The challenges of global economies foster supply chains to have to increase their processes of collaboration and dependence between their nodes, generating an increase in the level of vulnerability to possible impacts and interruptions in their operations that may affect their sustainability. This has developed an emerging area of interest in supply chain management, considering resilience management as a strategic capability of companies, and causing an increase in this area of research. Additionally, supply chains should deal with the three dimensions of sustainability (economic, environmental, and social dimensions) by incorporating the three types of objectives in their strategy. Thus, there is a need to integrate both resilience and sustainability in supply chain management to increase competitiveness. In this paper, a systematic literature review is undertaken to analyze resilience management and its connection to increase supply chain sustainability. In the review, 232 articles published from 2000 to February 2020 in peer-reviewed journals in the Scopus and ScienceDirect databases are analyzed, classified, and synthesized. With the results, this paper develops a conceptual framework that integrates the fundamental elements for analyzing, measuring, and managing resilience to increase sustainability in the supply chain. Finally, conclusions, limitations, and future research lines are exposed.

A Conceptual Framework to Manage Resilience and Increase Sustainability in the Supply Chain

Business Continuity in the COVID-19 Emergency: A Framework of Actions Undertaken by World-Leading Companies.

The main focus of this study is to conduct a systematic literature review to integrate lean, agile, resilient, green and sustainable (LARGS) paradigms in the supply chain (SC) domain. To achieve this aim, several research questions were designed: First, how to locate LARGS research in context of SC domain? For this, it is important to understand which types of research articles should be selected for the study? Further, where such studies were conducted (geographical location)? Second, what is the focus of research in LARGS paradigm in SCs? For this, it is important to study, which types of industries or sectors have been targeted in literature? In addition, which tools and techniques have been used mostly? Third, what are the current trends in the relationships of LARGS paradigms, among themselves, and with SC performance measures? Fourth, what are the emerging issues, unexplored areas in this field, based on these what could be future research avenues in this subject domain have been proposed? A total of 160 relevant articles published during 1999–2019 were used for analysis. Based on analysis, findings are summarised, and main research issues and possible future research directions in LARGS paradigms in SCs are highlighted.

A systematic literature review to integrate lean, agile, resilient, green and sustainable paradigms in the supply chain management

Companies are under pressure to re-engineer their supply chains to ‘go green’ while simultaneously improving their resilience to cope with unexpected disruptions where the supplier selection decision plays a strategic role. We present a new approach to supplier evaluation and allocating the optimal order quantity from each supplier with respect to green and resilience (Gresilience) characteristics. An integrated framework that considers traditional business, green and resilience criteria and sub-criteria was developed, followed by a calculation of importance weight of criteria and sub-criteria using analytical hierarchy process (AHP). We evaluate suppliers using the technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS). The obtained weights from AHP and TOPSIS were integrated into a developed multi-objective programming model used as an order allocation planner and the e-constraint method was used to solve the multi-objective optimization problem. TOPSIS was applied to select the final Pareto solution based on its closeness from the ideal solution. The applicability and effectiveness of the proposed approach was illustrated using a real case study through a comparatively meaningful ranking of suppliers. The study provides a helpful aid for managers seeking to improve their supply chain resilience along with ‘go green’ responsibilities.

Gresilient supplier assessment and order allocation planning

One of the major challenges of the supply chain managers is to select the best suppliers among all possible ones for their business. Although the research on the supplier selection with regards to green, sustainability or resiliency criteria has been contributed by many papers, simultaneous consideration of these criteria in a fuzzy environment is rarely studied. Hence, this study proposes a fuzzy decision framework to investigate the sustainable-resilient supplier selection problem for a real case study of palm oil industry in Malaysia. Firstly, the resilient-based sustainable criteria are localized for the suppliers’ performance evaluation in palm oil industry of Malaysia. Accordingly, 30 criteria in three different aspects (i.e. general, sustainable and resilient) are determined by statistical tests. Moreover, a hyper-hybrid model with the use of FDEMATEL (fuzzy decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory), FBWM (fuzzy best worst method), FANP (fuzzy analytical network process) and FIS (fuzzy inference system), simultaneously is developed to employ their merits in an efficient way. In this framework, regarding the outset, the relationships among the criteria/sub-criteria are obtained by FDEMATEL method. Then, initial weights of the criteria/sub-criteria are measured by FBWM method. Next, the final weights of criteria/sub-criteria considering the interrelationships are calculated by FANP. Finally, the performance of the suppliers is evaluated by FIS method. To show the applicability of this hybrid decision-making framework, an industrial case of palm oil in Malaysia is presented. The findings indicate the high performance of the proposed framework in this concept and identify the most important criteria including the cost in general aspects, resource consumption as the most crucial sustainable criterion and agility as the most important resilient criterion.
