A method of operating a user equipment for measuring non-contiguous carriers comprises: changing a position of a local oscillator to be in the middle of the non-contiguous carriers; measuring the carriers simultaneously; estimating a power level of an interferer in a gap in the non-contiguous carriers which creates image interference; and compensating the measurement dependent on the interferer power level and an image rejection factor.

This article presents a comprehensive survey of the literature on self-interference (SI) in long-term evolution advanced (LTE-A) and fifth-generation (5G) new radio transceivers and should serve the reader as a guide and starting point for further work on SI management. Current trends in cellular transceiver designs are discussed, and reasons why new technologies, such as carrier aggregation, cause potential sensitivity degradation due to self-interfering signals are highlighted. The survey provides an overview of the most common interference mechanisms and continues with a taxonomy on SI mitigation architectures by comparing the strengths and weaknesses of various techniques.

A Survey of Self-Interference in LTE-Advanced and 5G New Radio Wireless Transceivers

A mixer-first receiver design in 28-nm CMOS is discussed. An embedded 5-bit mixer digital-to-analog converter provides wideband tuneability to enhance device matching and, hence, suppress the multiple local oscillator (LO) harmonics as well as to improve the overall image rejection (IR) performance. Two-stage baseband amplifiers support a 50-MHz baseband bandwidth, which covers the entire channel for long-term evolution non-contiguous carrier aggregation. The proposed design effectively reduce multiple LO harmonics down to below $-{\hbox{62 dBm}}$ . The system achieves 2.6-dB noise figure, $> {\hbox{15-dBm}}$ out-of-band third-order input intercept point, and an IR ratio $> {\hbox{66 dB}}$ with 60-mW power, including five on-chip low dropout regulators.

An Interference-Resilient Wideband Mixer-First Receiver With LO Leakage Suppression and I/Q Correlated Orthogonal Calibration

This work presents a receiver capable of receiving three simultaneous cellular channels with an aggregate bandwidth of 60 MHz, enabling a 300 Mb/s downlink rate. The receiver has 16 RF LNA ports covering the cellular bands within the 572–2700 MHz frequency range. It supports LTE-advanced Rel-12 Cat6, HSPA+ Rel-11, TD-SCDMA Rel-9, and GSM/EDGE Rel-9. The 40 nm CMOS receiver consumes 13.7 and 17.6 mA of battery current in 3G and LTE modes, respectively, including the PLL, DCXO, and biasing for a single channel.

Self-Calibration Technique for Carrier Aggregation Receivers

Carrier aggregation is a key feature of the 3GPP LTE-Advanced cellular network standard that combines multiple channels to support higher data rates and improve the utilization of fragmented spectrum holdings. This work presents a cellular transmitter capable of transmitting a maximum of four channels simultaneously, two contiguous channels in two bands, with an aggregate bandwidth of up to 80 MHz, supporting a 200 Mbps uplink rate. The transmitter has 8 RF output ports covering the cellular transmit bands within the 572–2025 MHz frequency range. It can support LTE-Advanced Release 12 Cat7, $\text{HSPA} + \text{Release} 11$ , TDSCDMA Release 9, and GSM/EDGE Release 9. The 40 nm CMOS transmitter consumes 22 mA and 27 mA in 3G and LTE modes (at 0 dBm antenna power), respectively, including the PLL, DCXO, and biasing for a single channel.

A Rel-12 2G/3G/LTE-Advanced 2CC Transmitter

A single hybrid receiver is provided for processing both single carrier and carrier aggregated (CA) communications signals where carriers are split into independent receive paths without any additional external components. The receiver receives all contiguous and non-contiguous intra-band CA and inter-band CA signals, including those of unequal bandwidths, allowing for improved rejection and balanced rejection of jamming signals on either side of the two carrier signals.

Various configurations and arrangements of systems and methods for providing multi-carrier aggregation are described. A system in accordance with the disclosure can include a first mixer configured to receive a first signal in a first frequency band, a second mixer configured to receive a second signal in a second frequency band, a third mixer configured to receive the second signal in the second frequency band, and a fourth mixer configured to receive a third signal in a third frequency band. The system can further include a controller configured to selectively activate one of the first mixer and the second mixer, and selectively activate one of the third mixer and the fourth mixer.
