. multilocularis.
Journal ArticleDOI
The first detection of Echinococcus multilocularis DNA in environmental fruit, vegetable, and mushroom samples using nested PCR
TL;DR: The results clearly demonstrate that E. multilocularis may be a direct source of human infections and shows the need to educate the public about the threat, especially people living in at-risk areas.
