The high catalytic activity of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can be realized by increasing their effective active sites, which prompts us to perform the functionalization on selected linkers by introducing a strong Lewis basic group of fluorine. Herein, the exquisite combination of paddle-wheel [Cu2(CO2)4(H2O)] clusters and meticulously designed fluorine-funtionalized tetratopic 2',3'-difluoro-[p-terphenyl]-3,3″,5,5″-tetracarboxylic acid (F-H4ptta) engenders one peculiar nanocaged {Cu2}-organic framework of {[Cu2(F-ptta)(H2O)2]·5DMF·2H2O}n (NUC-54), which features two types of nanocaged voids (9.8 Å × 17.2 Å and 10.1 Å × 12.4 Å) shaped by 12 paddle-wheel [Cu2(COO)4H2O)2] secondary building units, leaving a calculated solvent-accessible void volume of 60.6%. Because of the introduction of plentifully Lewis base sites of fluorine groups, activated NUC-54a exhibits excellent catalytic performance on the cycloaddition reaction of CO2 with various epoxides under mild conditions. Moreover, to expand the catalytic scope, the deacetalization-Knoevenagel condensation reactions of benzaldehyde dimethyl acetal and malononitrile were performed using the heterogenous catalyst of NUC-54a. Also, NUC-54a features high recyclability and catalytic stability with excellent catalytic performance in subsequent catalytic tests. Therefore, this work not only puts forward a new solution for developing high-efficiency heterogeneous catalysts, but also enriches the functionalization strategies for nanoporous MOFs.

Fluorine-Functionalized NbO-Type {Cu2}-Organic Framework: Enhanced Catalytic Performance on the Cycloaddition Reaction of CO2 with Epoxides and Deacetalization-Knoevenagel Condensation.

The catalytic performance of metal-organic framework (MOF)-based catalysts can be enhanced by increasing their catalytic sites, which prompts us to explore the multicore cluster-based skeletons by using designed functional ligands. Herein, the exquisite combination of [Tb4(μ2-OH)2(CO2)8] cluster and 2,6-bis(2,4-dicarboxylphenyl)-4-(4-carboxylphenyl)pyridine (H5BDCP) ligand generated a highly robust nanoporous framework of {[Tb4(BDCP)2(μ2-OH)2]·3DMF·5H2O}n (NUC-58), in which each four {Tb4} clusters are woven together to generate an elliptical nanocage (aperature ca. 12.4 Å). As far as we know, NUC-58 is an excellent nanocage-cluster-based {Tb4}-organic framework with the outstanding confined pore environments of a large specific surface area, high porosity, and plentiful coexisting Lewis acid-base sites of Tb3+, μ2-OH and Npyridine atoms. Performed experiments exhibited that NUC-58 owns a better catalytic performance for the cycloaddition reactions under mild conditions with a high turnover number and turnover frequency. Furthermore, NUC-58, as an eminent heterogeneous catalyst, can enormously boost the Knoevenagel condensation reactions. Thus, this work opens a path for the precise design of polynuclear metal cluster-based MOFs with excellent catalysis, stability, and regenerative behavior.

Nanocage-Based Tb3+-Organic Framework for Efficiently Catalyzing the Cycloaddition Reaction of CO2 with Epoxides and Knoevenagel Condensation.

The rare combination of InIII 5p and ZnII 3d in the presence of a structure-oriented TDP6- ligand led to a robust hybrid material of {(Me2NH2)[InZn(TDP)(OH2)]·4DMF·4H2O}n (NUC-42) with the interlaced hierarchical nanochannels (hexagonal and cylindrical) shaped by six rows of undocumented [InZn(CO2)6(OH2)] clusters, which represented the first 5p-3d nanochannel-based heterometallic metal-organic framework. With respect to the multifarious symbiotic Lewis acid-base and Bronsted acid sites in the high porous framework, the catalytic performance of activated NUC-42a upon CO2 cycloaddition with styrene oxide was evaluated under solvent-free conditions with 1 atm of CO2 pressure, which exhibited that the reaction could be well completed at ambient temperature within 48 h or at 60 °C within 4 h with high yield and selectivity. Moreover, because of the acidic function of metal sites and a central free pyridine in the TDP6- ligand, deacetalization-Knoevenagel condensation of acetals and malononitrile could be efficiently facilitated by an activated sample of NUC-42a under lukewarm conditions.

Nanochannel {InZn}-Organic Framework with a High Catalytic Performance on CO2 Chemical Fixation and Deacetalization-Knoevenagel Condensation.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have gained attention as multifunctional catalytic platforms, allowing us to gain important insights into synergistically activating both C-H bonds and oxygen for improving oxidation. Herein, by ingenious incorporation of anthraquinone, we report an anthraquinone-based MOF as a bifunctional heterogeneous photocatalytic platform to simultaneously activate inert C(sp3)-H bonds and oxygen for C-H bond oxidation. Making use of the rigid framework with the fixation and isolation effect, both a great chemical stability and bifunctional synergistic photocatalytic effects were obtained through the immobilization of anthraquinone into a MOF. Importantly, while decorating two carboxyl groups on anthraquinone, the carbonyl groups of anthraquinone photosensitizers were not involved in coordinating the self-assembly and orderly arranged on the wall of channels that were constructed through a π-π interaction between the anthraquinone moieties in the adjacent layers, which was beneficial to form and stabilize the excited-state radical intermediates in the molecule-fenced channels, and the close proximity between the catalytic sites and the substrates to abstract a hydrogen atom from the substrate through the hydrogen atom transfer process aimed at activating the inertness of C-H bonds. Moreover, high-density-distributed anthraquinone dyes in the confined channels would activate oxygen to form singlet oxygen (1O2) through an energy transfer pathway, further promoting inert C(sp3)-H bond oxidation efficiency. Under visible light irradiation, this anthraquinone-based MOF was successfully applied to explore activation and oxidation of a series of substrates containing benzylic C(sp3)-H bonds in the presence of air or oxygen to produce the corresponding carbonyl products. This bifunctional photocatalytic platform based on a heterogeneous MOF provides an available catalytic avenue to develop a scalable and sustainable synthetic strategy using green and sustainable oxygen as the potent oxidant.

Anthraquinone-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks as a Bifunctional Photocatalyst for C-H Activation.

Polymorphism control of metal-organic frameworks is highly desired for elucidating structure-property relationships, but remains an empirical process and is usually done in a trial-and-error approach. We adopted the rarely used actinide cation Th4+ and a ditopic linker to construct a series of thorium-organic frameworks (TOFs) with a range of polymorphs. The extraordinary coordination versatility of Th4+ cations and clusters, coupled with synthetic modulation, gives five distinct phases, wherein the highest degree of interpenetration (threefold) and porosity (75.9 %) of TOFs have been achieved. Notably, the O atom on the capping site of the nine-coordinated Th4+ cation can function as a bridging unit to interconnect neighboring secondary building units (SBUs), affording topologies that are undocumented for other tetravalent-metal-containing MOFs. Furthermore, for the first time HCOOH has been demonstrated as a bridging unit of SBUs to further induce structural complexity. The resulting TOFs exhibit considerably different adsorption behaviors toward organic dyes, thus suggesting that TOFs represent an exceptional and promising platform for structure-property relationship study.

Unveiling the Unique Roles of Metal Coordination and Modulator in the Polymorphism Control of Metal-Organic Frameworks.

An In(III) based metal-organic framework (MOF), In-pbpta, with soc topology was constructed from the trigonal prismatic [In3(μ3-O)(H2O)3(O2C-)6] secondary building unit (SBU) and a custom-designed tetratopic linker H4pbpta (pbpta = 4,4',4″,4‴-(1,4-phenylenbis(pyridine-4,2,6-triyl))-tetrabenzoic acid)). The obtained MOF shows a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area of 1341 m2/g with a pore volume of 0.64 cm3/g, which is the highest among the scarcely reported In-soc-MOFs. The constructed MOF demonstrates excellent performance as a heterogeneous Lewis acid catalyst for highly efficient conversion in a one-pot multicomponent Strecker reaction for the preparation of α-aminonitriles under solvent-free conditions, which can be easy to separate and recycle without significant loss of activity for up to seven cycles. The computational modeling studies suggest the presence of the three substrates in close vicinity to the In-oxo cluster. The strong interactions of the aldehyde/ketone and the amine with the In-oxo cluster together with the readily available cyanide ion around the In-oxo cluster lead to high catalytic conversion within a short period of time for the MOF catalyst. Our work therefore lays a foundation to develop MOF as a new class of efficient heterogeneous catalyst for one-pot Strecker reaction.
