Journal ArticleDOI

Oxidative stress markers in bipolar disorder: a meta-analysis

TL;DR: A meta-analysis of studies that evaluated markers of oxidative stress in individuals with BD, as compared to healthy controls suggests that oxidative stress markers are increased in BD and that oxidative Stress may play a role in the pathophysiology of BD.
Journal ArticleDOI

Allostatic load in bipolar disorder: implications for pathophysiology and treatment.

TL;DR: Al provides an explanatory link to apparently unrelated findings such as cognitive impairment and higher rates of physical comorbidity and mortality that are observed in the course of BD and further highlight the importance of effective long-term prophylaxis.
Journal ArticleDOI

Serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor is decreased in bipolar disorder during depressive and manic episodes.

TL;DR: Serum BDNF levels were decreased in manic and depressed BD patients and in matched healthy controls, and these findings further support the hypothesis that the BDNF signaling system may play a role in the pathophysiology of BD.
