The subject of ocean turbulence is in a state of discovery and development with many intellectual challenges. This book describes the principal dynamic processes that control the distribution of turbulence, its dissipation of kinetic energy and its effects on the dispersion of properties such as heat, salinity, and dissolved or suspended matter in the deep ocean, the shallow coastal and the continental shelf seas. It focuses on the measurement of turbulence, and the consequences of turbulent motion in the oceanic boundary layers at the sea surface and near the seabed. Processes are illustrated by examples of laboratory experiments and field observations. The Turbulent Ocean provides an excellent resource for senior undergraduate and graduate courses, as well as an introduction and general overview for researchers. It will be of interest to all those involved in the study of fluid motion, in particular geophysical fluid mechanics, meteorology and the dynamics of lakes.

The Turbulent Ocean

This article reviews the characteristics and behavior of counter-rotating and corotating vortex pairs, which are seemingly simple flow configurations yet immensely rich in phenomena. Since the reviews in this journal by Widnall (1975) and Spalart (1998), who studied the fundamental structure and dynamics of vortices and airplane trailing vortices, respectively, there have been many analytical, computational, and experimental studies of vortex pair flows. We discuss two-dimensional dynamics, including the merging of same-sign vortices and the interaction with the mutually induced strain, as well as three-dimensional displacement and core instabilities resulting from this interaction. Flows subject to combined instabilities are also considered, in particular the impingement of opposite-sign vortices on a ground plane. Physics of vortex merging

In Sect. 1.1 of this chapter we explain the subject of Geophysical Fluid Dynamics, and give the description of main vortex structures that have become objects of the present book: (a) Heton – a two-layer vortex with opposite rotations in different layers, and (b) Intrathermocline lens, which is studied in this work as a vortex patch in the intermediate layer of a three-layer ocean model. In this section, we propose also a short review of works in the related topics. Section 1.2 is a mathematical introduction. It contains all main formulae which are used further in Chaps. 2 and 3.

The Introductory Chapter

Using numerical simulations of rapidly rotating Boussinesq convection in a Cartesian box, we study the formation of long-lived, large-scale, depth-invariant coherent structures. These structures, which consist of concentrated cyclones, grow to the horizontal scale of the box, with velocities significantly larger than the convective motions. We vary the rotation rate, the thermal driving and the aspect ratio in order to determine the domain of existence of these large-scale vortices (LSV). We find that two conditions are required for their formation. First, the Rayleigh number, a measure of the thermal driving, must be several times its value at the linear onset of convection; this corresponds to Reynolds numbers, based on the convective velocity and the box depth, . Second, the rotational constraint on the convective structures must be strong. This requires that the local Rossby number, based on the convective velocity and the horizontal convective scale, . Simulations in which certain wavenumbers are artificially suppressed in spectral space suggest that the LSV are produced by the interactions of small-scale, depth-dependent convective motions. The presence of LSV significantly reduces the efficiency of the convective heat transport.

Large-scale vortices in rapidly rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection

In this paper, we study the interaction of two co-rotating trailing vortices. It is well-known that vortices of like-sign ultimately merge to form a single vortex, and there has been much work on measuring and predicting the initial conditions for the onset of merger, especially concerning the critical vortex core radius. However, the physical mechanism causing this merger has received little attention. In this work, we directly measure the structure of the antisymmetric vorticity field that causes the co-rotating vortices to be pushed towards each other during merger. We discover that the form of the antisymmetric vorticity comprises two counter-rotating vortex pairs, whose induced velocity field readily pushes the two centroids together. The merging velocity computed from the antisymmetric vorticity field agrees closely with the merging velocity measured directly from the total (original) flow field.The co-rotating vortex pair evolves through four distinct phases. The initial stage comprises a diffusive growth, which can be either viscous or turbulent. In either case, the number of turns that they rotate around one another until the vortices start to merge increases with Reynolds number (Re). If one observes the streamlines in a rotating reference frame (moving with the vortices), then one finds an inner and outer recirculating region of the flow bounded by a separatrix streamline. When the vortices grow large enough in the first stage, diffusion across the separatrix places vorticity into the outer recirculating region of the flow, and this leads to the generation of the antisymmetric vorticity, causing convective merger. This second (convective) stage corresponds to the motion of the vortex centroids towards each other, and is a process which is almost independent of viscosity. During the late part of this stage, the antisymmetric vorticity is diminished by a symmetrization process, and the final merging into one vorticity structure is achieved by a second diffusive stage. The fourth and ultimate phase is one where the merged vortex core grows by diffusion.

The physical mechanism for vortex merging

Stimulated by experimental observations of vortex merging, we compute a new family of uniform-vorticity steady solutions of the Euler equations in two dimensions. In experiments with two co-rotating vortices, one finds that, prior to the convective merging phase, and the formation of vortex filaments, the initial pair diffuses into a single structure (with two vorticity peaks) in the form of a symmetric ‘dumb-bell’. In the present computations, our exploration of the existence of vortex solutions has been guided by the streamline patterns of the co-rotating reference frame, and by the simple concept that the vortex boundary must be one of these streamlines. By varying the parameters which define the vortex patches, we find a family of vorticity structures which pass from the limiting case of point vortices, through the case of two equal co-rotating uniform vortices (as previously computed by Saffman & Szeto 1980; Overman & Zabusky 1982; Dritschel 1985), to the regime where the vortices touch in the form of a dumb-bell. Further exploration of this family of solutions leads to an elliptic vortex, which joins precisely to the local transcritical bifurcation from elliptic vortices with ) found by Wu, Overman & Zabusky (1984).
