Journal ArticleDOI
The Sodium Content of Processed Foods in South Africa during the Introduction of Mandatory Sodium Limits.
Sanne A.E. Peters,Elizabeth Dunford,Elizabeth Dunford,Lisa J. Ware,Teresa Harris,Adele Walker,Mariaan Wicks,Tertia van Zyl,Bianca Swanepoel,Karen E Charlton,Mark Woodward,Mark Woodward,Jacqui Webster,Bruce Neal +13 more
TL;DR: Sodium levels in two-thirds of foods covered by the South African sodium legislation were at or below the permitted upper levels at the mandatory implementation date of the legislation and many more were close to the limit.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sodium and potassium intake in South Africa: an evaluation of 24-hour urine collections in a white, black, and Indian population.
TL;DR: Findings support the South African government's sodium reduction legislation, as well as global initiatives, and should be given to promoting the intake of potassium-rich foods, as this may have a greater public health impact than focusing only on dietary sodium reduction.
Journal ArticleDOI
Monitoring the South African population's salt intake: spot urine v. 24 h urine.
TL;DR: Estimations of Na excretion by the three formulas should be used with caution when reporting on Na intake levels, as more research is needed to validate and develop a specific formula for the South African context with its different population groups.
Journal ArticleDOI
Interactions between C-reactive protein genotypes with markers of nutritional status in relation to inflammation
Cornelie Nienaber-Rousseau,Bianca Swanepoel,Robin C. Dolman,Marlien Pieters,Karin R. Conradie,G. Wayne Towers +5 more
TL;DR: The impact that nutritional status can have on reducing the inherent genetic susceptibility to a heightened systemic inflammatory state is highlighted, as HbA1C and fasting glucose levels interacted with some SNPs to influence the CRP.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sodium content of foodstuffs included in the sodium reduction regulation of South Africa
Bianca Swanepoel,Linda Malan,P. Herman Myburgh,Aletta E. Schutte,Krisela Steyn,Edelweiss Wentzel-Viljoen +5 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors measured the sodium content and established whether industry is complying with the targets set in Regulation R.214 by means of atomic absorption spectrometry subsequent to microwave digestion.
