Spontaneous and directional pumpless transportation (SDPT) of subaqueous gas bubbles has great prospects in eliminating destructive gas bubbles in fluid transportation pipes. However, with current technology it is difficult to realize non-buoyancy driven long-distance SDPT. How to realize long-distance SDPT of subaqueous gas bubbles and how to fabricate a surface with the capacity of long-distance SDPT of subaqueous gas bubbles on engineering metals still remain a challenge. Here, a serial wedge-shaped wettability pattern with an exterior surrounding subaqueous superaerophobic region and interior subaqueous superaerophilic region is designed to realize long-distance SDPT of subaqueous gas bubbles. The process is driven by unbalanced surface tension forces; hence, subaqueous gas bubbles can not only be transported on a horizontal and straight pattern, but can also be easily transported on a horizontal and spiral-shaped pattern or on a wave-shaped pattern that is spatially tilted. In addition, a universal method composed of electrochemical etching and laser etching is also proposed to fabricate the serial wedge-shaped wettability pattern on various engineering metal materials including Al, Mg alloy, Ti alloy, and Zn.

External Stimuli Responsive Liquid‐Infused Surfaces Switching between Slippery and Nonslippery States: Fabrications and Applications

Spontaneous directional transportation of droplets on solid surfaces driven by structure gradients has attracted much attention due to its large-scale applications, such as heat transfer, microfluidic devices, water collection, and separation. It also provides new insight for theoretical research into the interactions between droplets and solid surfaces. This review article summarizes recent progress in the spontaneous directional transportation of droplets on surfaces with structure gradients. Currently, surfaces with structure gradients can be divided into three types: wedge corners with a gradient opening angle, wedge-shaped surfaces, and conical substrates. This review focuses on their basic theory, detailed transport processes, fabrication methods, influence factors and application development. Finally, a perspective of this mode of transportation for future development is proposed.

Spontaneous directional transportations of water droplets on surfaces driven by gradient structures.

Biosurfaces with geometry-gradient structures or special wettabilities demonstrate intriguing performance in manipulating the behaviors of versatile fluids. By mimicking natural species, that is, the cactus spine with a shape-gradient morphology and the Picher plant with a lubricated inner surface, we have successfully prepared an asymmetric slippery surface by following the processes of CO2-laser cutting, superhydrophobic modification, and the fluorinert infusion. The asymmetric morphology will cause the deformation of gas bubbles and subsequently engender an asymmetric driven force on them. Due to the infusion of fluorinert, which has a low surface energy (∼16 mN/m, 25 °C) and an easy fluidic property (∼0.75 cP, 25 °C), the slippery surface demonstrates high adhesive force (∼300 μN) but low friction force on the gas bubbles.
