Journal ArticleDOI

Oxidation of methane in the oxic surface layer of a deep lake sediment (Lake Constance)

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors measured oxygen and methane metabolism using intact sediment cores taken from the profundal (147 m depth) of Lake Constance and determined vertical O2 profiles with O2 microelectrodes.
Journal ArticleDOI

Hydrogen turnover by psychrotrophic homoacetogenic and mesophilic methanogenic bacteria in anoxic paddy soil and lake sediment

TL;DR: Cultures with H2 as energy source resulted in the enrichment of chemolithotrophic homoacetogenic bacteria whenever incubation temperatures were lower than 20°C, and Hydrogenotrophic methanogens could only be enriched at 30°C from anoxic paddy soil.
Journal ArticleDOI

Methane production in littoral sediment of Lake Constance

TL;DR: In this article, the maximum rates of CH4 production in the littoral sediment were observed in 2-5 cm depth, with an average δ13C of −562% and δD of −354%, indicating that CH4 was produced from methyl carbon.
Journal ArticleDOI

Bicarbonate-dependent production and methanogenic consumption of acetate in anoxic paddy soil

TL;DR: The rate of H2 production that was required for chemolithotrophic acetate production from CO2 was two orders of magnitude higher than the actually measured rate, and most of the CO2 incorporation into acetate was caused by electron donors other than H2 and/or by exchange reactions.
